    First and foremost, I'm a fisherman. Very avid, too.
    I believe all living things have senses, but more importantly, all species deserve respect. I've dispatched animals in many different forms, however, trying to give them respect and attempt to dispatch your catch as quickly as possible would be the right thing to do. For taste and or otherwise.
    Don't kill it if you're not gonna eat/use it.
    We're all placed on this earth to coexist. Respect each other.

      f33rnofish I'm no snow flake 😂, but I agree with you 100% . Regardless of what it is , kill it humanely. My personal belief is that god put animals on this earth for us to harvest, and to do it humanely and with respect. If your going to kill something eat it. No if ands or buts about it. No need to kill something for the "fun" of it. Glad Someone else finally feels the way I do. Take it easy brotha.

Seriously people that kill animals or fish needlessly like not eating or using it some meaningful form pisses off your outdoors-man more than your typical PETA activists.

    thanks for this video man.. I know exactly the video you are referring that created the outrage, I was one of the disturbed commenters. obviously the handling of the mullet in that video was a little cruel (fillet alive), but I'm not going to beat a dead horse on that, to be fair I don't think I've ever seen you do anything like that in any of your other videos. so I can appreciate that you took the time to make this video. 1) it shows you read the comments and care, and 2) it also shows that there is a humane and responsible way to put down an animal, even if your intent is to make it your meal.... I know we live in a harsh world, but I believe there is room for just a little empathy and human decency.

    • @zoffinger
      @zoffinger  Před 7 lety +6

      I do read the comments. And I have learned a lot from them. Even before that video. I'm also a fan of reading folks like Hemingway. His characters always seemed to have sympathy for the creatures they hunted and killed. Though a harsh, rough man, he also came across compassionate. That's a good way to live life in my opinion, though, these same animals we are humane towards, seldom show any respect for their kill (shrugs) Perhaps, that's what separates us? Perhaps that's what makes us weak? Hard to say for sure. But discussion is definitely a good thing. Thanks for voicing your opinion.

    Fish have very rudimentary brains, far from being sentient. They don't process pain or suffering in a subjective conscious way; they are just responding to stimulus. You cannot empathize with a fish's experience. I would suggest you save your compassion for whales, apes, pigs, etc. that may have capacities for intrinsic value.

    • @JonS11111
      @JonS11111 Před 7 lety +25

      Yes, imagine having your consciousness completely shut off, with all of the parts of your brain that make you associate you as yourself removed. If your body was then tortured, even though your brain is still receiving the messages, there would be no 'you' to experience the pain. The parts of the brain that make pain bad are parts we do not share with fish. It would be like torturing a tree, or non-conscious robot.
      Please note my arguments here are specifically for fish.

    There are a lot of misconceptions about sentience and emotions. I'm sure a lot of people will not want to believe me on what I'm about to say. All animals with central nervous systems are in fact sentient. Contrary to popular belief, sentience does not mean having a humanoid brain capable of doing calculus. All animals, from your pet goldfish, to humans, are sentient. They also do have emotions. Emotions are an inherent, emergent property of multicellular organisms with nervous systems. They are what let you process environmental stimuli and react accordingly. I think a lot of people have this romanticism about what emotions are. Obviously a fish doesn't have as complex thoughts or cognitive processing as a dog. Nor does a dog as a human. But basic emotions and sensations such as fear and stress are FUNDAMENTAL for the existence of organisms like fish and us. There are in fact numerous studies and field observations that prove animals such as fish have basic emotions. The majority of animals have the same neurotransmitters and types of receptors as we do. Whether or not fish feel pain is ambiguous. One new study from J D Rose, R Arlinghaus, et al., proposes that fish do not really feel pain the way we do. However, it's my own opinion that based on all the available information, it's still uncertain. A summary of the paper can be found here: www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/08/130808123719.htm
    I write this not to tell you how to live your life or as an ethical argument, I am merely sharing information .

      Wtf is a fish hugger? Never in my life have I met what all you neckbeards are bitching about in the comments. All I know are fishermen who give a fuck and fishermen who dont. One slices up a fish alive, the other takes 5 seconds to end its life before hand. Never met someone who literally freaks out over how they are being treated.
      The last video was a little fucky watching the guy fillet the fish alive.
      Im on the less psychotic side of making sure what I kill and eat doesnt need to suffer any more than absolutely necessary. If that makes me a 'fish hugger' than Im glad to not have any psychological deficiencies. You should just call 'fish huggers' humanists.

      The following methods are not suitable for killing fish as they do not result in a rapid or humane death: chilling with ice in holding water, carbon dioxide in holding water; chilling with ice and carbon dioxide in holding water; salt or ammonia baths; asphyxiation by removal from water; bleeding out without stunning.

    I usually fish only when I catch and keep, I usually use a pair of needle-nose pliers and snap the neck by swinging them down they go limp right away, would this have the same affect as killing the brain? Or are they still brain aware for a few seconds?

    Marty it doesn't matter what you do there will always be someone that sees something bad in it. What kills me is the fact that they watch it knowing it may bother them. At any rate just keep on keeping on. and what you showed people is compassion I think it speaks great of your will to please your fans. I use an ice pick myself esp trout that I keep. As always love your videos dude!!!

    Hi Marty,
    I too only take what I eat. If I don't eat it I don't kill it. I have had that rule since childhood. Now my question is I have always heard that letting an animal bleed out was the best way to kill it. By bleeding it out the chemicals you speak of are removed with the blood. Did you consider this method? I use your method when spearing fishing. I don't want the blood in the water.

    Thank you! I’m a Wiccan priestess of a military open circle. One of my roles is to teach the children of the group survival skills, such as fishing. The first lesson is always about prayer, reverence, compassion, and gratitude for the life about to be taken. I always feel a bit hypocritical when it comes time to end the fish’s life, especially when it comes to catfish, because of the brutal way they must be stunned (bleeding out doesn’t always work, and it’s slow). I had read a bit about Ike jime...thank you for putting out this video showing how it’s actually done. When I was stationed in Okinawa, I fished with some local friends; I admired the reverence they had for the fish, however, I never saw them kill them; they kept them alive till they got home. You did a great job with this video; it will be used in my lessons. I think it will also weed out the less serious students, too ;)

    Definitely very interesting. I've also heard that cutting the gills and allowing the fish to bleed out tends to enhance flavor, especially on darker meat species. Never tried either tactic, but will definitely give both a try the next time I decide to keep a few for the skillet!!

    I preffer cutting the gills from both sides and bleeding them to death. Blood gushes out pretty fast and one blood is out heart stops pretty soon. Putting a spike through the eyes is a bit gorey for me. I don't think I'll be able to do that.

  • @foothillscrafted1056
    @foothillscrafted1056 Před 6 lety

    Interesting info. One quick rap at the base of the skull with a pair of pliers is my usual method for trout, suckers, etc. They convulse for a few seconds, then it's lights out. I think the spike would work better on some species, especially those with more of a sloped head (like bream).
    Plus, it'll give me a quick shop project to work on. :D

      Grant Guillote - when I was a kid I had an old uncle who raised catfish. He would cut a little slit near the back of their skull and insert a thin piece of fence wire into the spine and run it all the way down the spinal cord. The fish would instantly go limp and stop struggling. It was as humane as it could be.

    Great video! Do yourself a favor go to tractor supply co or a feed @ tack store and get yourself a rubber stall mat for roughly $24.00 They come in 2 sizes and can be cut down also. . Use it to set your anchor on so the anchor is not gouging your deck. You can also use it or a piece of it to lay your fish and bait on. In general they make great work surfaces for many projects.

    I wonder should we destroy the marrow also? I did the brain destroy with small fish, but with big one like red, I use a big needle head( the one use for BBQ and Turkey cooking or Grouper extract air) stap in to the brain of the fish then use a long metal wire run in to the needle and go all the way to the fish tail. People said eventhought you destroy the brain, the marrow stills keep the body of the fish "alives" for few minutes that make the muscles can not relax, cause the meat taste ACRID.
