- Happy new year my cactus friends! I want to thank each and every one of you for joining me and Cookie on another fun year of cactus-ing! For those of you who stuck with me through all the ups and the downs over the year, watching me learn not only about cactus and succulents but about video making and editing and navigating Cookie's health problems, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!
For this last video of 2023, we are back at Bach's Greenhouse Cactus Nursery in Tucson, AZ. This is my attempt at making a better video than the first one after I received a number of complaints that I moved too fast in the first video. Well, I tried again with my new fixed-lens camera but I'm not sure I improved at all on the pacing - it's the best I can do to cover such a large space in a limited amount of time!
P.S. My mom reads every single comment that you all leave on these videos. She loves them!

Don't worry about the critical comments. You're great! My family loves watching your videos! I don't think you need acid for the Echinocactus horizanthalonius. This is my first year with them. I have seeds from several sources, and they're doing really well. I do use 3% hydrogen peroxide, and maybe that's the key. The peroxide is known to eat away at the husk. Aside from that, and some different soil, you and I basically have the same methodology. Happy New Year's! I hope you keep up the great work and great content!

@@ceciliaarchibold8187 I use 3% peroxide to sterilize my soil and seeds. I soak each pot in it before sowing, then spray them with it again after sowing. But it also helps weaken the shell for germination

I love the multiple heads mammillaria. My 3 years old mammillaria hahniana currently has 5 pups growing out of it, but the pubs are still on the small size.
That's so awesome that you got pups on your hahniana! The only one I've gotten to pup is a tinnnnnny little plant that got damaged by the darn birds. I think I have two other hahniana and they grow verrrrryy slow, and no pups yet.

This place looks incredible. I usually stop at Arid Lands whenever I’m in Tucson because it’s so close to my in-laws, but I need to make this a priority next time I’m down there.
It's definitely worth a visit (or two or three)! And I need to prioritize visiting Arid Lands lol! Arid Lands and B&B are just that extra 30 min drive that makes me never go there, darn it!

I'm a bonsai guy but I came across a Euphorbia Lactea Cristata a week ago at my local asian market. It looked hella weird, I ended up buying two of them and now I'm into cacti and succulents. I like the weird mutated looking ones. nice video, awesome narration. keep it up and enjoy creating :)

Are you kidding me, only $14.95 for a 1 gallon pot. That is phenomenal, I’ve never seen prices that good on a 1 gallon pot. And what a good selection. I’ve already seen about 10 I would love. You are so fortunate to be that close. I hope you picked up a couple. Keep recording, you did awesome.

If it wasn't for your videos, especially the lazy seed sowing series , I may have taken years to decide to sow my own cactus seeds (even though I've started many other plants from seed , I was afraid of starting cactus lol)

My seeds have all germinated thankfully, (18 different kinds from Rob ) some already have spines . I just ordered over 200 Astrophytum seeds from Mesa Gardens too lol.
Without your videos I probably would have never sown cactus seeds.

I really like your cactus content, especially the videos where you show off pretty plants are very relaxing to me, not ‘lacking’ at all.
This nursery is sooooo much better than my own close by big chain nursery. There’s not really any cacti or succulent specialized nursery in my country that’s often open to the general public that you can physically visit. I regularly go to my nearest garden center to buy pots and such, and every time I come there I check the cactus and succulent table. Every time I see the same thing, a completely shriveled and white, small sad looking Cereus forbesii spiralis that’s not recognizable from what the plant is supposed to look like for almost 20 euros or something...
They haven’t removed that dead plant in weeks if not months... Really doesn’t give me confidence they care for them that well, or even look at them from time to time 😓 Most interesting thing on that table is a huge and expensive Tephrocacus geometricans for almost 500 euros. Don’t think anyone is ever going to buy it, and I’m kind of scared it will just die in their care, but I check up on it every time lol.
There are some nice local smaller plant shops, but those don’t tend to have a lot of cacti either, mostly monsteras, philodendrons, begonias and those type of plants.

That is so interesting that they have a tephrocactus available like that. I wonder how long it has been there. You know, even here I see sad cactus at our big box stores too. It's quite sad. The way it works is that the nursery that supplies the plants is supposed to take care of the plants at the store, not the store employees themselves. It's really too bad ...

@@cookiescacti Tucson, we usually try and go early as possible, this time of year can be difficult. BACH’s wasn’t bad, kept hydrated. Stopped at Green Things when we left BACH’s, it was about 11:30 by the time we got there. It was pretty warm. If we hadn’t run out of water, and money 🤣 we would have stood longer

I just watched the whole video and I think you did a fabulous job I just retired here in Las Cruces New Mexico and I can't wait to go to Tucson and go to Bachs nursery to buy landscape stock.
My dad and I stayed in Las Cruces on the way home from a trip to Roswell last summer. How are you liking it so far? Are there any cactus nurseries? The great thing is that you're not way too far from Tucson 😁
I know there are a few nurseries here I'm not sure if they specialize in just cactus I don't think so I'm not sure though it's winter time and the nurseries really don't do much here during the winter but anyway I will definitely check it out but yeah I had already planned to go to Tucson to get my cactus because there are so many varieties

I've always wondered what the secret is with these growers. I asked the owner of Arizona cactus sales if he knew and he said it's all about time. I've purchased these plants and I potted them before, lots of bark, pumice, and organics. I wish I could pick the brain of a professional grower someday!

For me 2021 was soil better soil, 2022 was more plants, 2023 was pots more real pots no more plastic, 2024 is shelter for sommer and winter, all my benches and stands are old recykled stuff and greenhouse is leaking.

That's a good question! I tried reviewing but I moved too fast for it to be clear. Very rough guess is some sort of Mammillaria but it could also be perhaps a parodia? Maybe it'll still be there next time and I can take a closer look

Yeah, it is tough when you're learning plant IDs to not have them available. If you ever go in person the employees are super helpful with questions on IDs.
Try some shots on your knees to show how they look from the side.
I'll keep that in mind next time! My body is becoming less cooperative with time, getting harder and harder to get into unnatural positions.

Did you watch the first 30 seconds of the video? It explains why I made this video in the first place. I got this camera specifically to handle movement because lots of ppl complained about my old camera and how it moved and made them sick. Now I spent the money to buy a camera that handles movement much better and this is the comment I get. Seems I can't please everyone.
