327 is one of my absolute favorite calibers. 6 shots in a snubbie and with handloads I can get up to 1300 fps with a 90 grain bullet with that 1.8 inch barrel with not a lot of recoil. I just wish it was way more widespread and cheaper.

I bet you can get more. Try the 85gr xtp with 14gr of aa#9. Im pushing them 1400-1506 out of my ruger lcr 😮. Also, try some handloads with CFE pistol, I'm finding I can get even more out of that 45k psi

I’ve been carrying a Ruger SP101 3” 327 as my EDC for about 2 years now and couldn’t be happier. The Gold Dots give me about 1425fps and my buddy and I have our New England meat target (our take on Paul Harrells meat target we just use a carharrtt barb coat as the outer layer but in our testing the 327 consistently opens to about .52-.54 and decimates the target very close to 357. It blows 9mm out of the water in our testing. Now my buddy carry’s an LCR he loads Federal Hydra Shok for better recoil management but the 327 is a gem of a cartridge.

I compared the 115 grain Gold Dot 327 to some 125 grain Remington HP ammo in a pair of SP101s with 3 1/16" barrels, and recoil was pretty equal. I also compared some 38 Special +P 135 grain Gold Dot ammo with some of my "Ruger-level" 32 H&R Magnum handloads with the 115 grain Gold Dot bullet in the same guns. That 38 Special load is fantastic, but the H&R load edged it out in wound channel size, while penetration was nearly identical. Recoil was again close, and far more pleasant than with the top end loads. I used to wish Speer would offer a full-house 32 H&R load with the 115 grain Gold Dot for owners of the 327 who find the Federal round a little "punchy", but then I realize that's exactly what the 30 Super Carry is.

I've reloaded this caliber, and carry it for almost 15 years now, I wouldn't carry anything else, it's by far one of the best shooting revolvers, out there. Both power and accuracy. I load a fast 50 55 and 60 grain, bullet. Shooting over 1700 fps which gives less recoil. And that comes from the exact ruger lcr, that your shooting.

Big fan of the .327. Have 2 currently. When I bought my LCR late in 2018 I paid a few ticks over $458 NIB. I guess prices went through the roof. I went to a local gun shop to get some FMJ federal practice ammo and he wanted about $60 for a box of 50. I basically told him to GF. Price on ammo not great agreed. Beauty is the guns fire 4 other differing calibers which aren’t as costly.

Ruger used to offer a 7-round GP100 chambered in 327 Federal Magnum. Their standard GP100 capacity at the time was 6, so that aligns with the +1 capacity of the 327 vs. 357. Now, Ruger is offering their GP100 in 357 with a 7-round capacity. With +1 for the 327, that would bring the capacity in 327 to 8 rounds. The 327 is a notably high-intensity cartridge, and that may preclude putting 10 rounds in a GP100. 9 might be doable, depending on how the geometry works out.

  • @HighStrangeDrifter

I appreciate your honesty in accessing the gun and the round. The Ruger LCR at $$$ together with the meme round of .327mag is ridiculous. Why would anyone buy an overpriced, underweight, slow loading revolver with expensive, hard to find ammo for mediocre to acceptable ballistics? I could buy a Glock 43, a pistol many despise, that’s way cheaper, 6+1, quicker reloading and takes a spectrum of ammo that’s easily found and affordable. I would also add that these guns are arguably the same size. Makes no sense.

Hard to go wrong with Gold Dots.
I have a hankering for the 4.2" SP101. That would be a much more pleasant package. The extra barrel length makes 32 Long HBWCs a very viable performer (tests I have seen easily meet FBI specs) and makes the H&R and 327 into real barn burners. Add to that that the longer barrel makes for a good small game gun with shorts or longs.

  • @327SixShooter
    @327SixShooter Před rokem +2

I love my lcr .327. There actually is 1 load that i'm aware of in .32 S&W long that is adequete for self defense. That is the 100 grain hardcast wadcutter by buffalo bore. It really pushes that caliber to it's limit. On the box it advertises 900 fps. It won't get that out of the 2 inch lcr, but actually still gets on average 820 fps out of it. And it penetrates 16 inches into ballistics gel. Obviously the hardcast wadcutter won't expand, but the shape of the projectile makes a much more effective wound than a round nose fmj would. The recoil is next to nothing with that load as well so that is my wife's carry round. She is very small and can't handle a lot of recoil. When I carry the lcr, I have it loaded with the federal 85 grain hydrashock which is advertised as a low recoil option. It obviously doesn't get anywhere near the performance of the gold dot, but it's very shootable and is loaded more to the level of a hot .32 h&r mag. It's a great comprimise for the lcr. It gets 12 to 13 inches of penetration and expands very nicely. You need an sp101 or larger gun to take full advantage of the .327 federal magnum caliber in a practical way. And while you are correct that it does have a lot of recoil, it is still quite a bit less than a .357 magnum. The .327 full power loads are uncomfortable, but.357 magnum full power loads in an lcr literally make my hand bleed. So it is still worse..
So while the recoil advantage in .357 magnum is pretty small and they both suck for full powered loads, the .327 is still a better fit for a snub nose sub compact carry gun imo. Because of the 1 extra round and the diversity of power level options you have in the .327 and the extra round of capacity. Also, you are right that .327 ammo is very expensive. I started handloading just because I love the caliber so much. You can handload it for about the same price as 9mm.

I asked a friend who's a former trauma surgeon about "stopping power" and he said in terms of effect on humans, the caliber doesn't matter nearly as much as the velocity. That's probably where the 327 leaps ahead. I do wish Ruger would do 1 thing and that's make the 327 LCR with a 3" barrel. That extra 1 inch change from 2 to 3 inches bumps velocity by 33%. After that, the velocity increases are much less but that bump from 2 to 3 inches is pretty critical.

I've been interested in both the 327 and 357 Sig for a while now. They both have impressive ballistics but I agree about the recoil of the 327. While I've never had the chance to shoot either caliber, I get the idea that the 327 would be unpleasant to shoot in a small, light revolver. One of my uncles has a Rossi 357 mag with a 4" barrel that only weighs somewhere in the mid 20 ozs and is actually painful to shoot with full powered 357 125 gr rounds. I'm not recoil sensitive at all, but 6 rounds is about all I can stand. It actually has more recoil than a single action 44 mag that I used to have. 40 rounds of 240 gr full house loads were no problem in one session. A carry gun isn't much good if the recoil prevents practicing on a regular basis. That's why I love my 1911 45 so much. It has an aluminum frame so it only weighs 28.5 oz unloaded, but the recoil of the 45 in a 1911 platform is very pleasant to shoot. I've run over 300 rounds as fast as I could reload the mags and only had a slightly sore wrist for a couple hours. Power is good but hitting what you're aiming at consistently is the most important skill to have in a carry pistol.

I owned the Glock 31. I sold it purely on ammo availability and price. The gun was sweet and fun to shoot. It’s like a spicy .40S&W. No felt backward recoil, but rather significant muzzle climb….or muzzle flip…it kind of just pops the front of the barrel up. If you shot a lot of .40 out of compact frames, it is similar to that but with a little more crack.
I loved the projectiles trajectory and balistically it is nice. Just sucks that it is niche, just like this .327. Niche=expensive and expensive=less range time. I’d stick to your 1911 or if you want higher capacity a Glock 21 or 19/17 if you’re willing to go to 9mm.

We have four firearms that shoot 32 H & R mag, 327 and 32 long. The LCR is a handful with the 327 but the GP 100 does great with them. We have two Ruger Single Six single actions that only go up to 32 H &R and my wife uses those for cowboy shooting. Since most all my ammo is hand loaded, I can do a lot of experiments with different powder loads and bullets. The H & R can go up to enough pressure to be a very significant self defense choice.

Are you using that little stock grip? I couldn't stand that with my 357 LCR. The hogue longer grip def helped with recoil and I would assume the same is true here. Federal makes an 85gr 327 thats low recoil and it does between those full power loads and the H&R mag. Much more shootable, but better performance than the H&R. Then, add the cost of a box of .327 F Magnum ammo. Wow!

  • @rbm6184
    @rbm6184 Před rokem +1

That is why I prefer to just use a +P rated .38Spl. that approaches .357 Magnum velocities anyway from a short two or three inch barrel. The short barrel reduces the velocity of the .357 Magnum down to near .38Spl. +P velocities with more recoil than a .38Spl. +P from the same short length barrel. Makes more sense to use .38Spl. +P with less recoil. As has been said before the .327 Federal Magnum is a great round with the versatility of being able to shoot other .32 calibers but its availability and cost puts it out of reach for most folks.

He did surprisingly well with the 327 both in recoil management and not flinching due to the blast. Ov those he actually found the Webley the most difficult to shoot although that was mainly due to the ergonomics ov my bird's head WG. I find 327 slightly more manageable than 40s&w in a full size for reference to more common calibers.

85gr loads like Federal's Hydra-Shok are the sweet spot for me with .327 Federal in my Taurus 327. Anything heavier, like 100gr loads, would probably be too stout for me in a snub; even a steel-framed one like mine.

That soft point acts like a hollow point. As earlier stated the longer barrels even of my SP101 and especially my 5.5" Single seven and 20" Henry.
I disagree on the severity of the recoil, I find it to be more about the muzzle blast and pressure wave without much push back or muzzle flip.

Too expensive?? How much is your life worth?
The 32 H&R magnum is probably a better choice for EDC, less recoil and very good performance. As far as price and availability is concerned both the 327 and the 32 H&R are somewhat difficult to find, but that’s why I load my own practice ammo. As far as the 32 Long is concerned it may perform better with a SWC or full Wadcutter type projectile but isn’t the best choice for EDC. JMHO…..🚁💨💨

Stopping power is just fine and truthful. After all, stopping a aggressive threat is what the purpose of a handgun is. For a small frame revolver a .327 is probably the best defensive round so far. Had Federal not screwed the pooch when it was introduced it would be the standard small revolver round today. Far better than .38 and even with increased recoil, nowhere near the .357.

  • @eronavbj

After researching the 327 for about six months, I started to physically shop around for one. The negatives started to pile up:
    1. The firearms are difficult if not impossible to find.
    2. The guns prices have spiraled out of normal price range.
    3. The ammo spiraled out of acceptable price range.
    4. The ammo is almost impossible to find.
All things considered, I opted for a 9mm, which brought out NONE of the above-mentioned negatives. Since I never was able to find a 327 or the ammo, I'm not able to comment on the recoil.

I have never fired a .327 but as it's pretty potent it doesn't surprise me that it has a fairly violent recoil out of such a short barrel but .357 and .44 are much more substantial recoil wise out of those little guns.

I really like the Ruger LCR. I have one in 38 and one in 327 and I like them both. Comparing underwood xtreme defenders in 327 to xtreme defenders in 38 special I dont notice a lot of difference in recoil. The 327 definitely has a louder report.
This will be controversial to some but the sub nosed revolver is not really the best choice for defense for most people. They kick, they require a bit of practice to shoot well and capacity is limited. I still love my revolvers but there are good arguments that I should pick something else for personal defense

shootability? what at the range? what about a life threatening situation? I would offer that if you would have to draw to defend oneself that the confidence in the 327 mag would make up for "recoil".
Also, the LCR comes in 22LR and would be an excellent trainer . A couple thousand rounds in 22 will save $$ yet will provide excellent familiarity with the platform so when you do carry the LCR in 327...... you'll be adept.

I find the 327 loads with lighter projectiles to be fantastic carry rounds in the LCR as far as shootability, and I’m not a big guy. That might be worth trying: The 85-grain Federal Hydra-shok, the 80-grain Hornady FTX load, and the 75-grain Double-Tap are all a lot more manageable for me. Feel more like a .38 Special +P from the same platform. Maybe even a little lighter recoil than that.
