I use almost the exact proportions you use. I use 2 parts tequila to 1 part each of Cointreau/triplesec and fresh lime juice. Great idea to use a lime to salt the rim. The only thing I would add is that I freeze my glass ahead of time. That accomplishes 2 things. First, it keeps everything colder and helps reduce ice melting. Second, I love a really cold, but not frozen, margarita. A frozen glass gets me exactly what I like. I’d never drink a margarita from a bottle for exactly the reasons you mention.

I'm the margarita master and I regularly drink them at the 2 bars where they were probably invented (Ensenada). Cheap blanco tequila makes the best margarita ( I agree to avoid weird-flavored off brands). I generally agree with everything else, except that some mixes taste much better than an authentic margarita.

100% pure agave tequila can still be flavored with additives. Tequila matchmakers has a list of additive free brands. I think Tres Agave and Arette make very good inexpensive blancos perfect for mixing. I've never had a triple sec that didn't taste like chemicals but there could be some. Cointreau is the standard and very good but using agave nectar instead is very tasty too. Check your limes before you start too. My last batch was nasty harsh and bitter. Had to trash them.

  • @jean-francoispoitras6857

I use 1oz of fresh lime juice instead of 3/4oz stated in the video and it turns out to be the best balance for me. Most restaurants and bars will add simple syrup to the non frozen version and it’s awful. Kudos to this video for making me a fan of margaritas!!

I’m a bartender in nyc… I’ve worked at 3 different cocktail bars. Try this… This recipe is tried and true…
      2oz tequila
      1oz lime
      .75 simple syrup
      Skip the orange liqueur.
This recipe is easier, cheaper and tastes better. If you want less sweet you can do .75 lime/.5 simple. But typically people who order a margarita are looking for a sweet drink not a strong drink.

Some orange liqueurs work better with specific Tequilas. "How to Drink" CZcams did a matrix of multiple tequilas and multiple orange Ls and it was illuminating how different they blend. I like Arette blanco and I think it works best with Grand Marnier. I love Clémont Créole Shrubb but not with Arette. The blend comes off a bit sharp but it might work better with a less tangy reposado.

Looks good! We like a little agave nectar in our rocks margaritas. Kinda like your simple syrup in your frozen drink. Also like Gran Marnier or triple sec or cointreau. Each has a little different flavor. But, as I am a drinking bartender here at home and making margaritas from scratch can get kinda time consuming! Here in Texas we have found that Republic makes some nice margarita mixes. Classic, jalapeno, prickly pear, etc. Some I don't care for, most are good. :)

It's pedantic and that classic Margarita is a winner but I always prefer it served 'up' as it originally was, for a real treat Grand Marnier instead of Cointreau is a winner, you may need a little simple/agave though as not a sweet, I love my Margarita's super tart however so forgo any sweetner over and above the sweetness the orange drink brings

    As a bartender in nyc…
here’s the recipe. Skip the triple sec. (Technically this is a “Tommy’s margarita” but I’ve worked at 3 bars and we all do this, no customer has ever asked about the orange liqueur. This recipe is better and easier…
    2oz tequila
    1oz lime
    .75 simple syrup.
Here’s a tip… don’t shake. Roll. In other words don’t put ice in the cup and the tin and shake and double strain back into the cup. Just put the ice in the tin, do a light rolling motion (not a shake) and dump all in the glass. By “rolling” and not shaking the drink still gets chilled and diluted, but not aerated and doesn’t get any little ice chunks. Plus it’s faster, requires less ice and now you don’t to have to wash strainers.
    Roll about 20 seconds.
And dump straight into the glass
So yeah, do that recipe and you impress people. Having a party? Multiple those specs by 3 and you do that twice and in no time you have 6 great tasting margs.
Another tip… only salt half the rim. That way if people want salt they got it and if not half doesn’t have it.
Another tip. Just never use triple sec orange liqueur. Instead use either cuantro or dry curaçao as you orange liqueur. (And don’t use orange liqueur in a margarita.)

yo it's my first margarita...sooo strong... not sure I can drink these. Anyone else experiencing this? I thought it looked extremely strong but also I don't really like the flavour. Using Contreu and Jose Cuervo... so... thought it would be decent. But bloody hell, double tequila and a single Contreau will wreck me. Overpowering

    Why not Grand Marnier ?

Cointreau, Grand Marnier, Curaciao, or Triple Sec can be interchangeable, as they’re all orange liquers. Cointreau is the choice of basically any serious bar or restaurant, as it’s a lot smoother. Triple Sec is pretty abrasive, curaciao is overly sweet, and grand marnier just doesn’t cut through as well (in my experience).

The mistake is you are using terrible tequila. look into "Additive free" tequilas.

To break your “only lime” theory, good bars are making super fruit juices, like oleo sacrum, which has yielded better reviews.
A touch of OJ (less than half an ounce) gives it a bit more sweetness, and a lot more prominent colour, unlike just lime juice.
Also, ditch the simple and use agave syrup.

You didn’t mention salt! The very best sea salt flakes. None of that dreadful table salt rubbish. Or was that a given?

That’s what I was going to say. Kosher salt is what you’re looking for. Table salt tastes TERRIBLE in a margarita
