bro the amount of stoke i feel when you CHUCK parts on bikes. Chucking parts on bikes is a state of mind
hahah just gotta chuck it on and see what happens
That’s why I like watching gary’s videos which tell me how to fix my bike instead of buying a new one🎉
Thank you very much Jason ! Thanks for watching :)
When working on bikes, always have a pile of pumpkin seeds by your side for both you and the birds! Very important!
Hahaha my kid was trying to lure birds
Truly beautiful build. New skool MTBs might be better for shredding the gnar, but having grown up with '90s MTBs, their 'look' gets me right in the feels. Thanks, Gary, for making me smile. Love seeing your bike build journeys.
Thank you so much I appreciate that ! Ya the old school mtbs have more of a “racing “ profile I think! Looks cool
Same with me, growing up as as teenager in the '90s... I hava an irrational love for those bikes...
Hey Gary i learn so much of your vids even the black house paint trick is gold ! And the shim in the headtube ....brilliant brother i dont think people realise how skillful ,resourceful these tips are thank you brother !
thats awesome! glad to hear it. just a few tips to get your bike running again👍👍👍
@@garysprojects thanks gary i flip refurbish old bikes as a hobby love your stuff
@@cezrok5405 that’s great !! Save those old bikes ♻️😊✌️
That's a looker. The color and contrast, stance and parts list prove this to be a labour of love. Also, love your approach to problem solving. 👍
cheers my dude i appreciate that! it was fun getting everything together and having it finally work haha. happy with how it turned out. cheers!
Good video, loves 90s MTBs, love one you built, keep on grindin.
Thank you mate I appreciate that !! Will do my best cheers 😊
Nice shifters! Never seen them before. I really enjoy watching your build, makes me want to dismantle my bike for no reason :)
haha cheers! they are nice for saving some handle bar room with the integrated shifters. thank you i appreciate that! you should give it a try quite fun haha
Nice attention to detail and some serious effort on the lever clamps. Cool build!
Thank you I appreciate that !! Haha the brakes were a huge mission ngl 🙌🙌
Omigosh! I had that exact same Mountain LX grouppo on my 1st MTB! Down to the Biopace triple!
Fantastic build. I thoroughly enjoyed watching the entire thing.
Thanks for sharing! 👏🏻👌🏼
wow awesome! its a classic groupset, very nice. cheers my dude glad you like the video!
Thank you for the nice video.
If I may, two little pieces of advice from me:
1. When you use detergents to clean your derailleur, you should deassembly the entire part and lubricate it (especially the mainspring and derailleur cage spring).
2. It would be a good idea if you level the ends of the cables with a locksmith's file or an angle grinder to prevent damage to the Cable End Crimps
Thank you for the tips ! Sometimes I use a bit of lube in the derailleur after - that helps too ! Cheers 😊
Great looking bike. So much problem solving!
Thank you mate! Haha yes had to sort out a few for this bike! Happy I got there at the end 😆
Great looking build like always Gary!
Cheers Nate I appreciate that!
Ibis mountain trials, endless lifetime, cannondale beast of the east, love it!!
yessss old school mullets!! would love to try those too. cheers!
Very cool build, simple and smooth looking bike.
Thank you very much !
Absolutely epic build mate ..... Love this one ... Keep up the great work
Thank you my dude I appreciate that , will do my best 👍
So many hacks on this, 90s mullet is a total mind blower. Would love to tske this for a spin!
cheers my dude , hahah yea its super fun!! good to switch it up sometimes
@@garysprojects Love the silver parts btw it's just classy
@brrrt6666 cheers mate I think so too !
Discovered your channel a few months back, really enjoy your videos dude! Inspired me to fix up my beat up old Giant Yukon which has been sitting at my parents for the last 10 years!
Thank you my dude I appreciate that! You should do it up that’s a solid bike, will be fun !
Nice looking bike.
Thanks for posting
Cheers Andy thanks for watching!
I love watching the build, but i always wanna see more shred vids like back in the day. These bikes look best on the streets 😁 love your work as always and learnt about top and bottom pull derailleurs. Something to look out for
Haha cheers mate ! Do you mean the riding videos or the bikepacking sucks series I did ? Glad you liked the video ! Thank you
@@garysprojects just riding around the city kinda thing. Always sick to see these bikes do a loop, and rides with mates etc
@@ARandomATube ahhh true the go pro vids , ya I never worked out how to make them interesting so they didn’t do as well , but maybe I’ll post some in the future! thx for the feedback !
@@garysprojects I always thought they were cool, but maybe it appeals to me more since it's my own city. 3rd person shit could be fun if you rig up a cam to a rear rack high enough
@@ARandomATube ya that would be cool ! GTA style 😆
In the first days Shimano only manufactured sprockets by stamping them out, later they were deep drawn to produce the Hyperglide profiles and also to strengthen the sprockets through the forging process, the older cranks still had the old distance, so they were mounted with washers to correct the position .
Ahhhhh I see !! Thank you so much for that info !
that pedros spring is siiick
Very useful! Cheers
Thanks for the extended cabling footage. I have a frame with identical stops that I am re-cabling later today. Perfect timing. Nice build.
Thank you my dude I’m glad to be of help ! Good luck with the bike, cheers !
Finally after 9999 years another vid ❤️
hahah hopefully the next one is sooner 🙏
Another top build - well done!
thank you Ken i appreciate that!
That’s a great looking build!!! 👍👍
thank you my dude i appreciate that!
This one is super sick. Love the Mountain components.
thank you my dude! yes i agree , the mountain lx is a nice group :)
impeccably demonstrated & explained ✨ meticulous man ! thanx
Thank you very much !! Haha do my best to explain. Cheers thanks for watching !
sick build Gary, nice work
Cheers mate I appreciate that !
After my saturday morning bike ride, a new bike build video! 😊 Very very nice old school/mid school build! Love the 26/24 mullet set up, i got also one bike in 26/24 set up, an Astrix Union... Too bad here in our place, its very hard to find a 24 tires and rims... Btw, that v-brake adaptor a hard to find here too, first time seeing that in your video. 😅 Anyways, very nice vid! Have a great day. 😎🚴
cheers mate i appreciate that! its hard to find 24 rims and tyres here too, not really a common size. the brake adaptors i got from ebay, maybe they send to your country! cheers !
Looks great - nice problem solving for the rear brake 41:35 - patience pays off👍
thank you very much ! hahah yes it too quite a bit of work but got there in the end, thank you!
Fantastic build my dude! Mullet bikes just look so cool. I recently converted a 26” fat bike over to a 24/26 mullet and was surprised at how “chuckable” it became on the trails. I think that you made a great choice with the wheels and you’ll love the feel of this bike after a few rides. Thanks for this video!
thank you my dude i appreciate that! ya the 24 wheel makes it so whippy , so fun! my kona bike has a 24 rear as well so was fun to try it on a rigid too - def keen to ride it bit more to get used to it. Cheers!
thanks Gary for another great bike build, great stuff
Thank you very much Reece i appreciate that ! 😊
Always enjoy your little rides at the end of your builds, Garry! The Bike looks sick ✌️
thank you Jon i appreciate that! always fun to test out a new build haha! cheers
Nice build. Looks very clean
Thank you very much Harry!
That groupset is 🔥
Clean build, man.
thank you my dude i appreciate that ! nice groupset for sure
Always informative 🎉
Thank you ! 😊
Those must be the first Mountain LX thumbshifters in history to have survived this long without the mounting pins shearing? A true unicorn! You might remember the hours I had to spend on mine in the recent Marin Palisades vid. Looking crispy as always my man.
hahah i gotta admit i check the mounting screw at the bottom to make sure they were secure when i got them, needless to say they needed a couple of turns. haha yes i remember you fixing yours! great job. Cheers my dude thanks for stopping by! :)
A labor of love❤
cheers my dude! worked out :D
@@garysprojects Cheboygan Michigan
Damn, Gary!!🔥🔥
Nice and rad. build.
Though initially the silver wheels would be best for this build, with all the silver components, but you nailed it with a mullet set up! 😎🤙
I never considered 24" before you droped this video.
And this frame probably had hydraulic Magura v-brakes, hence the hydraulic brake routing and the chain stay protector.
Hot, hot, hot. 🤩
thank you very much i appreciate that. haha yeah the silver wheels would have done the job nicely. fun to switch it up with the 24s ! youre right about the magura hyro brakes that is exactly what it was for - as i was told some bikes came stock with frame. cheers!
Love the build! But those low bars would have me tapping out in ten minutes 😂....i need some rise and sweep for my old azz.
hahahah yes sweeps would definitely help out the old back! cheers my dude !
cheers to you gary
Thank you mate 🙏
Upcycling at its best 👍
great to get this old frame running again!!
lookin good!
Cheers my dude !
my men, this´s very amazing !!!
thank you very much Martin!!
All set for another 30 years of service!
Hahaha yes built to last !
Shimano XT shifters and brake levers🤘🤘
yeeeeeee
A Shimano XT M770 and M772 groupset along with Thomson 7000 series aluminum Elite post and stem would look Great on this Giant🤘🤘. And the "wishbone" frame looks good too👍👍. My 2006/07 6061 aluminum Trek 4300 is one, and it has Shimano 739 XT V-brake levers, 760 XT V-brakes, M770 XT HallowTek 2 crank, a 750 XT front derailer, M770 XT 9spd rear derailer; and XT M772 Rap!d F!re Plus shifters🤘🤘
wow thats cool alll decked out, sounds like a cool bike. cheers!
@garysprojects All after purchase components/parts. I also put a
💰200.00+taxes and lab.🍁 7075-T6 aluminum Chris King headset on it😁👍👍. The owner of the shop (which closed in 2020) told me I could have gotten a better bike for less, but I did what I wanted ; a customization if you will. Enjoy your riding👍👍
Neat build bro
Thank you my dude 🙏
Beautiful build. Bringing the old ones back to life. Congrats, like it a lot.
thank you my dude i appreciate that. was great to get this old frame running again! cheers
Nice Bike 😊
Thank you very much 😊
I've never seen these V-brake adapters before; kinda cool🤘🤘. Hopefully, you went with the XT V-brake levers and 7spd. Rap!d F!re shifters 🤘🤘over those Shimano exage ones. "YEAH❗️"
cheers my dude, ya i think they are a newer thing. i ended up using the friction ones cheers
instead of the beer can use some lock tight unless its too far gone 🤣
Cheers mate ! A few people have mentioned that , will need to give it a try for the next one !
sick build, but i think you should do something with magura sticker like ad "not" to it or something
Thank you my dude ! Haha that would be funny
Man this makes we wanna buy this 80s Cannondale near me that was 24/26 from the factory. Guy wants $350 tho and it looks like a beater 😵💫 it’s pepto bismol pink tho 😩
Damn!! That sounds like a super cool bike 😭😭😭
@@garysprojects roller cam brakes and all that man. Think he’ll take a lowball? 😅 been up for 27 weeks 😂
Hahah only one way to find out
Maxwell Smart: "The old.....dead moth!".
Haha wow classic
the bike looks solid. like nokia solid.
Hahahahaha what a compliment! Also I played snake so much
Awesome ride! That ATX frame fits the dimensions well. Any plans to switch it up in the future with a moto bar setup?
thank you ! yes maybe switch it up in the future as the stem is a tad bit long, will see how i go. cheers!
Gary, have you ever done a 26” to 650b conversion? Would those adapters work? as opposed to spending big on Paul Motolites or similar… Sweet build once again ❤
I have never ! But I think they would work because they are designed to go up in size vs down, I’d just double check tyre/ wheel clearance. Cheers my dude I appreciate that !
Looks like the cable stops and Magura sticker indicate it originally had HS33 hydraulic rim brakes.
yes ! tim actually just told me that some of the bikes came fitted with maguras thats definitely the reason ! cheers
that is RAD WEIRDD!!
haha cheers my dude!
Still as good as a new bike
That’s right ! Ended up pretty light too
Oooh FUN! Mullets are so ugly and yet so cool.
Hahah that’s a nice way to put it 😆
You can't use V-brakes with an old 1989 cantilever brake lever, they take different cable pull. The levers will pretty much bottom-out the same time as the pads hit the rim.
I explain it in the video about the pull ratio , it works depending on that , for these specific levers it does
I’ve heard about also using blue loctite to fix a loose bottom cup caused by an ovaled head tube. Do you think a shim is moreso the way to go to fix this?
i think the shim will probably be a tighter fit, but i havent used the loctite method before so i dont know if its better or not ! cheers
Subbed.
cheers mate!
those brake levers will also let you run u-brakes which iirc only bmx levers will let you do now. By that same logic as well they should also work for disc brakes too right?
Mmm not sure it depends on the pull ratio of the disc brakes , road disc are short and mtb are long , it’s best to match the lever pull with caliper
I was working on a customers bike the other day, a Kona Lanai, it had a front 3x8 derailleur, a top pull shimano altus, the limit screws had to get spun out pretty far for the limits to work, is that normal for some older derailleurs? Just looked kind of .. weird to see 2 tall limit screws standing up from the derailleur
Mmm sometimes I guess it depends on how far the cranks are from the frame , usually they are about half way in.
@@garysprojects hmm, yeah they were about 85% out, I wonder if there was a wider, incorrect sized BB Installed at one point and pushed the chain line out... ..
@@_Zane__ ya that usually does it
One thing ive noticed is that over the decades the limit screw quality has gone down . Older 90s are good but newer limit screws on entry level MTB strip easily😢 aluminum?
ya seems like getting worse and worse for some reason, newer bolts must be of weaker material
Very nice rig! What are those V brake adapters? Could you tell the name and where to find them , Thank you!
Cheers mate ! I just got the adapters off eBay “mi xim” brand
@@garysprojectsI need them for my1995 Trek 7000 Alu frame. Thanks a lot!
7075 aluminum 🤘🤘
oh thats it ! good to know thanks
@@garysprojects Not your frame, the V-Brake adaptors; it says it right on them😁👍👍
@@glen3509 oh hahaha thank you!
@garysprojects The reason you don't see 7075 frames is because they can't be welded, the zinc is the reason. Now someone actually did make a 7075 aluminum frame, but it's held together with bolts and some sort of adhesive 👍👍
@@glen3509 wow that is crazy, thanks for sharing, very informative
That red tool at 20:30 is so sweet what brand is that
prestacycle torque wrench! available from www.beautbike.com.au/ cheers!
Measure twice, cut once
That’s right !
Thought id see you at the swap meet :)
my folks were down haha maybe the next one !
yerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
Thx u g 💕🙏
KORE, a good 🍁 company👍👍
they made some cool old school stuff!
Hi friend, what is the width of this Maxxis tire?
26 x 2.25 ✌️
Bet climbs good
It sure does !
Why 24 on the back ? Bigger wheels better ride
bigger wheels make for better rolling, smaller wheels are more nimble - fun to corner /accelerate etc
setting up a rear disc conversion would have been cheaper and easier... possibly not as good.. same name IG I've done two. one great one meh
Hahah true true , I’m a glutton for punishment 🤣🤣
those are some fat ass tyres
True that
give me my used goods as a beginner will be very happy
True that
mullet r gax
cheers !
ugly mtb type beat
Hahahah true
Cool combination of old school frame and parts with a modern look by the anthracite paintjob and mixed up silver and black parts🌟🌟🌟😎
cheers my dude, happy with how the colors turned out for the bike!
