It goes to show, Victoria era products were made to last. Today there is so much plastic, made to break things. I really enjoyed this.

I am so very pleased to meet you and your husband, albeit only through modern technology. I too live a historical lifestyle, which tends towards primarily the period from the Reign of King Edward VII through the mid depression era. Basically, I fall off the modern bandwagon at the point gentlemen ceased wearing single-collar shirts with detachable stiff collars (which is all I wear) thanks to Darcy Clothiers, the only remaining tailor of accurate detachable stiff-collared shirts which are still worn by British barristers and magistrates today.
Nothing in my home was produced after 1938 save for my computer, cellphone, internet connection, and printer and a few modern books. The home itself is a middle-class Victorian cottage built in 1887 in the oldest neighborhood in my hometown of Toledo, OH. While I am required by county law to have electricity, I only use it for the modern things I have, an early 20th C electric crystal chandelier hanging in my dining room, a 1910 pendant light in the kitchen and I have a 1938 GM Frigidaire refrigerator. All other lighting is kerosene, heat is kerosene (I only use gas for my 1920 Detroit Jewel range and oven, and I have an antique 1907 Ruud on-demand hot water heater).
I hope to see more videos from you, and have subscribed to your channel. I'm also now following your blog, and your facebook page. I will write you a proper letter, by post, and introduce myself more thoroughly next Saturday, which is my correspondence day (according to Mrs. Beeton).. I just wanted to briefly introduce myself, and thank you for posting this video and let you know I am pleased to meet another family "out-of-time" who are maintaining the higher quality lifestyle and basic values of when we were getting more things right than we are now. I hope to see more, and am looking forward to hopefully engendering a friendship with you and your husband.
    Yours Truly,
    L.R.S. McKinley

I too have a Darcy Clothiers shirt. I don’t have a collar for it yet, but what excellent quality it is. I also got a pair of fishtail back trousers in moleskin. I found Darcy Clothiers because I was searching for trousers with a button fly. I remember button fly trousers when I was little. If you lose a button, it’s unnoticeable, not so with zip fly trousers which, when the zip goes, suddenly leaves one ‘open to the world’ and the frantic search for a safety pin begins lol.

I can't even describe how excited I was when I saw this on my feeds. I just watched it on my phone with candlelights, we have no power in Miami because of Hurricane Irma. I just realized that I could live a Victorian life. I like it better with candlelight and no fridge noises. My fridge is stuffed with ice and surprisingly the food is still fresh after 3 days. A big part of me doesn't want the power back on. How fitting that this video came on at a time when I have to watch it by candlight. I love it :) I love everything about the video. Thank you Sarah.

We have saved/restored four Victorians and enjoy living in the past as well though I have a modern stove and Kirby vacuum cleaner. I have always called myself a "Victorian Historian" for my love of the Victorians has spanned well over 55 years.

I used to be a jeans and T-shirts girl, but once I started wearing skirts, it was all over for me. I'm a little more steampunk than Victorian, but I love all things Victorian because of that.

Seeing your den made me run up and get a very old prayer book my uncle, dad's brother, had that was signed by their uncle. It's signed and dated by Uncle Sam in 1900. The cool thing about it other than being 122 years old is that dad's father was a year old in 1900, mom's dad was born in 1900, mom's mom wouldn't be born until 1904 and my parents and uncle wouldn't be born until 1921, 1927 and 1931. The inner book binding has the look of your wall paper. Other than yellowed pages they're in excellent condition. No doubt Uncle Sam had the heater you showed and lamps like you showed. The front has metal decorations and latches but whatever was attached long ago fell off. I come from an old family whose long ago relatives were even before Uncle Sam. So I have a 19th and early to mid 20th century family and in the signing Uncle Sam put the English calendar date of December 29th 1900, but in the Hebrew calendar he put in the year would be far in the future. 5661. So we have past and far future. No doubt Uncle Sam had that heater and lamps as a regular thing as he was 19th century born but don't know when. I come from an old family.

I like the way you dress! I'm a "Baby Boomer" I guess. I was born in 1959. I see nothing wrong with your chosen lifestyle. In fact, it reminds me of visiting my Grandparents' home in Olalla, B. C. Canada. My mom has a desk just like yours, and she uses it to keep her sewing things and other things in. I think you are very interesting! I used to be a member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, and got to dress in lovely, home-sewn 12th Century garb, when I attended Dance classes or went to special events. I learnt a lot about life in the Middle Ages that way, just as you are learning about the Victorian Era. Even though I don't wear 12th century clothes all the time, I think what you have chosen to do is great! I am sorry that others have been so cruel and rude to you! Maybe their ignorance is getting in the way. I like doing many "old-fashioned" things that young people don't think are cool, such as writing real letters, sewing, reading real books instead of E-Books, and going without a cell phone. I do have a cell phone, but only use it in case of emergencies. I sigh when I see people glued to their cell phones! I once saw a man walk into a tree because he was staring at his phone instead of watching where he was going! Any way, I wish you and your husband well! Cheers! ~Janet in Canada

An excellent video! It was very helpful for me; I'm trying to include as many Victorian elements in my home as possible, with the goal of it becoming wholly or mostly a historical reproduction. If possible, in the future I'd love to see a quick tour of the bedroom/toilet or vanity, as I've been having a bit of trouble finding extant guides on decorating such a space, and I feel like my own room is almost but not quite as historical as it ought to be.

It's very sad that they dont do more videos. You wonder if they're still about. I hope all is well with them

I use one of those Perfection heaters camping. It's amazing how much heat they put out.

In Australia we call the heater a blue flame, and I must admit cooking with a blue flame heater in winter is the best.
I do have lamps, and soaked the wicks in white vinegar and after they dry, they don't smoke in the lamps, I cook and clean as 1900. I don't like electronics's as much.

Hello Sarah! Heather from Michigan here. I'm in love with all things historical and would love a video dedicated to a demonstration of your Chatelaine! Also your den has sparked my curiosity of what the remainder of your 1800's house holds. Would you consider a full house tour video? I would particularly love it due to having recently bought a house built in 1864 that we are restoring. Any details you could give in making it historically accurate are greatly appreciated! Thank you for sharing with us Sarah.

I love how you use real Victorian people as inspiration for the characters in your book.

Love your wallpaper. When I was a kid a friend of mine gave me a lamp like your first you showed. I didn't know what to do with it. Never seen one before as a kid. I wish I still had it.

What does your house look like inside and out and how many years of collecting and finishing the interior did it take you. I think it's incredible what you both have accomplished. Would love to see video's on your routines together for preparing and eating beakfast, dinner and supper. Actually your channel would probably triple in subs if your video's were around daily life at the house and on outings I'm sure we'd all love it. Thanks for sharing.

I am what you might call an extreme feminist, and I want you to know that I support (and envy) you. I love that you’re following your dreams and living the way you want to live.

Sarah, for your pencil lead, check a "Drafting Supply" store. Pentel mechanical pencils are very popular and come in many different lead sizes.

12:16 The foot rest was actually used for someone suffering from gout and were common in the Victorian era as well as the early 1900's. The ankle would rest on the round part of the foot rest to relieve the suffering of a swollen ankle.

We had a kerosene lamp until I was about 7 (I am almost 19 now), and now I know why the chimney always got just a little smoked up.
P.S., We have a similar desk (but not with such heritage, just a desk we like), and one of the wooden things that support the desk surface isn't staying up properly, so I was wondering what you do about that.
