4 Breathing exercises for smooth freestyle swimming. Progressions. Beginners

  • On this video I will show you 4 breathing exercises you can do to maintain a better, more horizontal position while swimming smooth easy freestyle.
    The first exercise is to Grab the wall with one hand, take a deep breath, put your face in the water and kick just enough to put your body in a horizontal position.
    Practice this exercise on both sides, breathing to the left and breathing to the right, until you feel comfortable with the movement and the breathing technique.
    The second progression is very similar but you will have a kick board instead of the wall and you will also do full strokes. Kick about 6 times and then take one breath and a stroke.
    The third exercise is the same as the second but without a kick board. Usually swimmers have a preferred breathing side but it is of good practice to learn how to breathe well from both sides.
    The fourth exercise is simpler. Just kick with your arms down and move your head to the side to take a breath. There is no arms’ movement. Focus on maintaining the hips high on the surface of the water and take quick breaths the same way you practice on the other three exercises.
    Now you are ready to do the whole thing! Swim one length of the pool on the smoothest freestyle you can master, while taking short quick breaths. Try breathing every 2 stroke, every 3 stroke and every 4 strokes. Notice the difference. Stop at the other end, control your breathing and do it again.

    Just a small note: If you keep on swimming regularly ( let's say at least 3-4 times a week ), your breathing will optimize itself naturally. Without realizing you'll start exhaling just before putting your head above the surface and you will only exhale as much as necessary. No worries if things don't work out directly.

      Yeah. Another small note. If you do anything you're not used to for like a hundred hours, that thing is going to feel a lot more natural than it did before that effort ;)
      I've been struggeling with this and more of the basics for just 3 weeks, 2-3 times a week and man is it hard. Even if I got the first two exercises down, I sink like a rock if I rotate to the side and lift one arm out of the water.

      I hope you have seen some good improvements! I am 100% self-taught, I rely heavily on video content to learn what I should be doing. I have seen a lot of improvement from just experimenting and testing what feels right, and was finally able to swim a mile in under an hour this week. Not exactly a speedy accomplishment, but it meant a lot to me :)

    Honestly, i was quite sceptical about only begging to breath out through my nose when my head is coming up for air.

  • @I.Geek.Psychology
    @I.Geek.Psychology Před 6 lety +13

    WOW, I have been watching a lot of swimming videos and see everybody has own techniques. Most people say start exhaling as soon as your head goes under water and keep it until you inhale again so that you don't accumulate CO2 in your lungs. What Skill NT says is totally opposite, but I am willing to try it. I guess the key is to figure it out with lots and lots of practice.

    how does one know how many percent of air from the lung he exhales

    • @DOSEDcoUK
      @DOSEDcoUK Před 6 lety +10

      well you can gauge an estimate? just thinking on my feet here, if you get a long balloon used for making balloon animals etc, you could get a pretty good idea how big it gets from a full lung exhalation, then half of that is near enough 50% lung capacity, half *that* is 25 and so that's a decent guide.
      or, in a slow, controlled full breath in and out, time it several times until each breath in or out is taking just about the same time from empty to full or vice versa (lets say 5 secs), and then divide that time into tenths or whatever, and there you can count each 10%, and get a feel for what 10% or 20% or 50% etc really feels like. so if you can time from empty lungs to full lungs as 5 seconds of smooth flow, each second is another 20% lung capacity. then if you try to just limit it to lose that final 30% that way, you'll know how it feels in your body to withhold the final 30% or so (although when practising this kinda stuff be careful to have breaks with full breathing so you don't get dizzy!)

      siraj mohiuddin hey! So I actually ended up becoming a lifeguard/swim instructor and since my stroke was weak, everyday since I worked at the pool I would get in and practice swimming my freestyle and my technique only became better and better. Some things I would do is use a kick board and put some fins on my feet to strengthen my kick because that is what propels you through the water. Then I would use a bouie that goes between your legs and I would slowly swim only using my arms focusing on keeping my elbows high and my arms in a “11” position (which means not crossing over your shoulders) while focusing on breathing every third stroke. Using paddles help tremendously with this drill as you can move slower and really focus on what your arms are doing. If you do struggle with breathing every 3rd stroke you can breath on the second stroke and slowly progress. Once you start getting all the parts in motion and you are comfortable I would swim with, for example, a hoodie and sweatpants on to cause drag, this will help you get stronger and faster with your front crawl stroke!

    I'm currently taking my swimming lessons, and I have to admit I drink alot of sea water every time I try to breathe like that,😭😅. I can trade water, float on my back this particular breathing technique is soo hard!

    I was quite surprised to hear that I should hold my breath in the beginning and then breathe out just in those few seconds before I breathe in again. I tried, and it worked, but only with hard concentration. Cause before watching your video I was always told to exhale constantly under water in order to avoid anxiety. Could you explain exactly the difference (Holding or not holding your breath at the beginning)? And could you tell me why it makes a difference, if you exhale through your nose? And what was the other video you talked about?
    Me gustan tus videos. Son muy divertidos y me ayudan tanto!!!!

      Same opinion and question from my side also? I too learnt that one should start exhaling just before entering in d water and exhale completely, then turn your head to inhale

    Struggle alot to breathe correctly When you exhale under water...always keep the breath rather than exhale..watched few diff videos with diff suggestions given. Do you actually open your mouth abit to exhale or just blow out...fearful of taking in water then by that way but really dont know. I can swim but only with head above...really want to get this. Thanks

    Skills Nt exellent video, one quick question: In a 50m-100m freestyle competition do I have to breathe every 3 or 2 strokes?

    • @SkillsNT
      @SkillsNT  Před 6 lety +4

      +Emi Ramirez in the 50 I suggest breathing the least amount of times possible. In the 100 just get into a rhythm that is comfortable for you and that is faster for you. For example if I start breathing every 2 my arms spin faster but I don't catch as much water so I'm actually slower. Some people are faster breathing every 2. So you need to figure that for yourself

    • @pakman77
      @pakman77 Před 6 lety

      Exactly as Skills NT said. I suggest you try to keep it as low as possible. For example, in my case, in 50m I would only catch air a couple of times to the wall (25) and make máximum use of momentum -I'd catch air especially before the flip turn. In 100m sprint, I'd breathe every 6 strokes at first, and try to keep it every 4 strokes as much as possible.

    I used to exhale on the bottom which was very hard since the pressure of the water is more than the air pressure in my nose. Its much easier since the pressure of water is less at near the surface
