- Today I’m spraying direct gloss single stage paint with a low cfm R500 spray gun on the Toyota Corolla. With this lvlp spray gun and a small compressor I was able to achieve a nice gloss finish on a budget with great results.

I am 67 years old and learning how to spray. First off you are a wonderful painter as you have a steady hand and great vision. But the reason I wrote this message is to commend you on how well you explain what you are doing. You have taught this old dog some new tricks and I am very pleased with my progress. Just wanted to thank you.
Thank you Harley🙏🏽 I really appreciate you and I hope that I can continue to be helpful with the channel!
@UndergroundPaintKing the best part is that you don't take paint sectets to the grave like so many painters.
Im 30
Toyota looking like new money now King 👑 I don’t get a chance to spray single stage much but when I do I enjoy it. We all get runs man, that’s just part of the field 👍🏾
Appreciate you Sprayway and you’re right, getting runs is part of the paint game💯💪🏾
If you're not getting runs, you're not painting. Nice job, U P KING!!
😂 appreciate you checking out the work Garage Hack!
Man same thing happens to me on them single stages. Even the best of us get them dam runs. Salute for even showing the errors. I do the same thing in my channel show the good the bad and the ugly. the fast hardener and medium reducer should have been fine. I do that combo as well. Sometimes what I'll do is mix up all my paint and at a few drops of accelerator then let the paint sit for about 15 minutes so it starts to kick. On smaller cars like that one of course. Man I got a big ass run to wet sand out Monday when I get to work 😒🤦🏽♂️🥺 good job king keep em rolling 💪🏼
I thought about letting it sit for a little bit to kick in but I was ready to get this one done bro but I definitely have learned that when I rush something is bound to go wrong 😂 appreciate you checking out the video bro 💪🏾
@@UndergroundPaintKing yep everytime we rush 😂😂 ✊🏼
Got the beater with a heater looking a whole lot sweeter! Lol… good job my man

@@traviswalls8604 thanks Travis, I appreciate that 🙏🏽💯
One thing I learned over the years is to do the top sections first like roof , bonnet and trunk by painting each full panel before moving onto another panel and then I do the sides. Setting up the gun is very important for fan , paintflow and air pressure regulation and using a good water trap regulator as well as a water moisture and regulator right at my gun. I found 30 to 40 psi is good pressure to paint just about anything , from Raptor liner , stone chip and base or clear coats and always get great results. I also wet the floor to minimise dust. Great video
Thanks for the info Dan💯
Be very careful for too much reducer also don't spray to close , a good 8" is just goooood. Moving speed and paint flow as well as pressure is all factors playing a part for a bad paint job. Some different types of paint can also play a part.
Using both hands! That's why your the paint king!
Thanks Gomer I appreciate that 💯🙏🏽
YES ! Finally , lol Im sure I asked a few months ago if we could have the sprayIT spraying single stage, thanks UPK ,you a legend.😀👍🏾👌🏽

You’re welcome Robert, I’m glad the video was helpful!
your talking is good my friend...your thorough and its how you teach other...talking and showing...thats what makes you great to watch...
Thank you Lito I appreciate you 🙏🏽💯
I enjoy you being honest ! Helps for beginners to understand that mistakes going to be happening and not to be afraid to deal with them . They are part of the process . I would also say it’s more easy to fix runs than to cut and buff the whole car because of orange peal . Your gloss was spot on !
Thanks M-511, I appreciate you and you’re right that the mistakes are part of the process and knowing how to fix the mistakes are just as important!
Looks good upk. Nice job
Thanks James I really appreciate you my friend!
Looks like a good job with the single stage paint. You showed me what a single stage is.
Thanks Robert, I appreciate you checking out the video!
Another job well done King.
Appreciate you Koolhandduke 💯
Love these videos - this may have been a $700 car. Super tiring to hear folks say you need a $2000 compressor, $800 gun, and $3000 of PPG paint on projects like this. Auto paint hobby is full of elitist snobbery. This looks great and probably triples the value of the vehicle. Really appreciate your content.
Glad you enjoy the videos Dan and you definitely don’t have to spend thousands to do paint work!
Great as always!

Back my stage days we use to cover primer spots first then 1 medium coat and the last coat was heavy as possible would come out great no buffing at all you did a great job on this thanks for posting
And we ran the paint often cause single stage takes longer to dry and its heavier
I knew it was a possibility of me running that paint but I’ve never been scared of runs 😂 thanks Joe I really appreciate you checking out the video!

Man, that white went on nice. Very satisfying to watch. A few runs....No biggie
Yeah it looked good and gave the Corolla some life! I appreciate you checking it out PStreet Garage 💯
So glad you showed this. Since I don't have a garage. I'm thinking about shooting my car one panel at a time. I know it'll take forever and I'll use more materials. But I'll probably be shooting outside with a small compressor. I figured if I do it one panel at a time I can take my time and make sure each panel is straight and clean. Then spray 2-3 coats of single stage white on Saturday. By Sunday I can get it ready to go back to work Monday. It's gonna take a few months. But it's better than rushing and messing something up. After it's all done, if it needs it, I can sand it and put another coat on the whole car. But if I take my time I shouldn't need to
You have a good plan and it should work well for you!
One panel at a time works fine with unicolour paint.
That's how i do it too, because i have no paint booth and, making a huge mess and a big cloud for all neighbours to watch, the landlord will throw me out.
And because i don't paint enough to get routine.
Avoid this technique with metallic. The flakes tend to look different each time you spray.
With metallic better do one side at a time, according to body lines.
Edit: i see, you don't have metallic anyhow. Simple glossy white is great for diy. Glossy black not so much 😆
Excellent tutorial
Thanks, I appreciate you checking out the video and I’m glad it was helpful 💯

Great video! I purchased rattle can color matched but the nozzles kept splattering. I decided to wet sand with 1000 grit and will now be spraying single stage with my R500. This video once again helped me navigate what I need to do.
I’m glad the video was helpful Alex and I appreciate you checking it out!
Unlike base and clear coats your first coat being a tack coat on single stage should have little overlay. Once the tack coat flashed off then go to a heavier overlay. Even still, your doing a great job!
Thanks Biggysground, I appreciate you for the tip 🙏🏽💯

best way i found from doing garden paint jobs is to either do it when its hot out or in a heated garage of if you're doing one area heat with a heat gun before hand or what i do is dont go so wet , put lots of coats on and sand and buff later or mist the first coat then go heavier each coat
Thanks for those tips Sam💯💪🏾

Thank you for the great videos, especially this one on spraying single stage. I have been doing my 36 coupe in stages, fenders, doors, trunk lid etc. This works best for me as I can concentrate on keeping on task. I'm 77 and It's difficult for me to move around a car in a small garage and I tire easily. I did the doors and trunk lid yesterday and as difficult as black is to spray (shows up any imperfections) it came out great. I have been using a 33 gal compressor with the lvlp 500 Sprayit gun that I have learned about watching your videos as well. Thank you!
You’re welcome and I really appreciate you watching the videos and I’m glad the videos were helpful Francis! I’d like to see your finished product when you’re done

King another great video. Thank you so much sir for doing this for us.
questions I have
1. Is single stage easier to do for beginner or or 2 stage (base and clear)?
2. Why do you want to do single stage vs 2 stage?
3. Do you think for classic car single stage is better ?
4. Does single stage last as long as 2 stage?
Maybe if you can do a video explaining advantage and disadvantage of each?
It depends on what you plan on spraying honestly, solid color single stage can be easy for a beginner but metallic single stage can be difficult but with base clear it can be a little more forgiving with different techniques when it comes to spraying metallic.
For a lot of people, I believe cost plays a big factor in choosing single stage over base clear and when single stage is done right it has a great finish.
I honestly can’t say that single stage is better for classic cars, I think that’s really determined by what kind of finished product you’re looking for.
If both are done right and kept up with, and maintained I believe they both will last for a long time.
I hope that was helpful and I’ll try to to do a video on this subject Borna Nel
I bet the customer wasn't complaining its single stage paint this not a real paintjob lil light buff we out !! 💯

Think of it like spraying clear on a cold day !!! spray 1st coat and check your paper to see how tacky it is before shooting your 2nd round (temperature can be your friend or enemy ) you got this don't sweat it
Thanks for that tip I’ll definitely keep it in mind when I spray some metallic 💯
Thank you😎👍

I love your videos! You have taught me a lot. I run two 20-gallon compressors connected together. Do you use a fan for air circulation? Whatever you use, it seems to work great! I don't see a lot of overspray in the air.
Thanks Bill , I appreciate you watching the videos and yes I have a exhaust system in my shop that keeps the overspray to a minimum

Surprised there's so little overspray, I would have paint all over my floor and garage! Nice job, looks great, just get those runs out and done.
Yeah this spray gun is very low on overspray which makes it a great option for DIYers doing it at home in a garage! I’m gonna knock out them runs and it’s going out the door 👌🏾appreciate you checking out the video!

You put the first coat on too wet you need to have a cover coat in medium giving enough time between 1st and 2nd coat for the paint to have something to stick to! After two coats for leveling you can add some reducer and do multiple misting costs for leveling! You also need to have a plan in painting you were a little helder skelder!
Appreciate you checking out the video Robert
Looks good .

@@UndergroundPaintKing You Welcome , I always been a car builder of sorts I say it like that because I'm the average blue collar hard working guy and never really had the money I would like to go all the way on my builds . I'm ready to take some chances and try and finish some of my projects to sell I have quite a few but really don't have a choice I'm getting divorced soon and will stepping up my game to finish vehicles to get more money out of them. Anyways I always been a good sprayer but body work not so much and the saying is 90% body work and 10% paint is the truth. I'm just watching people do what I like and want to learn. I really don't have a lot of time I'm self employed and work almost every day but I"m going to start a youtube channel my self and see where it goes at first it will just be a go-pro unedited video for a little while. Great job as usual I have been told to not try single stage for your first paint job. Will single stage hold up to UV rays
.I will definitely b watching for more single stage. Thanks
Depending on where you are you may want to spray clear over the single stage. I think metallic single stage can be harder but still doable
Nice job bro. I can’t wait to paint my car I have to wait till the summer. Here in Washington it too cold. Do you have the website you buy your paint from.
Thanks I appreciate you Rafael and I get my paint locally but you can check with SPEEDOKOTE, a lot of people talk about it and use it and hopefully that weather will break for you soon 💯
Man, your videos are AWESOME, thanks a lot!
I just got a Vevor 4.8 Gallons 2.2CFM@90PSI and I didn't realize that something similar to this size might be actually capable to be used to paint cars. Do you think that I have to upgrade to at least to a Vevor 6.3 Gallons 3.35CFM@90PSI compressor before even thinking about painting my car with an R500 LVLP gun using a single stage paint?
Or even that would be too small of a compressor?
BTW, huuuuge thanks for showing that runs on the paint, because most CZcamsrs are showing only their perfect jobs on the perfectly prepared cars and the problem is that I haven't done a single car painting job in my life, obviously I'll have a car not perfectly prepared and obviously I'll have runs and all sorts of other problems with applying the paint so big shout out to you for showing that this might happen and what to do to avoid or correct that.
And thanks for showing step by step how to prep the car, how to set up the gun, what problems you may get and so on. It's all in a few vids and it's super informative.
You're the best, keep it up for the beginners like me to get out and try to do something too, no matter that it won't be perfect from the first try!
You’re welcome and I’m glad the videos have been helpful and I appreciate you checking them out, it’s my goal to help as many people as possible! As far as compressor suggestions go, you want to get a compressor that will consistently deliver the cfm required by the spray gun which in the case of the R500 is 3.5-3.9 cfm and if you’re doing a whole vehicle I recommend a bigger tank around 21-30 gallons which will make things much easier for you. You can do a lot with the smaller tank compressors but doing a whole vehicle with one can be challenging. I hope that helps 💯
@@UndergroundPaintKingit sure does, thank you!

I just painted single-stage white paint today on our work truck. Nason brand what I found out about runs was I was overlapping too much and moving a little too slow.
I only had 1 run in the paint and this is a single axle dump truck with 3 coats of paint.
I thought I was moving pretty fast but I honestly think my air regulator was taking a dump on me🤦🏽♂️ I appreciate you checking out the video!
@UndergroundPaintKing No problem bro don't know if this makes a difference I was painting acrylic enamel I think u said u were using acrylic urethane??
I also was spraying at 30 psi.
@@ysitrim88 I’m gonna try a few tests panels and get it down!
Work slowly and do everything possible to control the moisture from small air compressors...moisture control is the key factor.
Thanks I appreciate the advice Rick!
Depending on how your gun flows out the paint and compressor specifically weather temperature humidity all plays a part
Typically I use a slow to very slow reducer out of a 1.3 hte gun
The gun settings also play a part 2 bars cfm material wide open till hits trigger full fan open
First coat med wet
Let the reducer flow the paint while it dries
Next coat medium heavy
Last coat if needed before it dries still semi wet throw a fast wet coat that's it
Thanks for the info Paul, I really appreciate you🙏🏽💯
Whats small size compressor you running now?keep up the good work!
Thanks Rudy, I appreciate you and The compressor I use is a 21 gallon compressor💯
Love the Videos UPK, wanted to pick your brain on painting an auction purchased crown vic that has white doors and front and back is black. I want to paint it a solid black color, would you suggest single stage or BC/CC. How would you tackle such a difference in colors on the body panels. Should I prime the white with tinted primer and then spray the whole car black? What are your thoughts....
I honestly think either way, bc/cc or single stage would work great for what you want to do and if you simply have to sand the panels with no bodywork you could possibly paint the whole vehicle without having to prime or seal anything but it just depends on the condition of the vehicle. If it’s a simple sand and paint I probably would paint the white doors first and get good coverage on them then continue with the rest of the body until I have good coverage. Hope that helps Denis!
Light sand buff takes care of the sags
I have a video of me fixing the sags and they came out fine Arnie!

Great work, Sir! I have a question for you.. Can both a Volkswagen LA7W Standox solvent base (+60% of acrylic thinner) and the next 2K anti-scratch clear coat (mixing ratio: 2:1+10% of acrylic thinner) be sprayed with a H-2000 mini gun having a 0.5 mm tip? Or is it required a bigger tip? I have to do only a little spot repair. Thanks a lot!
Thanks Massimo I appreciate you and your mini gun should be able to do the spot repair for you
good job, so before you spray are you clean car with degreaser or acetone?
Thanks I appreciate you and I usually use grease and wax remover
White is fine. But other colors just don't hold up in shine after a year or two in hot sun. And don't mix bends of hardened, reducer etc with paint. Use all the same brand. This can make the paint job last much longer
Thanks for the tips, I personally don’t mix brands but I’m sure that’ll help someone that sees your comment
wow you managed a whole car in one go with a small compressor, didnt know that was possible. How big is your compressor in this video? Mine is 50litres (11 gallon) so hoping that's enough. Thanks for the vid!
My compressor is a 21 gallon compressor and depending on what you’re spraying you would be able to do it with your compressor, you mainly want a compressor that will be capable of handling the paint gun
Good job 👍🏻
What was the pressure you used?
Thanks I appreciate you watching the video and I believe I put the pressure at the beginning of me starting to spray the car🙏🏽
I added two clear coats over my single stage paint job cause my truck is street parked, in California, with minimal shade , the sun is harsh here on paint jobs. Just an extra precaution
