Stopping Power of .32 H&R Magnum -- and a Squib Load!

  • This week we take a closer look at the stopping power of the .32 H&R Magnum. During our testing, we happened to experience a squib load. This is a good example of why you should be cognizant of what's going on when you're shooting, as it has the potential for catastrophic failure including injury.

Dad's got a Charter Arms Professional 32 H&R mag that is without a doubt one of the best pointing and best feeling revolvers that I've ever shot. It's got a 3" barrel so it's small enough to carry without even noticing you're carrying it and enough barrel length to get good velocities in the 32. That little revolver is a real pleasure to shoot but the ammo is a little expensive. The 32 long and 32 short are like shooting a 22 but again the ammo is expensive.

I am a fan of the 32s, while I choose to reload to gallery load velocities for plinking, I do reload to standard velocities for both the 32 H&R and the 327 federal.
I have two Taurus 327s and one LCRX. The others are charter arms, my wife and I stage one in each of our cars and one near each entrance of our home, all well hidden.
Being in our 70s we know we are potential targets for bad guys, what the bad guys don’t know is that we practice and brief S A when getting in and out of the car and while carrying, we are not paranoid people, just aware of our surroundings.
We both have worked out of the country where the street level threats were much higher than they are here in the US.
That experience has help tune our SA
Having the ability to, PLINK for pennies a round really helps with muscle memory and her comfort level.
For target fun with rifles we shoot a 32-20, a.32-40 bpcr and a 32 Long.
With respect to the revolvers, many do not know that a 327 Federal can shoot 32 Shorts , 32 S&W Long, 32H&R Magnum and the 327 Federal Magnum. ALL Out of the same gun.
Similarly, the 32 H&R Magnum can shoot the 32 S&W Short, 32 S&W Long and of course the 32 H&R Mag.
Thanks for the split screen recoil video showing the muzzle jump differences.
I’ve often been of the opinion that a confident (no flinch) lesser powered round is a better option than a miss with a magnum.

I have a .327 LCR. I usually carry it with federal HST 85 grain .327 low recoil. And my wife carries it with buffalo bore .32 s&w long 100 grain hardcast wadcutters. That is a great option for people who can't handle a lot of recoil and it really pushes that caliber to it's limit. It got 16 inches of penetration in gel. As much residue as was on the base of that bullet that stuck in the bore, it appears there was SOME powder in the case, but it was either a gross undercharge, or the powder was contaminated. Regardless, less than 900 FPS from a 32 H&R with a 100 grain bullet is pretty weaksauce. Even from a "snubby", my handloads are well over 1,000 FPS, and I don't use maximum charges. You'd think that major manufacturers- who have access to powders we don't- could do a little better. Then I got a Taurus Titanium, then a S&W Air Weight, just recently another Taurus Ultra Lite, and this week an S&W Air Lite Ti (titanium cylinder) the lightest of all these H&R Magnums. With an IDPA target I was doing a nice group of head shots at 15yds with the Air Weight and the Taurus Titanium. The S&W was a slightly tighter group. I think I was using Georgia Arms hollow point ammo at the time, a few years ago. I am curious how the Hornady critical defense ammo would do with the ballistic tip, that is the one with the hollow point filled in. That might be the 327 only though.

Good thing you were slow-shooting when the squib happened. If that had happened while you were rapid-firing, you might not have had time to realize “Oh oh, STOP!” before pressing again.
Seeing this made me wonder if shooting a bigger heavier steel revolver like a GP100 or SP100 is inherently safer than something tiny like the LCR in a squib situation. I mean, if there is a catastrophic failure and a round explodes, I’d probably much rather have it happen in a thick heavy barrel. Yeah, you lose the gun, but hopefully that’s all.
Also, I had a minor heart attack when you had the squib and then looked down the barrel at 8:39. Yeah, the cartridge had gone off, but there’s still powder in there and a bullet in the barrel. One of my childhood friends lost an eye while cleaning his gun.

The XTP has always seemed ro need 1100 fps or more to teliably expand. So it is at its best in magnum revolvers and 9mm +p. It was originally marketed as a controlled expansion hunting bullet, so i think Hornady is being a little lazy by loading ot in this and other things like 9x18. I think you mis-stated velocity. There is no way an H&R will ever get near 1300 fps. The original Federal 85 gr loads were rated at no more than 1050 or 1085 fps (3" barrel i think, but I don't remember). I think you were thinking of the 327 when you said that. The H&R seems useful with careful ammo selection, and of course it is a great practice round. A Single Seven in 327 with the 4-5/8" barrel seems like it would be a nice trail gun.

You can't remove a stuck projectile yourself???? Just stick a wooden dowel in there and push.

THE ONLY TIME I EVER GET ANY EXPANSION FROM THE XTP 140 GR IN 38 SPCL +P LOADS IS IF I REALLY SCORE THE EXISTING CREASES WITH A XZACTO KNIFE -- AND I REALLY CUT IT AS DEEP AS I CAN - THEN THEY'LL EXPAND A BIT IN MY RELOADS -- OTHERWISE YOU'RE WASTING YOUR TIME IMHO
