    The station used this clip to illustrate the change in how thunderstorm and tornado warnings are broadcast in modern times on the 11 pm news on April 18, 2024.

    Great 1988 commercial!

  • @CommissionerLawWonder86

    Whoa. An EBS alert related to a Thunderstorm. Those are basically rare. The common Thunder Storm warnings these days come from the more sophisticated Emergency Alert System. Normally we only heard the EBS tones monthly from God knows when all the way to 1996 when they tested the damn systems. And those were reserved for when a possible Nuclear Attack which never happened even after it was replaced by EAS in 1997. Then and only then were they used for warning people on a weather related emergency. Hardcore, viewers.

    Does anyone recall what the warning slides looked like in 1985? I’m trying to envision what I would have seen had I been watching TV the evening of May 31, 1985, so any recollections of the Tornado Warning slides from the Youngstown, Pittsburgh, Erie, or Cleveland stations would be relevant.

    Can you post the WKBN-TV 27 and/or the WYTV-TV 33 version of the Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Columbiana County from 1988, like you did WFMJ? WKBN's version was Weather Advisory card, then the Live TV27 Color Weather Radar, then the Weather Advisory Card. WYTV's version was EBS Card, with WYTV announcer Al Medvey at the beginning of WYTV's EBS interruption slide, "We interrupt this program so that we bring this announcment from the Youngstown, Ohio operational area, then the (Tornado/Severe Thunderstorm/Flash Flood) Warning on the Circle 33 logo Card, then back to the EBS Card, with WYTV announcer Al Medvey at the end of WYTV's EBS interruption slide, "This concludes this announcement from the Youngstown, Ohio operational area broadcast system. Stay tuned to this station for further information."

      WYTV's EBS Alert late 80s card had a red background, with the letter font similar to the Subaru logo back then, with the first letter of each word beginning with a capital letter, the rest of the letters of the word lower case (Tornado/Severe Thunderstorm/Flash Flood) Warning on the Circle 33 logo, EAS CEC, and at the lower portion of screen, "WYTV Youngstown"

      You can't find the WYTV late 80's EBS Alert on either CZcams or Google, the person you should contact is Phil Ciccone, EAS CEC!!! I'm sure he'll tell you that somebody may have it on tape

      Marie Pavlov, Can you tell me what the color of the background, Where the EBS Logo, CD logo and Circle 33 Logo is on the one you told me 5 months ago? And Btw, I found KRIV's Test.

  • @galencrowson2208
    @galencrowson2208 Před 5 lety

    Yes, the original EBS, designed to keep people informed for any emergency situation (such as bad weather, i.e. a hurricane , blizzard or tornado, etc) yet the attention signal can be for most people annoying @ the same time.
    I think it's successor the E.A.S (Emergency Alert System) has that same or similar purpose of function.

  • @newstarcadefan
    @newstarcadefan Před 9 lety +3

    Okay I kinda remember this. But I mostly remember the W on the top left of the screen...that was a bit unnerving as a kid. (The same with WKBN's old Triangles of Doom).

    • @ChristopherSobieniak
      @ChristopherSobieniak Před 9 lety +2

      newstarcadefan WTOL in Toledo use to use an odd "Double W" logo for their watch/warning bugs.

    • @mariepavlov9144
      @mariepavlov9144 Před 7 lety +1

      same here....WFMJ (late 80s), the W with flood/lightning/tornado/snow on the top left of the screen. WKBN (late 80s/early 90s), the Triangles of Doom, green (Flood), yellow (Thunderstorm), red (tornado/winter storm) with the W, also on top left of the screen. WYTV (late 80s/early 90s) just the plain W on the top left of the screen.
      As the matter of fact, on May 31, 1985, the day of Tornado '85, when tornadoes leveled Trumbull and Mercer counties, WYTV was the one and only Youngstown, Ohio TV station that had the plain W on the TV screen for severe weather watches and warnings. My how things have changed since then.

    Another northeastern Ohio EBS Test is Found from 1993 it has to be a Cleveland station and what northeastern Ohio station used that EBS test slide that was uploaded by Mainely Maine Not Commercials. Both Detroit EBS Test uploads WXYZ and WKBD had civil defense logos in their EBS test slides.

  • @nicka727
    @nicka727 Před 9 lety +3

    Was it the real WFMJ slide? On the second one the slide that showed severe weather, in 1989 when WXYZ in Detroit switch to the slide that says like Tornado Warning, Thunderstorm Warning, or Severe Weather with the EBS tone playing in the background.

    • @sergio9603
      @sergio9603 Před 9 lety +1

      Yes, I grew up in Youngstown and remember this slide well. WFMJ used this from roughly 1986-1990...the one they used after this one was especially creepy; they also used updated warning slides with the new EBS slide so they looked more like each other

    • @mst3k4evr
      @mst3k4evr Před 9 lety +3

      Chris D If you're talking about the one where it had Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado in cursive with WARNING in huge letters below it, hell yeah it was creepy! I have it on tape somewhere from the summer of 1992.

      The one after this as I recall was a black translucent background with the three EBS "eggs" but they were taller than the ones in this video, and "EBS" in the same font, no "Emergency Broadcast System" banner underneath. Very cryptic and very creepy

  • @mariepavlov9144
    @mariepavlov9144 Před 6 lety +1

    • @nicka727
      @nicka727 Před 6 lety +2

      Marie Pavlov I’ve seen WTOL’s Toledo 11 (CBS) from March 1988 it was a dark colored background with the words Emergency Broadcast System In The center of the screen and scrolling text at the bottom separated by the blue and green lines. WJKW/WJW channel 8 Cleveland when it was a CBS affiliate see WSNS excerpt and also looked like WXON TV 20 In Detroit.

    • @mariepavlov9144
      @mariepavlov9144 Před 6 lety

      Nick albers, the EBS test from Youngstown, Ohio that I remember the most is WYTV 33. First with a "E.B.S. Test" graphic on the Blue square on the upper left side and WYTV Youngstown, Ohio graphic on the upper right side and "This is a test. This is station is conducting a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. This is only a test." graphic at lower portion of the screen. Next, the oval "EBS" graphic with dark background with white ovals (red letter, e; blue letter, b; green letter, s) with a "This is only a test graphic under the oval "EBS" logo for a good 10 seconds as the Attention Signal was carried by the EBS encoder. Lastly, with a "E.B.S. Test" graphic on the Blue square on the upper right side and WYTV Youngstown, Ohio graphic on the upper right side and "This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System. The broadcasters of your area in voluntary cooperation with the FCC and other authorities have developed this system to keep you informed in the event of an emergency. If this had been an actual energency, you would have been instructed where to tune in your area for news and official information. This concludes this test of the Emergency Broadcast System." graphic at lower portion of the screen.
