  • Can I cross Braunton, Devon by using ONLY the River Caen, some deeper water in places but water is clear due to a dry period allowing the river bed to be mostly visible. Route starts at the listed Deans Bridge in Church Street & the River is followed through (mostly hidden) semi-subterranean culverts to Caen Street/ Saunton Road. EP 2 continues on to Velator where we meet the incoming tidal water & the route ends.
Bridges on route 1)Deans Bridge 2) St Brannocks Cemetery 3) Butts Bridge (A361) 4) Parks Access 5) Caen Primary Sch. (foot) 6) Railway footpath 7) Caen Street (B3231).

Interesting to see you walk down to Vellator. As a lad in the 60's, I used to get in at Deans bridge wearing my waders, carrying a lightweight rod and spinner. I would walk up the river the Knowle. There were some decent sized trout in the Caen back then!

Looks like quite a deep area just north of Deans Bridge, only spotted one fish the whole way.

When I clicked on this I kind of assumed you'd be using a boat, lolz.

You likely could after a few days of rain though Caen Street bridge would be a squeeze

Do you reckon you could wade the river Taw at low tide?

Some very deep segments and sinking mud.

Not any sewage in the Caen, only field run off I'd imagine. No sewage goes out of Vellator anymore but used to, shell fish can't be used as easily as they used to be unfortunately.

348 sewage spills into the Caen in 2023, mostly released during heavy rainfall theriverstrust.org/sewage-map

@@sandpit72 I stand corrected but only storm overflow so very watered down at least lol , at least you picked dry weather. The sewage station at Vellator used to pump out there for a long time. I guess all the fish have to go for a dump too 🤣

@@sandpit72 those are really high up and with not many houses nearby so I wonder why they open so much , the one where the river Caen and Knowl waters meet along there is an outflow for the water tanks that take the flood water away from the road but I've never really looked at the sewage spills before. Cheers.
