Resistance in the west bank and al-quds isn’t Hamas and I’m sure even in Gaza not every resistance group is automatically Hamas. Whatever Hamas’s motives are, they are opposed to Israeli occupation. Armed resistance is the only way by which Palestinians can free themselves from armed occupation. Palestinians don’t have the luxury to abide by Western standards as they’re left to fend for themselves while Israel is backed by every western power.

But yes, there are indeed other resistance groups other than Hamas who support Hamas and the destruction of Israel. 40 days and if you still don't join the IDF, back you go for another 40, and another and another until you either join or die of old age in prison.

She will also face being a social outcast as the vast, vast majority of Israeli society does not share her beliefs on this topic.

Many Israeli youth chose not to serve in the idf for many of the same reasons but non of them get sent to prison...in fact, I know quite a few, unfortunately. The ones who go to prison do so to get out of any kind of national service and that's not something to be cheered. That behaviour is deplorable.
I'm writing this in complete tears, I've been in despair over what is happening in Palestine, this young woman totally and utterly restored my faith in humanity. What an exceptional himan being. Compassionate and principled. I really hope she remains safe. Her parents did a fantastic job.

Indeed. I listened to this live and was blown away by Sophia's magnificent articulacy. It makes me think that there must surely be many Israeli people who feel this way, but the local sanctions against them if they dared to speak out are just too brutal. This makes me think of Jerusalem teacher Meir Baruchin who was brutally sanctioned last year for criticising the military. Brave, brave souls.

As someone who made the same stance 43 years ago (different country and different war) I admire this young person. No matter what the consequences of refusal to serve the military, your conscience is clear, you've done the right thing! I've never regretted this same decision I've made when I was 18 and the trouble I went through was worth it. Thank you Sofia for what you are and what you do for peace and justices!
Hope James takes note when she said israeli society is right wing and militaristic, as he's someone who's desperately believed in the democracy and goodness of Israel (until very recently of course). This young lady is grown up beyond her years. It's awful that Israeli children are forced to grow up early to become tools of the occupation.
