  • Director of Translational Neuroscience, Contemplative Studies Initiative Assistant Professor (Research), Department of Family Medicine. Why does mindfulness meditation begin by focusing on the breath? Does mindfulness-based somatic awareness (cultivated through attention to breath, body sensations) change the brain? Catherine Kerr received a B.A. from Amherst College, and a Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins University. Before arriving at Brown, she was at Harvard Medical School where her original focus was on developing innovative approaches for investigating placebo effects. Currently, her work focuses on using Magnetoencephalography (MEG) and other tools to investigate brain mechanisms underlying body-based attention and healing in mindfulness and other mind-body practices such as Tai Chi.
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    As a long time meditation lover, nurse, Kabat- Zinn admirer, I just want to tell you how cool and smart your presentation is. I watched it a couple of years ago and it popped up today on my Utube stream and meant even more today. Thank you for your work. You are awesome!

    Immensely important for me. I have a degree in History and I'm currently a student of Cultural Anthropology in Venice. This stuff about rediscovering old texts and finding their scientific value with today's instruments is awesome for me. It's great to see that somwhere else in the world someone is going in this direction too, and in such some interesting topics! Thank you Catherine Kerr and your team for your immense contribution! Let us know further developments of the Contemplative Studies Initiative and these studies!

    This is important and inspiring. There is real "translation" happening, from neuroscience to everyday life. I am puzzled about comments that critique the presentation. My suggestion: don't look at the video, just /listen/ to it. I think you'll find it beautifully coherent.

    Thank you. I have meditated with zen and mindfulness techniques for endless years with moderate to little results and struggled horribly to get anywhere. It wasn't until I discovered something called the Gurdjieff Work and S.N. Goenka's articulation of meditation that I consistently felt that I was on to something. Sensation is fundamental. The breath is simply a point of focus to return to. Observing my mind only had me more in my head. Counting was a nice trick but stopped working early on.

    Good to see that the medical establishment is finally starting to recognise the benefits of hypnosis and self - hypnosis when used for for health promoting reasons rather than stupid stage shows. They still have a way to go but it is gradually scientifically validating much of clinical hypnosis.

    This is what the Feldenkrais Method® does with "resetting baseline" in attending to sensory changes, using the skeletal system as a clear and consistent marker for mapping the a self-image for movement and ease. In my classes, I often talk about turning the throttle down-- which often results in resetting the entire system. I would love to see more of your research!

      ***** Humanity

    • @CommonUnity
      @CommonUnity Před 9 lety

      ***** Beautiful.
      See, people like you give me faith in humanity.
      We're all a bunch of brilliant, unique, confused, fragile beings roaming around this football wondering why....? that sometimes we forget to cry, or how to cry. Slowly yet surely evolving into emotionless robots, a result of our living lie. "Don't cry! You're a big boy now. Don't cry! Just curtsey and bow. Don't cry! Because Simon Says not to. Don't cry! Find something else to do!" -a father to his son
      I'm assuming you're a woman, considering men don't use that many smileys. But why not? Smileys show expression. Fun, happy, sad, angry, cool expressions!
      I guess my point is, men are just as fragile and shy as females, yet we are portrayed to be fierce, masculine, hulky beasts roaming around this planet programmed to serve and protect the country, families and society as a whole. Sometimes we just wanna cry. One day, we'll die for it (eg: school massacres by teen boys, higher male suicide rate than female, suicide bombers are men/boys, etc)
      Perhaps your father was a victim of such stereotype? :(
      (i'm sorry for your loss)
      if i may have offended you in any way, i am terribly sorry. It's just this convo got me thinking.... and I did shed a couple of tears as well :)

    Extremely worthwhile info, tho presented in ... an inexpert manner. Dr. Kerr presents research findings showing that meditation strengthens ability to concentrate, emotional flexibility, and other traits. I think you will find this talk of value If you can overlook her delivery full of "Um.. OK... Guys OK ... Alright... unclear-pronoun unclear-pronoun." If you cannot overlook her delivery style, there are many more polished talks on meditation. If YOU plan to teach or lecture, watching this talk can help you see how a teacher's off-the-cuff delivery lessens the clarity of very worthwhile info.
    NOTE TO ALL OF US. Television, the net, the churches, and government offices are of full of stunningly glib, beautiful people with presentation skills that dazzle and info that makes people dumber. We should applaud Dr. Kerr in this: she is working to make us smarter. She's on our side.

    I tried to pay close attention to what she was saying. Absolutely no teaching method present there !
    She lost me for 20 seconds; My mind couldn't take in all those complex terms that she was using.
    As Einstein put it : if you can't explain it simple enough, you didn't fully understand it.
    It is clear that she isn't a good ambasador for science (like Neil De Grasse is..)

      There are things, that cannot be explained so that everybody gets it the first time. Sometimes it needs time, and if you´re really interested go to a mindfulness course, or start doing some kinda formal meditation practice. (I love Einstein, but all the slogans of wise men shouldn´t be taken too literally.)

    • @faramund9865
      @faramund9865 Před 6 lety

      I've just read this article where she is interviewed. It's quite clear to me that she understands very well how science is supposed to be handled. And she doesn't like it when science is misrepresented. Especially by overly positive articles that make false claims. So perhaps instead of wanting her to explain it more simply, we should put effort in learning the terms she is putting forth.
      Because these "complex" terms usually make it more easy to communicate. Because they can encapsulate a whole bunch of words in just one word. It's the reason why we make up words for things, so we don't have to explain the whole theory behind it every time.
      In that way words are a bit like functions in programming.
