I painted loads of cars in the 70's and 80's , and we only had enamel single stage with thinners no harder back then . Two coats and they would look like glass, no wet sanding or all that buffing , they do today . A better finish and lasted longer . This clear coat these days can't take the sun , you see cars only a few years old with the clear coat peeling . The good old days , the paint was far better and a fast job.

Yeah, but didn't they change the paints because they were awful for the environment or something like that? Same thing with the dyes they used to use on automotive interiors were very color fast and sturdy but caused every kind of cancer imaginable.

I here ya painted plenty of single stage back in the day, plenty of depth not like the junk sprayed today with no shine or depth.

      @apg9345 Před 4 lety +2

Paint is better today as it is urethane based,I will say it is a lot more expensive so you tend to see cars that have been painted having problems from someone using cheap material or trying to shortcut the job.I know when newer cars are painted in the factory they do not put enough material on one either which also leads to color problems for the shop repairing the vehicle.

With the high metallics, and tri coats, it would be next to impossible to spray the new colors and duplicate the depth with single stage.

I painted few dodge and peugeots on single stage. White and black.
Using paint made in mex, it works awesome and has the same life as a clear coat. (5 years on acrílic single stage and médium quality clear).
On the poliurethane single stage, it has 8-10 years of life.
Both are for low cost but has very great results and quality.
Even I've been sprying pearled red, greys, greens, silvers on single stage on chevys and volkswagens 😁

I must remember on the very final coat to slow down a bit as apposed to the first top coat.
I had runs on the bus i painted today, only on the final coat.. I went to fast and go further enough over my overlaps/
Too much paint on the masking ran onto the surface.. I'm a rookie and the company allows for mistakes.. But I'll practice more on some panels for a few weeks before going onto the vehicles ..
Great video and hands down to that experienced painter.. No substitute for experience, very clean
    professional work.

Hey guys. I have a lot to learn. I am still confused between sealer and primer and epoxy primer. And there is paint with just reducer and paint with hardener and reducer and paint with a clear coat. I painted my interior with single-stage paint. It looked great when I was finished, but it became dull in about a month. It was mason paint I think from Napa. So many questions and not as many answers. Thanks for sharing.👍👍

    • @Refinishnetwork
      @Refinishnetwork  Před 4 lety +2

Hey, I’ll try and clear some things up for you. Sealer always refers to a 2 part primer that doesn’t require sanding before paint. Epoxy primer uses a different resin than a regular primer(primer surfacer). Epoxy provides superior protection, but it is slow drying and doesn’t fill as well. Epoxy can also be used just as a metal treatment or sealer, many of these primers can be versatile and combined in the process in multiple ways. I could not answer as to why it went dull, that would require a deeper understanding of the process you followed.

@@Refinishnetwork Thanks for your input. I am just doing my own ride. I don't plan on doing this for a living. When I get my truck ready for paint, I want to do it once. Right now it is sitting with some parts in red primer of who knows what it is, Paint is dark blue and who knows how old and some bondo areas and bare metal. I was thinking maybe I should spray it with some kind of primer or sealer when I finish the body job and then paint it. I am going with a flat black os hot rod black as my topcoat.

Depends on the air temperature and if your using a slow or fast hardener. After 1st coat touch a part of the masking tape. If it feels sticky like tape, its ready for the second coat. If its not sticky and feels wet..... Wait longer.

Here on Maui we have high UV . I cannot get clear coat to last on outdoor kept vehicles.
I’ve found that white single stage lasts longer with an occasional waxing.
I hate to paint but I hate ugly sun burnt cars even more.
Older cars don’t look good or right to me with clear coat anyways and I don’t drive newer vehicles anyways.
Single stage let’s me sand my way out of problems painting at home.
I asked the airplane guys how they were doing it . Now I know why so many planes are white.

As an 18 year old in high school who is in a auto body class, i can do my best to explain this if you still need the info. Before applying sealer, I wiper the whole panel that I will spray, down with wax and grease remover, then I blow it off using a blow gun, and then I use a tack rag. I spray the sealer light as in all I want on the panel is just the color. You don't want the sealer super wet. Again sorry for the late reply, but if you need any further help, i can do my best to explain!

If the original single coat paint is good and we just want a repaint do you sand it first before applying the sealer. The reason I ask, is that the paint job that I followed did not give me the right paint so I will be painting over this paint job and I’m wondering how to proceed sealer and the paint or sand sealer and the paint?

Great job and the explanation was fantastic. Question for you...on single stage paint, I was told to do it in three coats: 1. light coat to provide a bite for the 2nd coat. 2. medium wet coat. 3. final medium wet coat. I've been having issues with graininess after applying a few coats of single stage black. Thanks again.

So with single stage paints they can be quite fusssy on how they are layed down my advise is spray similar to laquer/clearcoat. These paints are usually fairly dense so a bit of a higher pressure and fan adjustment is usually needed. Watch a few videos on setting a gun up for laquer and work from there.

I tried one tack coat plus one wet coat and it runs, I tried one wet coat and it runs. I am starting to think it has something to do with the hardener. I am using PPG paint. Yes, and he’s within 2-3 inches away instead of 4-5 so I guess if you like a thinner pattern and you want to spray close it’s a matter of adjusting your gun/compressor in this case a lower flow and psi.

Look at 8:22 in the vid- the Tekna gun has a monster fan about a foot wide. It looks like he overlaps a lot. Even and wet!
Would have been nice to know which fluid tip, which air cap, how many turns out and air pressure. I'm guessing 1.2 tip, TE20 cap, 4 turns out at 29 psi. Comment?

Whoops- down the replies he said 1.3 tip and HVLP cap. That dude can really lay it on!
Thanks for the vid. Now I'm guessing the pressure was 22 psi...

Thanks for the tips. Is there debris on the new paint? Is that A common thing to fix in a booth?

There may be a few dirt specs that could be polished out, I am not exactly sure what you're referring to.

It’s there a career for just painter or do you have to know the whole art of body work?

You don't have to know how to do bodywork but you usually can't just step into a booth and start painting. I'm an apprentice painter and I do most of the prep work (Prime, sand, mask). Called learning and paying dues but it's worth it to me.
