Shame you didn't catch them in the act, here in the UK one of my mates was parked outside my house in his modded Toyota starlet glanza while we were having a few beers. The CCTV which ran in real time to a screen showed someone walk up to his car and start trying to open the door with a screwdriver. He didn't know what to do and panicked. I on the other hand knew exactly what to do........I wasn't going to confront someone with a screw driver unarmed and in the UK the police are pretty useless, if they turn up an hour after the crimes committed you're one of the lucky ones. So I decided the best idea was to grab a large axe and chase the guy down the street with it. As soon as I shouted at this guy and went nuts at him he started running. I chased him for a few minutes until he jumped over someone's 6ft garden wall. When he landed the other side he started screaming and swearing. I saw the house lights turn on and thought I'd better get away as I'm holding a 4ft axe. It turns out a few days later he had badly sprained his ankle after jumping the wall and been arrested for going equipped for burglary and trespassing because the homeowners called the police and he couldn't walk to get away. He got his karma. Moral of the story, leave other people's stuff alone, they worked hard for it and karma will catch up to you one day.

The shop I used to work at would do that for people that clearly loved their cars and wanted them to not be written off because it wasn't really any skin off our nose and totaling cars didn't make us hardly any money vs repairing them. I had an old 80's Navara with a full sound system in it, and they destroyed the driver's door, same as this GTi-R, then mutilated the dash trying to get the headunit out. Ripped up all the carpets, tore the wiring looms to shreds trying to pull the amp out from under the seat. If they'd have just taken their time and bought a screwdriver along instead of a chainsaw, it would have been repairable. The damn thing was out in the middle of nowhere - nobody was going to sneak up on them and catch them in the act. They had all the time in the world, yet they still went out of their way to destroy it.

Also if you own an older 4wd with barn doors on the back check those rubbers, especially on the smaller door! ... a few years ago when Moog and Marty did some track and show car gigs for their fans in Australia, they had a haulage company they were using try to steal Moog's freshly completed Mini Cooper, and even went to the trouble of trying to hide it under a tarpaulin. Fortunately, Mechanical Stig hunted it down, and the show went on.
On a side note, when the show was filmed on Marty's Mum's driveway - yes I've been with them since the beginning - people would actually walk onto their film set, or film what they were doing on the street and publish it, spoiling their efforts. Around then, Moog's bike was stolen, and a member of Marty's family had their car stolen too. There's a lot behind the scenes that isn't aired so as to keep the show upbeat, but you can find articles long after the event explaining they're journey. If nothing, they're tenacious, and I'm proud to be a member of their audience - I'm a purple Daihatsu Cuore owner because of them, along with a 90' Corolla, a 98' Starlet, and a 95' Celica, all of them run reliably on a tight budget, and all of them owned through my love of this show.

I remember reading something on their blog a few years ago and think Moog's dad had his car stolen due to them filming at his place and they also used to get harrassed alot when they were filming on Marty's mum's driveway and she even got broken into I believe which is why they started filming in the shed they are in now.

@@aidenh2563 ... yeah, that's exactly the blog. It had a heading, something about not being able to stand still - about positive change, even though the premise of work done on a driveway and the way they did it was, at times, awe inspiring. That and spraying the roof of that knock-off black Civic Type R, where it ended up with tree sap, bugs and leaf litter stuck in the fresh paint, and plastic water pipes made to look like a roll cage. I seem to recall that someone tried to steal that car too, before realizing it was a quite brilliant copy ... 😎 ...

@@hhjhj393 ... I'm so glad they fought the test of time and evolved. What I've always liked about them is that, early on, the show wasn't their professional paying gig. Moog is a talented musician whose published music for Holden car's and Budweiser beer etc, and Marty is a professional sound and recording technician. They started out doing what they were doing on CZcams back in early 2008 because they genuinely love the car's and the culture that go with them. I can honestly say I've been infected by their charm, because I've been using old, interesting Japanese cars as daily transport ever since I found them. I've just completed a thousand mile road trip in my cheap and trusted 95' Toyota Celica, without issue. The thousand's of $ £ au$ I've saved over the years whilst steering clear of new car's has helped me invest my passion and learning in more pleasurable fashions. When someone tried to steal my car way back, they brought their own little RAA battery, they pumped up the flat tires, and then brought their own fuel so they didn't have to stop at a station. They just smashed the alarm, I don't think alarms provide much protection at all. It was obviously quite pre-meditated, but goes to show that you have to have smart theft prevention, because people thieves are willing to go through a lot of effort to steal it. Bringing a battery is no-big deal for them.

Someone tried once to steal my JZZ30 Soarer from outside a workshop many moons back. They damaged the steering column etc same as you guys had done to the Pulsar. But the immobilizer (Mongoose M80) I suspect prevented them from getting any further, in addition to being caught trying to steal it.
The workshop was decent enough to buy me an entirely new lock set from Japan with the correct JDM Soarer key.. and since then, I've never re-visited that workshop as it was based in a scummy area..

Tracking tiles, learn to love them, so many ways to be used. A few could be left in obvious spots, a few more could be buried inside the chassis behind a welded steel panel. Most pro car thieves won't be carrying an RF meter, but might carry an Iphone, and dry snitch on themselves. How I know about car theft from the professional side, is from a past I haven't been a part of in over 20 years. I work a good job, I have decent life, my reason for being dishonest are gone. The only thing, I hope to do now is balance my karma, by given advice from a prospective most people will never have, that of a reformed thief. I'm not proud of my past, I own it. If I can help someone not get ripped off by some jerkoff like me, it's the first thing I can do.

Another important tip if you own a desirable car is to avoid leaving your keys near the front door at night, it's remarkably easy to reach through a letterbox with a bit of coat hanger wire and snag them. I've personally done this 3 times trying to get back into my own house after locking myself out and friends houses for the same reason, you'd be surprised how far into the house you can reach if you can see what you're doing or have someone to guide you (ie. someone looking through the window). I'm told that if someone is targeting your car they sometimes knock on the door in the guise of a lost pizza delivery man (or similar forgettable, often helmeted disguise) in the evening and use the opportunity to scope where your keys are placed.
