  • EVERY SUNDAY RELEASE FOR THIS 4 PART SERIES/ NEXT UP SUNDAY 10 MARCH EP2 Rumleigh Bridge - Shillamill Tunnel LSWR/ SUNDAY 17 MARCH EP3 Shillamill Tunnel to Viaduct LSWR (inc dangerous swollen river crossing)/ EP4 SUNDAY 24 MARCH Shillamill Viaduct to Tavistock North Station LSWR (inc final line Assessment).
The trials & tribulations of following an old railway line as close to the track bed as possible. Bere Alston station was opened on 2 June 1890 by the Plymouth, Devonport and South Western Junction Railway. Operational lines still run to Plymouth and Gunnislake.
Here in the first episode of four we leave the operating railway behind for an overgrown segment following the former LSWR line which served Tavistock, Okehampton and joined the mainline at Exeter St David's and eventually served Waterloo. Proposals have been around for over a decade to restore this line, giving a vital alternative to the vulnerable 'South Devon Railway' along the coast at Dawlish, (but only if the line is extended to Okehampton).
As can be seen here most of the track bed is solid and in good condition.

Well remember walking the line from the station [where my grandparents lived] to Rumleigh and beyond after the track was torn up in 1969, you could go as far as you wanted towards Tavistock until the vegetation started to take over probably in the 1980's.The trackbed was cleared to an extent around about 2008 when there seemed to be a real possibility that the line would reopen, unfortunately it didn't happen-better luck this time hopefully.
