  • The PlayStation Portal doesn’t look great, or amazing, or even good, but even still, there’s some excitement to be had about a new Sony handheld, right? I mean, a portable PS5, in some capacity might be pretty cool?
    Wrong!
    This is a disaster.
    And today, I’m gonna, talk about that.

    Good to see Sony deciding to compete with their greatest threat: the *Wii U.*

    • @alexcallender
      @alexcallender Před 9 měsíci +63

      I *WISH* the Portal worked like the Wii U; it might actually be worthwhile if that were the case. But no, apparently Sony is SO incompetent and out of touch that they didn't even give you the option of connecting to a PS5 directly - you MUST use Wi-Fi. What an utter travesty. "Abomination" is completely apt.
      This thing is even more DOA than the Wii U and Vita, and Sony continues their trend of releasing half-baked secondary Playstation products that COULD HAVE been amazing if only they'd put some real effort into them.

And the games that used this feature well, used it INCREDIBLY well to the point where the tablet was an essential part of the experience. My guess as to why this exists is that some Sony executive saw the Steam Deck and the ROG Ally and said "make me that, but for the PS5" the engineers were probably scratching their heads as to how they could do that and decided to make a local streaming device, probably because the executives specifically wanted it to work with the PS5. Why does it not do cloud streaming? I imagine that to hit a price point that makes any sense sony spent the bare minimum on internals and cloud streaming requires a processor to run a web browser and do video decode, and storage to hold the date for that cloud streaming application, while the specifications needed to do that are minimal, there aren't a lot of bottom tier Socs that can do that, that are still in production, so I imagine that's why that feature got cut.

  • @bsmarques
    @bsmarques Před 8 měsíci +1

    As a long time gamer and PC enthusiast, I kind of get it. PC as an open platform is very compatible, but the experience varies A LOT. Games are released without optimization because developers can blame your hardware instead their own bad optimized game code. You can use many headsets but most people get one with high input lag. And then you have a sea of people complaining about lag, and this starts discussions about what's good, what's bad, what's overpriced... and one can easily get tired and frustrated before even buy something. Or worse, they can buy a bad product with a good brand and reasonable price. The truth is that "console approved" stamps really makes sense, that's why people love the experience with Nintendo Switch. In the end, companies will take advantage and overprice their products, but as an adult that has limited time for gaming, it makes more sense to over pay for a consistent experience that works instead of tinkering all day with settings/products/forums. It "worth it", unfortunately, and they know this.

    Honestly they should've made this device connect directly to the console, like what the Wii U had done, or what newer mmWave streamers, like the PeakDo, are trying to accomplish. Penetration issues with millimeter wave aside, they should've found a system to make direct-to-console viable, because the issue with being connected to the network is the typical latency problems, especially on typical low-end residential hardware; hell, even streaming sticks like Roku, etc., have their _own dedicated network_ that they operate off of, for this exact reason. Oh, while we're on the topic of residential hardware, let's not forget one thing that will absolutely _break_ this local streaming setup, network isolations, even the loaner router from your ISP will have AP isolation these days, and typically it's on by default because most people will never properly set up their home network; and I can't wait to see the troubleshooting hellscape this causes, because it's not a Sony issue, yet the Sony product won't work because of it, and I doubt Sony's tech support hellhole will be properly trained to have people look at their network configuration to see if AP isolation is an option and if it's on, because every router has a different flavor of UI/UX. This was Sony's first major fumble here, besides the obvious local streaming only and lack of bluetooth.
    Second major fumble is just the design. They could've _loaded_ this thing with a battery, yet it'll get the DualSense battery life at most? They could've based this off the Edge, especially considering you're putting highly consumable components, the carbon wiper potentiometers on the sticks, into another $200 device that now also has a massive screen on it. The overall design itself is ugly, I can understand the sticks and upper menu buttons being over the bezel of the display to reduce some width, but look at the shot showing the back and top, it easily triples and thickness and for what, why does it also look like a tablet cradle from this shot as if it's another Linx Vision, Razer Edge, or Dell Venue 'gaming' tablet; except those were also a PC, though very underpowered. Also, what's on the top of the device behind the display panel, as the panel overhangs the rest of the molding, are those system buttons for the tablet itself, or are those vents for no apparent reason, just what the hell is going on with this design. And speaking of buttons, where's the trackpad features, I can understand touchscreen but where's the trackpad click, there's no way in hell Sony is expecting a touchscreen tap to suffice, we all know how finnicky that can get; and while we're on this topic, does it have the advanced haptics, does it have gyro, etc.
    The third major fumble, which some people might not agree with, is the lack of additional functionality, such as doing a Wii U pad clone where you have two displays. Remember how PS Move would get game integrations, there's no reason developers shouldn't have an option to have a secondary screen as display and input. And the great thing about this is that you could use phones with game streaming with this feature as well, though UI scaling could get a bit weird, but it's a niche enough circle that this shouldn't be a hurdle. This would be helpful with UI-heavy games ore menu-heavy games, even games that give you an assload of text, like what RPGs can get into, would benefit from this. It's not a bad idea and it's fully implementable with somewhat minimal effort on both game engine and game dev sides. It's a niche QOL thing, like how the Wii U itself fit a niche crowd (not talking about sales numbers, talking about the dual screen usability feature), like how the Steam Controller was a niche tool with massive feature set aspects; or within the realm of Sony, how the Vita had both a touch screen and rear touch pad, or again how Move introduced the overhead for feature set beyond what just standard controls provided. What they should've done is borrowed from the various handheld designs, the Steam Deck has general approval ergonomics-wise and it even has four rear buttons, and that kind of device profile (mostly flat back with finger insets) would've allowed for so much more room for batteries within the Portal.
    Though I can see why Sony did this, the tablet with controllers. It's a unified experience, if you want the 'proper' game streaming experience you choose the first party device, not a phone with a weird aspect ratio with either a proper controller with a phone clip or one of those janky mobile controllers that clamp around your phone. It's like how PSVR/PSVR2 only works on first party headsets, and not just any random headset you can get your hands on. Sony thinks this is the proper size of display for the experience, just literally every other aspect of the device is lacking severely. Do I agree with the price tag? Not really, especially for what it is and what it's capable of; though can anyone agree with Sony's pricing of any peripheral as of late? I think it's a baby step in the right direction, but Sony is fumbling their first attempt, and they'll abandon it when people don't like it, rather than going through the proper development steps and providing something decent off the bat; lack of bluetooth in such a simple device is a clear indicator that this is severely underdeveloped and that the end product is closer to a prototype than anything, the godawful design is another indicator of this.
    I just don't get Sony this generation. Weird controller API(s) that end up as a walled garden (see lack of third party support and lack of API conversion sticks, plus the fightpad situation), their stance on first party games and ports (see noticeable drop in performance on the PC side, plus their asinine controller API situation there as well), the PSVR2 situation, and now this plus the headphone situation. Sony is going heavy into the anti-consumer bullshit, Xbox is the opposite, and Nintendo is off in their own little world as always.

I like the idea of using my PC to do it, but in all honesty, I find myself never using the PC feature because my laptop is quite... Well, it takes up less room than this emerging handheld market. I just want one for my Xbox games because in practice I still play on my Xbox instead of my PC and streaming to my laptop is ok but would be better if I had a handheld. I don't want to spend money on a cheap Steam Deck when all I want is to stream from my Xbox. I'm jealous of Sony fans even with its shortcomings like no Bluetooth.

    Sony is a bit nostalgic with the old proprietary wire, software and files on sony tech in the late 90s and 2000s

    The only difference in steam deck pricing is how much built in storage you want

    I think it’s meant to confuse consumers who know nothing about video games too buy this accidentally instead of a switch. Especially with the holiday season coming up where switches notoriously are always sold out

    Remember, it's not a stand along device and it's not marketed as such. It's a controller accessory.
    A dualsense costs $70, an 8 inch lcd screen capable of 60fps would cost about $100. The form factor and "link" technology added on, for $200 total. Not bad. Maybe not what you need, but there can be a market for it.

    So does it have to be the same wifi that your ps5 is connected too?

      I don't think so, but the further you are from it the higher the latency. Meaning if you are on vacation and use it to stream from your console at home, you're going to have to deal with up to a full second of delay.

      You can even remote play from another continent. But the latency will be horrendous, you could only play turn based RPGs at that point.
      Cloud gaming would be the answer to that, since the game will be on a server with lower ping and with a higher upload speed than the household internet connected to your PS4/5

    Literally Sony made this just to use the excuse that “no, no one likes our portables so that’s why it didn’t sell well” absolute shitty product made by Sony. At least make it an android device with a ps5 interface

    What if they made a handheld that could download your ps4/5 games so you can play them on the go offline?

    I thought this was fake when I first saw the picture. The fact that they wasted resources on this garbage, that this thing made it through all of the checks and balances required to leave the concept stage and make it to actual production is mind numbing.
