    Sharon Salzberg is so wonderful in her message that no negative comment from people not yet calm, matured, focused, intelligent or connected enough can do any real harm. Such words simply demonstrate how far the person has to journey toward self-knowledge and happiness.

    July 3, 2018. I am watching this as I prepare to apply mindfulness training in a presentation about celebrating and cultivating kindness. The bold questioning of Sharon's credibility in light of her weight gives me pause. We can acknowledge someone's physical appearance without judging them or ourselves. Sight, sound, touch; feelings, thoughts, questions. They all register. It's true. The first time I saw an image of Sharon, I was surprised. The first time I saw an image of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, I was surprised. I acknowledged my surprised, and I hoped they were OK. I applauded their courage, their conviction that they had something beautiful and important to share with the world--their love, their gifts, their being. I received them gladly. To see them was freeing, really. Whatever my condition, my issues, show up for the journey. No excuses. Share. Surprise. Surrender. Leave the critics to wrestle with their own demons, if they dare. My life is better for having been in contact with their beautiful spirits and peaceful presence. To see Iz smile, to hear him sing "Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "What a Beautiful World," or his song, "Kaleohan," moves me deeply. I look forward to learning and absorbing more of what Sharon Salzberg offers us, unconditionally. Love trumps fear. Kindness counts. As Sharon is, and Iz continues to be though he died young, "Be the light. Be the blessing." Choose kindness, mindful kindness. Namaste.

      I hate to burst your bubble. Vipassana is all about going inwards and seeing the process's that make up "you". This isn't about people being mean, its people being concerned. Sharon is considered a meditation master and leader in this area of expertise. Vipassana shows you lots from sensations in the body, emotions, impulse control etc. Its helped me tremendously with creating a healthy lifestyle, part of that has been better eating habbits. When a leader is vastly over weight, we have to wonder what her practice has shown her. This isnt being judgmental. Im curious. Just as curious as when I explore anything inside myself. How can someone be such a figure yet clearly show a lack of self control with how much/what food you eat? Her colleagues Jack Kornfeild and Joseph Goldstein seem to be generally healthy. No one is gonna have a perfect body of course, but they aren't going to look over weight to obese either.
      Why do you have a problem with this question?

    Sharon Salzberg quote highlights from this video: “I think of happiness as a kind of tremendous inner resource that gives us an ability to care about others as well as ourselves, that gives us an ability to have energy in our work, that really can be a powerful force for good in this world.”
    “Our attention is nearly continually distracted by the thoughts and the feelings that make up stories.”
    “The mind thinks thoughts that we don't plan.”
    “When conditions come together for something to arise, it will arise.”
    “When we miss the present moment, we miss the happiness that's always available to us.”
    “The difference between misery and happiness is what we do with our attention.”
    “Meditation is actually a training in attention. We learn to stabilize our attention, open our attention, and refine our attention so that we can be more aware-not only of our inner landscape, but also of what's happening around us. It teaches us to notice our experience and our responses to those experiences without immediately judging what we see.”
    “No allegiance to a belief system is needed.”
    “I found out how incredibly transforming it was to anchor my attention in the moment-to the simple act of inhaling and exhaling.”

    I've been meditating and around meditators for over 20 years. Some meditators lose the strong identification with the body so they simply aren't motivated to lose weight or in some cases take care of the body in a certain way. if you don't have the same idea ingrained in most of us that being fat devalues you as a person you may have no strong motivation to do the work to lose weight, which actually is one of the most difficult things to do -just look at the statistics - if it were easy then nobody would be fat.
    Chogyam Trungpa was an amazing teacher with profound insights and yet he died at 47 from cirrhosis of the liver caused by alcoholism. So people with profound wisdom can also be flawed but it doesn't dimish the value of what they have to offer.

    • @funhole26
      @funhole26 Před 4 lety

      I think the issue is she talks about self love but clearly has no impulse control with food or kinds of food. Oshu had some wisdom but he also took complete advantage of people. Trungpa was a well known alcaholic, yet had some wisdom. I just have trouble wrapping my head around someone who is considered a master and leader clearly display inadequate development with impulse control when thats just as important as emotions, sensations in the body etc. Vipassana teaches you to go inwards and get curious. Is it right to make up excuses for someone because many others have fallen short in the same way? I lost 35 pounds after getting into vipassana. By no means do I have a 6 pack or even look fit. It showed me to eat when i needed to. It was evident when I was lost in thoughts or emotions or somthing and eating mindlessly. I'm no leader in this area by any means. Why are people making excuses for her lack of developmemt? Everyone has stuff to work on. I just assume "masters" of self love are held in a higher category though.

    Catarina Wikström It's a purely practical issue. The body and mind cannot be considered as separate in this life. While it is true that you don't need a healthy body to meditate effectively, it can help a lot. A healthy body can help with hormonal and biochemical imbalances that can affect your internal well-being a great deal, and also provide the energy to make the most of your meditation. A lot of people's minds are so wild that they need physical exercise as a foundation to get started with mindfulness practice.

    All of you people who are so judgmental about weight need to consider (1) that weight gain is often caused by medical conditions, and no responsible teacher claims that meditation resolves all medical conditions, and (2) how you would feel if we exploited some condition beyond your control in a public forum, then judged your ability to do your job based on that irrelevant condition, and (3) I promise you are far from perfect yourself or you wouldn't be filled with so much judgment. You may want to consider what you are hiding from yourself by preoccupying yourself with judgment about others.

      +Bishop Craig Bergland -- In many cases it's not judgementalism, but care and concern. We probably all know people who became very chunky and sickly after committing to a grain-based diet vegetarian diet. To ruin your health because you think you're being spiritual may require intervention from your friends so that you can live a long and fruitful life.

    • @cbergland
      @cbergland Před 7 lety +1

      I believe the tone of most of the criticisms reveal their motivation. I don't believe speculation about possible causes is productive, as there are many - including, possibly, steroid therapy for any number of conditions that tends to cause a rounding of the face, weight gain, and increased blood sugar levels.

    • @cbergland
      @cbergland Před 7 lety +5

      George, it's fine that you find it difficult to pay attention to her because of her weight. I find it hard to pay attention to you because you make ignorant claims about the causes of weight gain and are rather shallow, but I wouldn't make those criticisms of you in a public forum except to make the point that we don't have to share every little thought that crosses our minds when the result might be hurtful. Mindfulness is one of the things that helps us develop that skill. Rejecting teachers because of their appearance or qualities of their voice are barriers to developing mindfulness.

I would be ashamed myself to promote wellness with a body like I used to have! I am 47 now and there is also natural healing not for the weight but for all the illnesses we put outselves into. OUR ILLNESSES AND APPEARANCE IS OUR OWN DECISION. Hubby, son and I made a commitment to be healthy and with that our appearance also changed drastically in a very short time. Feel free to check our healing process of a year on Instagram nature_is_free and it was not only me, it was my husband and son from different nationalities, structures and backgrounds. I'm not trying to diminish the value of her insights by bringing up her weight. I've struggled, and still struggle, with my weight to this day. I'm just curious why mindfulness hasn't brought her overall health in body and mind? When you put yourself out there as a teacher of mindfulness to the public I think that's a fair question. She should write a book on her struggles. I'd love to read about how she's still struggling or has come to peace with her weight. To me it's not dissimilar to someone advocating healthy eating/living but being overweight. I think it's natural to wonder why it's not working for the spokesperson. Because if its not working for them you wonder if its going to ever work for you.

      This kind of thinking is an example of our ego judging someone else and coming to a conclusion about them with no basis of fact. If you listen with your heart, instead of your mind, you'll hear the message.

    I have a question. Why when we listen to people such as yourself talk about meditation it seems to be "The breath, the breath, the breath, the breath, the breath.............
    Oh and "mindfulness"
    There are countless different types of meditation. ( many of which I personally find much more appealing ) and yet when one goes online or reads about meditation its the same old ( boring ) pot being stirred around again and again and again.
    There is a vast wonderland of variety in meditation practices and people just seem to often stay in the same old boring pot.
    As for me, my suggestion is to GO OUT! EXPLORE! FIND THE MANY INTERESTING
    OPTIONS OUT THERE. STOP STIRRING AROUND THE SAME OLD POT!!
    ( now not tha the "pot" doesnt have its value ) but make life interesting see what else is out there!!!!!

    Asking an honest question isn't being judgmental. I have the same question several people asked below. Is there a relationship between mediation and physical health and in this case, a relationship with extreme obesity? I am a big fan of the Dalai Lama and I know he is a pretty chubby so I am not expecting that a spiritual or meditation leader ought to be physically perfect but it is reasonable to expect reasonable healthy habits. I am not suggesting that a transformed mind should lead to high levels of fitness, but Ms. Salzberg appears to have a serious mind problem in similar ways as people who have other serious substance addictions. Unfortunately, unlike many she wears her serious mind problem publicly, but that doesn't change the fact that what she is preaching doesn't seem to have a positive impact on this very important area of her life. Sure, she might be a teacher vs. a doer, but I have read one of her books and listened to several talks and she does makes claims about being a serious life long practitioner.

    MRI data may link meditation to physiological brain age. But I wanna see pragmatic effectiveness, let's say, 1h of meditation translates into 20 % no-stress productivity increase among professionals.
    No one can tell how she would look like (considering her initial conditions) w/out meditation, but her public appearance undermines lay people trust, just as fitness freaks, who literally live in gyms, endorsing pointless supplements &being paid by the manufacturers.

    I'm sure everyone will find my question offensive but, how can someone who is clearly over weight be called a meditation master? Vipassana is supposed to make you aware of everything, including impulses. If your over weight wouldnt that suggest you havent gained much awareness over how much/types of food you eat? No one says she should have a 6pack, but being over weight to obese is different than a functional or healthy weight. Its steep when your considered a meditation master/leader.
