  • Harley Street Bob 1k Service - Costs How Much!? A lot of people have different opinions on the Harley 1000 mile service. I got this bike with exactly 1,000 miles used so I just had it done. I will discuss why, how much it costs, what they did, and was it worth it!

I stopped going to HD for routine maintenance. After several years of going there I came to realize the cost of service far outweighs the benefit. I do all my routine maintenance now. Take care.

I did my service at the dealership and one year after the warranty Harley Davidson fixed my bike no charge to me. That's correct one year out of warranty they stepped up and fixed a major issue no question asked, but I didn't alter the bike and I had the service work done correctly 👍 so you get what you pay for... thanks Harley Davidson you have a life long customer here... and thank you Copper Canyon Harley Davidson for being a great Dealership 👍

I learned soon after buying my first HD that everything about the dealer is a big rip-off .
I owned 1 new Harley and ended up doing the 1,000 mile, and the rest of the services myself. The second time I bought a Harley at a dealer it was used and they tried playing A LOT of games and added charges. I ended up walking out but the sales manager came running out and finally agreed to a straight deal Since then I only go into a Harley dealer as an absolute LAST resort for parts I can't find anywhere else and I buy my bikes from private party sellers.

I've had 3 different Harleys at the point and have done all 3 myself. The checklist they use can be printed online and with all 3 bikes I've never had anything loose on that list. I think it's a joke myself.

I just watched Matt Laidlaw's video about his shop's 1K mile check up. I had no idea what was involved in this service. They checked the tightness of every nut, bolt and screw on that machine along with the tension on the spokes on the wheels. Oils were changed and clutch adjustments made. Seemed like a pretty good service to me. That bike is certified road-worthy when they get done with their service. Washed and sparkling clean when delivered back to the customer. Years ago I went into a bike shop and they had a used Harley sportster on their showroom floor. They wanted to charge a "Used bike service fee". That bike still had caked up dirt on the chain, wheels and frame work. When I asked what kind of service they performed this bike that left it in this condition and the salesperson just said; "It's our fee. Take it or leave it". Obviously I left it as fast as I could get to the front door.

Service writer at a SoCal HD dealer here, totally understand peoples feelings about prices, it baffles me sometimes. HD has still been affected by all the supply chain issues so weve seen prices on oil, filters, tires and others go up.
One thing i will say is that working at a dealer has truly taught me the importance of having a technician work on your bike.
Not every dealer is the same, but once you find a good dealer that cares about your bike, hold onto them.

I'm pretty happy with my dealership. I don't mind doing some service/work. Done oil changes, full exhaust, foot controls, bars and wiring etc etc...
That said I run a lot of miles on my bikes. So when I bought my 21FXLRS in Aug of 21 I bought a service plan with it. I think it was like 3k up front for 3y of service or something like that... unlimited miles, everything is covered.
Well 33k miles later the plan has more than paid for itself, a couple small warranty issues have been addressed, and I still have like 1-2y left on it.... tires for life has saved me a fortune as well lol.
Bike is on and off the road right now due to NH winter, but most of the year it gets daily use. It's good to know that my bike is being taken care of and I generally can just drop it off before work and pick it up when I get off. 🤷‍♂️

When I started at the dealership in 1998 labor was fourtyfive bucks an hour. Now it's 126.00 an hour.
We are middle of the road. Within a 250 mile radius there are several that are higher. I will definitely have the first service done there.
    And probably the 10k service.
5qts of syn engine oil at 12.95 a qt. Two qts of formula plus @ 8.95, or two qts of syn gear oil @ 20.00 a qt. Oil filter bout fifteen bucks. Spark plugs, (4) if you need em, @bout 4 bucks ea. Tank has to come off to change em .O rings and derby seal bout eight bucks. First service is at 2K. Fluid change and thorough check over. 10K is the whole magilla. Check bearings brake fluid/ pads, drive belt, full fluid change, forks...
Some shops are straight up hourly, some are book rate. The shop I worked at are trustworthy and keep good, trained mechanics.

The dealer who I bought the bike from didn’t care. The other dealer’s service writer got back to me in a day or two.
Also, when The time came for the 1K service, the dealership I purchased the bike from wanted an extra $200. They said it was due to having to go around and tighten the spokes. Forget you!

There is one huge benefit to having a dealership perform your service work: it's entered into a company database, or so I was told. If you're on the way to Sturgis and the engine says sayonara in Iowa the dealership they tow you to will smile and tell you that since they have the records and your bike was serviced a new engine is on its way.

HD has turned on the customer base who kept them in business for decades. They overcharge for everything. They are sadly living off of their name now instead of the bikes and apparel. All the apparel is cheap Chinese junk. I have owned several Harleys. I bought 3 brand new ones in the past. I’m to the point now to where I’m looking into other brands.

I am of the same opinion as you. And its not just the apparel, a lot of parts on our Harley's are made in China as well. Chinese made, but Harley priced $$. 😐

Beyond nuts. How do you justify that? Compared to a car, that is nuts. I will probably get HD to do the 5K. Not looking forward to it, but will do it for the same reasons. Just not right.

Harley is just infamously overpriced regardless of who you talk too. Why is it that Yamaha charges $350 for a “first service” on a Turbo Niken but Harley charged you $600 for a 85 HP brick. It’s the reason their stock is worthless (when they’re not hoarding them) and this new generation of bikers will bypass them completely IMO.

    • @samheninger505
      @samheninger505 Před rokem

To do it yerself it's more like $95 or more if you use a new gasket on primary, 1qt gear oil for transmission $15. 1qt gear oil for primary $15 3 to 4 qt 20w50 motorcycle specific motor oil $48 ,oil filter $15 , primary gasket $15 doesn't have to be changed every time the oil level sits below the gasket if it leaks you don't have to drain the oil out to put a new gasket on. Ya I can change the oil in my truck for 30$ but not my harley 8-(

That job doesn't take 1 hour to do well. Insane the maintenance program Harley recommends and people pay it. I'm done with Harley and my DCT Wing manual calls for first oil/filter change at 4k, and every 8k after that and change the filters every other oil change. Everything in a HD dealership is a rip-off.
