German: Breaking out of prison is legal
LPL: Hello this is LockPickingLawyer and today we’re going to break out a prison
Got a click on one, number 2 is binding, nothing on 3, 10 is binding
*goes to germany*
*commits minor crime *
*sentenced for 2 weeks*
CHALLAENGE START
CHALLENGE END
If you break out, the police will still chase you down and make you serve the rest of your time.
There's this tiny problem, that a two weeks sentence wouldn't be executed. Normally, if your sentence is six months or less, you will be free to leave until you commit another crime or don't act according to your restrictions anymore. You would also need more than a minor crime, as you will only get fined for those and a prison sentence below one month is basically illegal, leaving you with something like murder, rape, treason or at least counterfeiting, if you really want a visit to our prisons (which are quite luxurious compared to other countries though).
But if you think that's worth it, keep us briefed please. I'm curious how you do!
2 weeks is really rare. Rather you have to work somewhere
Also, if you take your prison clothes with you, it will still be theft.
And being naked outside as a man is also illegal, so you couldn't commit a crime on your escape when you are male.
Except if you have clothes hidden outside the prison before you go there
Little fun fact if you escape from a German prison in a Group, that's a crime because you helped someone else escape.
Haha makes sense tbh :)
And taking prison clothes with you is a crime too because you stole them
@@Max_G4omg you a Genius haha. So firsy if i Come to prison here, I need to take of All my clothes lol
@@vik4130 Nah, you can't. Maybe you can hide some clothes somewhere at a safe place near the prison :)

The actual crazy thing is that additionally prisoners can earn "out-off-prison" time by being a model prisoner in Germany, meaning that they can, for example spend their weekends with their family outside the prison and even have the keys to their own cells. Still almost none off them escape and they have significantly higher chances of rehabilitation.
because even within prison they have something to lose in their relation with that prison and society overall, they do not have to carve out a parallel existence inside a parallel society. You gain privileges for being a model prisoner, you lose those privileges if you break the rules.
Yes and no.
Yes, if you are doing good in prison AND are in for the less nasty stuff.
No, if you are a total pos, aka for example: did "something" to kids.
The worst scum stays in prison, the absolute worst can even be in for actual life (if it turns out a Judge is convinced you will do THAT shit again).
But yes, most criminals can get out earlier, and some even partially (like on weekends). The later is usually for non-violent crimes.
The idea is indeed to make sure inmates can turn their lifes around, if they actually want to.
The thing we do here in germany is >>>punish>revenge

"Seeking freedom"
"Well, carry on... I guess"
"Have you found it?"
"No yet. But I've checked everywhere around here, so it's probably somewhere behind this wall. Mind giving me a boost?"
Now that raises a question. They got the right to stop you, obviously. But can they prevent you from escaping by shooting you? In many countries they can shoot you if you try to escape the prison as it is a crime and they are simply preventing crime by appropriate force. But in this case you are not commiting any crime, they are just making sure that you get punished for a crime you have already commited. I don't think it is appropriate to shoot someone just to make sure he spends month in jail for unpaid parking tickets... so how does it work exactly?
@@davidkrcil9326 Well, they don't shoot you because shooting you wouldn't be part of your assigned punishment. They'd pursue you at minimal collateral risk and wait until they can safely apprehend you without causing undue personal harm or property damage.
We've noticed in Australia that during high speed pursuits, if the pursuit vehicle travels at a safer pace, so does the criminal. It stops being about getting away because you're no longer being chased, just followed. That's not to say the criminal won't speed up when it's safe for them to do so, but because they aren't feeling as pressured to escape pursuit, they drive more safely overall and pose less risk to the public as a result.
Most pursuits end successfully after the criminal leaves their vehicle and is tracked down on foot.
I think the interesting thing is that most criminals do not want to cause further damage, so they'll proceed as carefully as they can afford to.
@@davidkrcil9326 they will pursue you and won't shoot unless obviously you commits more crimes. If you get away and they don't notice until its too late, you are free or if you manage to lose them while escaping you too are free.
@@truthbetold9505 So what kind of force they can apply exactly? But if they just ask nicely I will politely refuse to go back to jail. They can't just wait for criminal to climb over the wall, get his prepared vehicle and just get lost. He may be a risk for society, he may go and kill someone (I mean not the guy with unpaid parking tickets). Let's say you have a mass murderer that is known to enjoy murdering people and you are pretty much sure that the moment you let him leave the complex he will try to murder someone... so you just wait for him to commit said crime even though you know he is in prison for constantly murdering people? I know this is argumentum ad absurdum but still. You cannot let people escape and hope to catch them. So there must be some force that guard can apply.

Who taught u english
@@balazs1456 Thats the trick, its impossible to take them(which is the goal obviously),but your freedom is still unrestricted
@balazs
well, it makes sense from the perspective of the law.
In court, every thing must be proven. So, if they find you with drugs in your pocket, they can charge you with posession, but if they find you with those drugs allready in your system, they can't charge you with drug use, because that's not a crime, and neither can they charge you with posession, because they can't prove that you ever owned them.
Having the drugs in your system is not sufficient prove that you owned them, as for all we know, you could have ben forced to take them, something that actually does happen.

A few years ago in Kenya there was a big earthquake which brought down a prison wall. Loads of people escaped, but some of them came back having only left long enough to check their families were ok....
I nearly spat out my drink when he roasted wendover productions
It is not as spectacular as it sounds. In Austria and in Germany you will usually, provided you behave normally in prison, not spend your whole sentence but get out of prison early. But once you would escape (which is usually not that hard as you will have the chance to go out of prison on some days unless you are consindered a real danger to the public, for instance for personal reasons such as to attend a funeral, or even as some kind of "holliday from prison") you will loose that. So you if your sentence is 12 years, maybe you will go out on parole after lets say 8 years if you behave well. But if you run off, you will get caught (the chance to really escape is almost nonexistent) and you will then have to serve all the 12 years, without any of chance of holliday and so on. So in reality, amost nobody runs away as it is simply not worth it.
The fact that you're allowed to go out for stuff like that to begin with is pretty great, though. In US prison, you can't leave for funerals and the such at all. And on top of that, you get punished for escaping. No matter what you do, if you're in a German prison, you have it a lot better.
@@Oh_God_not_him_again but why go to prison to begin with?
Also you vould not be following ze rules, nein !!
B O E it’s probably for non violent criminals! And I think that it may help make rehabilitation easier because they are not isolated from their family and they may be more motivated to behave well in prison and learn from their mistakes. Just a thought i’m am not an expert by any means.
@@amberblack9587 It's for almost anyone who didn't commit extremely violent crimes (or is seriously mentally unstable, but that's a totally different topic). The underlying thought is, that nothing could ever deny you your life and human dignity, which means that you would need to be expected to harm someone else again in these regards in order to justify a sentence that is potentially harming you. It's also cheaper to just have them pay their prison time back in taxes later, not to make them even more filled with bitterness and not to disconnect them totally from the outside world. But you're right about the good behaviour in prison. Inmates are allowed to use knifes in jail and move rather freely inside the prisons as well as outside, from time to time, and yet the prisons are pretty safe. You always have much to lose when trying something stupid and that keeps you in line as no amount of prison guards could. I honestly like the concept a lot.
I was on remand when I was a teenager, was in there 30 months and got found not guilty in the end. Went from being treated as a very dangerous criminal to just being a regular free civilian without any transition between the two. It felt so weird and still does in some ways
Smooooth ad transition. Almost didn't notice it

You're amazing Wendover!
For the people who think Linus is best at giving segway to sponsors,
HAI is the real champ.
This video is really clever and well written, subbing forever. The animations/editing are decent aswell
A double upload notification from *Half as Interesting* and *Real Life Lore* at the same time
Perfect!
I'm told my videos are interesting as well :)
That Air Canada flight though ;)
The netherlands doesnt have a law against breaking out of prison, so therefore you cannot be punished for breaking out of prison
That was a sick Segway from the video to the sponsorship
I liked the smooth transition from actual content to commercial at the end.
I'm not unsubbing forever. This is an awesome channel. I also got me an edumacation.

I have no idea how he added humor, a sponsor, and the actual video all together into 4:39 minutes
I swear you still have THE best ad transitions ever.

0:53 a whole video needs to be made on this. its crazy that some chinese can actually use another person of them fascing the consequence to there actions
Yeah! The fact that he glossed-over that was ridiculous. I wanna know how to make someone else serve my sentence!
Well, actually not. Or more like, not usually the case. But there are a few very old (20+ years old) cases that the police and/or the judge made mistake and sent someone innocent to the jail. I hope not but if you are stereotyping Chinese based on mistakes made by very few people, just don't.
REAL LIFE and HALF INTERESTING BOTH ARE AWESOME
Fun little side note: The sign under the barbed wire at 1:27 says "Caution in wet conditions" lest you slip and hurt yourself with the barbs while fleeing...
