The filter closest to the engine must flow towards the engine, and the one facing the cabin towards the cabin. The middle air chamber is unfiltered.

Thank you for your video. I took the precaution of watching several videos to ensure accuracy. My vehicle model is a BMW F10 2016 520D (Diesel). I proceeded by disconnecting the battery and allowing approximately 10 minutes for the system to reset. Although one instructional video recommended an hour, I opted for the shorter duration. The disassembly process involved removing two screws and an additional one securing the side panel carpet, all of which were easily extracted.
During the disassembly, I observed the absence of an airbag at knee level on the passenger side, though one was present on the dashboard. As an added precaution, I disabled the passenger side airbag. Furthermore, I disconnected the electrical wiring leading to the cigarette lighter and floor light to facilitate the removal of the entire bottom panel.
Upon accessing the air filter compartment, I encountered three screws, which were also easily removed. However, upon extracting the two filters, I noted that the airflow direction appeared to be oriented away from the passenger side. Consulting the instruction manual accompanying my filter kit revealed that the proper airflow direction should be towards the passenger side. Consequently, I proceeded to install the filters accordingly.
After reassembling all components, I reconnected the negative terminal of the battery, powered on the vehicle, and verified all settings. The only adjustment required was resetting the time of day.

Great step by step process - thanks! Took me 30 minutes with no issues. Note that the wiring for the air bag might be clipped to the hardware. Just a quick unsnapping and it gave me the the space needed to safely avoid chaotic air bag deployment.

@@WirGanSekali That is wrong sir. BMW TIS Procedure article number 64 31 010 states that "Arrow must always point opposite of the direction of travel for installation." This is a 3-chamber design with the middle chamber being the unfiltered chamber, so the Video Creator is correct on this installation. Next time you change the filters, check which side has the most debris. You will see that the sides that are on the outer side of the housing (one facing the engine and the other facing the cabin) are the f ok filtered sides.

@@raybutts9133Be very afraid, as literally anything is possible. An unmounted airbag is a hand grenade, it can kill you according to my Porsche shop manual. Legally, airbags that are removed from the car are to be stored in a locked cabinet (just like a gun), and carried there in a "static free" fashion. Getting half of your face or hand blown right off would probably smell bad. Then you'd have to install another filter. That would suck.

There is no reason why you should disconnect the battery-none at all. One could argue that it is necessary to avoid accidental airbag deployment, but that becomes a moot point since you need to wait at least 30 minutes to flush residual electrical charge after disconnecting the battery and no one ever waits...
