It's not the time to dig them up. We don't need two and it would be far worse.
Future global FLU pandemic. It would be as useful against coronavirus as antibiotics would be. I knew I'd see the comment section filled with things like this. It's so stupid. I go to a video about the black plague, and it's full of comments about coronavirus. I go to a video about anything related to viruses or bacteria or parasites of any kind and you think your current concerns are just so relevant to it. Well you know what, the 1918 flu was MUCH worse than coronavirus anyway. We're talking 10% lethality instead of 1%. And yes coronavirus is more like 1% or less, because most of the cases aren't known about, there are many many people walking around with it who don't know they have it but all the cases of death by coronavirus are known about so that inflates the official lethality percentage. Also the % lethality is much higher in the first world like the US, UK and espeically Italy because it has so many old old people, while it's very low in places like Chile with much more primitive healthcare available, and why is that? Because by and large it's mostly only killing off people who would have been dead in 10 years anyway. History will show that you're all worked up about something that was never particularly powerful.
Im OLD im gonna die

“Stop a future pandemic” little late.
No, stupid, a FLU pandemic. Analysing it would be as useful against coronavirus as antibiotics would be. And it's not too late anyway. Do you actually think the puny coronavirus is the last pandemic the human race will ever face anyway? The most incidental one, maybe. Wait until you become acquainted with airborne rabies and superAIDS in a few years.

Too bad they can do shit about it, they can’t execute you because death is illegal.
I suppose that means it's illegal to be eaten by a polar bear, then.
why don't they just feed the dead body to polar bears. it's not like the dead can use it anymore :p
Syukri Lajin lmao that's an idea
Yes technically it is, if you get eaten by polar bears its your fault. A few people from the Czech republic was camping outside Longyearbyen and during night they got attacked by a polar bear and before they managed to shoot and kill the polar bear two of the campers got mauled but survived. Later the Czech were convicted and had to pay a fine, why? They failed to set up a tripwire around their camp which triggers a flare, they also didn't have anyone guarding the camp during night-time.
Syukri Lajin because you don't want the bears coming every now and then thinking that you will give them free food
also humans are not just sacks of meat
There would be no body so it should be fine. Not for your though, just everyone else...

in mine, too. Had mankind voted unanimously to cremate deceased people instead of burying them... well, we would probably make a big step towards environmentalism and civilization
The alcohol restrictions doesn't have anything to do with the guns, but with history.
Longyearbyen used to be a mining settlement. In order to prevent the workers from drinking too much (which is pretty easy during the depressing dark season and booze is relatively cheap due to lack of taxes), they enforced this limitation in the amount of beer and liquor one is allowed to buy. Strangely, the sale of wine is not limited. This is because it was too expensive for the miners and so only the rich mine owners drank wine. And they of course did not want any limitation on the amount of booze they're allowed to buy and drink.
That's really interesting! I wonder about something the video doesn't mention: How is their economy funded? It doesn't seem like there's very much there- I certainly wouldn't have expected a car dealership- and it's too isolated for much tourism. Is the town subsidized by the Norwegian government, like Pitcairn Island is by Britain? What kind of jobs are there? Now I'll be Googling all about Longyearbyen.
It was completely funded by itself. Today it is mostly funded by Norwegian government. Mines are closing and only scientists are working there today. Svalbard is a state of Norway (Sort of like a state in the USA). Svalbard have their own government and laws and their own Governor (Sysselmann) under Norwegian Law. Laws are very different in Svalbard than it is in Norway, and anyone can go to work at Svalbard without a Visa. There is no taxes like there is i Norway. You are forced to have a rifle if you want to travel outside Longyearbyen. The name Longyearbyen is a mix of English and Norwegian. Byen means The city, so the name is The Long Year City, because most of the time it is night time in Longyearbyen so the year is very long.
Thank you! I also read that the average residency in Longyearbyen is about seven years, and there aren't very many lifelong residents. Families generally move away when their children have finished compulsory school at 16 or 17.
Norway doesn't have states (it's not a federation), it's more like a county (fylke). However, back in the day when Norway claimed it, Russia also really wanted it, so Britain mediated. The result was the Svalbard Agreement, which states that any country that has signed the agreement can put economic ventures on the island, and fish in its seas, but it's considered a part of Norway, and the Norwegian police and coast guard have authority there.
Even today there's a Russian town there, called Barentsburg, with a coal mine and some minor tourism and local school and stuff. It's not actually profitable though (same with Longyearbyen), both countries support their respective settlements to maintain their rights.
Anyway, this makes it kind of a unique part of Norway, which means that unlike the other counties on the mainland, it's "county manager" (Fylkesmann) has a special title (Sysselmann) and some extra powers, like controlling the police and overseeing the local judicial court.
Surprised no one has mentioned Pyramiden, an abandoned Russian coal-mining settlement on Svalbard. A statue of Lenin (also the world's most northerly) still stands there today.
