Sometimes it boggles my mind to see a barely 13 yo girl sing with such precision and power. I've heard everything AJ has done, and for me, this remains her best technical performance. Angelina recently performed to soldout crowds in Vegas on the same stage as Elvis. She did a 19 set show, then changed into another outfit and did another 19 set show. WOW! I'm including my favorite performance (hard to choose) from that wonderful night. Regarding the mask. As an artist, you perform for people. Your fans are used to seeing you in a certain way. Freddie Mercury performed this song and it was an incredible success! Freddie died quite young and lately he used a lot of makeup to hide his face, marked by illness. The lyrics of the song also hint at this. Many artists understand this with a "mask" you put on when you perform! This is my own interpretation of why Angelina has this mask before she starts singing. As the lyricist points out "The show must go on". A genius at work. I am so happy for everything Angelina gives me. Open to corrections from any Angels or Queen-fan if I mispoke. / A Swedish Viking.

Great commentary Nina. as always. Yes, vocal power, dynamics & breath control are definitely NOT shortcomings of Angelina's vocals. Her ability to push to a full belt, then smoothly & quickly pull it back to a whisper is unmatched. Her 16 yo version of My Funny Valentine, filmed in the antique store & any version of her original song, Million Miles, are great examples of that push-pull vocal technique. As you said, "she is a master."
Another Angelina cover where the meaning of the lyrics is somehow clearer than the original. Perhaps with the original we’re listening to both music and lyrics, but here the backing track is incidental to Angelina’s vocals. Again she shows us that a young child is one of the best interpreters of lyrics that are mature and powerful. And she shows us the passion of those lyrics with a beautiful voice that is a perfect choice from those thousand voices she has in her toolkit.
Simple backing track , sitting down ,chilling and delivering another dynamic performance ! Angelina is the queen of covers and never disappoints only amazes me every time ! I think Angelina was only 12 or 13 in this video and sounded so good ! I want to thank you again Nina for your absolute informative analysis and I appreciate your heartfelt comments ! Have a strong suspicion that the mask was her artwork, representing Freddie's struggles with the disease. I loved her mask...the lyrics point out that whatever difficult feelings one is dealing with, the performer puts on a mask to cover them and present a face that matches "the show".. the design on the mask is similar to the outfit she wore for her America's Got Talent (the Champions)...courtesy of Grandma Mery's artistic gift. As for our Angel, her creativity when & how she uses her vocal ornaments is masterful. The result is a performance Mr. Mercury would appreciate. This cover was Angelina demonstrating her power. She doesn't often belt (like so many other singers seem compelled to do). Instead, she chooses much more subtle approaches to her music (dynamics, melismas, rasp, vocal fry, breath control, etc.). While all of these techniques were in evidence here, the overwhelming fullness of her belting was different for her -- including the ending (which, while generally a full belt, still had the subtlety of vowel modification, breath and pitch control throughout a very long sustained note). Beautifully done.

There are two really magical moments for me in this cover. The first is the bridge, which rivals Freddy's performance for swag and emotional variety; the second is the crescendo on that last note. It's a very credible cover, but for my taste it lacks the rhythmic precision in phrasing that I associate with classic rock. All the same, I think it would be so good for Angelina as an artist to do a year touring as the lead singer of Queen. Can you imagine????? Oh, Angelina just announced her current collab with Toby Gad. She'll be covering If I Were A Boy, and I can't WAIT!

The significance of the mask is two fold it is. generaly said that Freddie lived the last part of his life behind a mask . The paint scheme of Angelina's mask is the same as the outfit she wore on AGT for her Bohemian Rhapsody cover. It was probably painted by Grandma Mery or possibly Angelina...

To be honest, I can hear she's a technically good singer. But I can also hear that she's too young and inexperienced to imbue this song with any real meaning.

The pain, the determination, the acceptance, the fearful odds, they're just not there. Instead, it's sterile and pretty. Like from someone who's never felt those emotions. This song is about dying, man. Something that a 13 year old knows very little about.
