    Feels bad for Chris Amon who lead the most laps without a win

    • @jamesshunt5123
      @jamesshunt5123 Před 3 lety +7

      Yes, 183 laps in the lead without ever winning is unfair when 1961 world champion Phil Hill lead 171 laps in total in his entire F1 career. Jackie Stewart considered Chris Amon "One of the three best drivers I ever raced against." Always in the wrong team at the wrong time. I'm surprised the mentioned Italy 1971 when Canada 1968 (72 laps lead in grand style only to retire with gearbox issues) and France 1972 (was cruising to an easy victory when a puncture forced him to pit and rejoin in 8th, still finished a great 3rd).
      He was still proving his talent and speed in the 1976 Swedish GP when he qualified an Ensign(!) 3rd while Lauda qualified his Ferrari in 5th and James Hunt his McLaren 8th. In the race itself Amon held 4th with his Ensign for 37 laps and Lauda couldn't get past him and was stuck in 5th (driving a much faster Ferrari) for all those 37 laps until Amon retired with technical mishaps.
      Anyways, he won the 1966 LeMans with Bruce McLaren. No matter what Hollywood tries to convince people it was Dan Gurney who sailed off into the distant lead with his Ford GT40 while the other Fords were told to "stand back and not give chase". When Gurney retired from the lead with merely 4 hours to go Amon wanted to race Ken Miles for the win but was ordered to "hold position". Had he been able to do so I have little doubt he'd catch him and win in great style. Instead Miles crossed the line first but McLaren/Amon won the race by virtue of having traveled a longer distance. Nobody but the French organizers knew of this rule at the time.
      While manufactured Hollywood drama will tell you Miles would have won it easily it's false. Gurney was slated to win easily when his car broke down and Amon and Bruce McLaren were preventing from racing Miles/Hulme.
      McLaren and Amon were worthy winners of the race even if it happened due to unexpected events.
      In the Motorsport Magazine Top 100 Drivers of All Time, Chris Amon ranked #24.

    What is even more amazing about Damon Hill's bad luck is that Germany 1993 wasnt his first win attempt:
    France 1993: Team orders, he handed the victory to Prost. They finished the race less than a second from each other.
    Great Britain 1993: He was leading the race by far and then.... engine failure.
    Germany 1993: the puncture.
    All those 3 races in succession!.
    Afterwards: Hungary, Belgium and Italy all victories for him. Next race, Portugal, he had to start from the back of the grid (engine stall on parade lap, he was on pole position) and finished 3rd 8s away from Schumacher and Prost! By the way he was fighting the championship with Prost that race.
    Totally underrated driver.
