  • Porsche 911 owner interviews are the single best source for you to understand why there is such magical allure to these cars.
Ask any Porsche 911 owner - especially air cooled 911 owners - why they love their cars and you're likely to hear answers like "these cars have a soul" and "the quality" and "the community."
But don't let me speak for these owners (who happen to be buddies of mine)...you can hear for yourself in these Porsche 911 owner interviews.
I was able to meet up with 2 fellow Porsche 911 owners and enjoy some spirited driving...and get them to let me interview them about each of their cars.
One of these owners has a gorgeous 1991 Porsche 911 964 in Cobalt blue with linen interior. The car is very special, and in the interview he tells you exactly what makes this 964 so special. On a personal note, I really enjoyed this Porsche 911 interview as I hadn't really had the chance to spend much time around the Porsche 964. And, by the way, the 964 can easily hang with the 993 on the straights and in the twisties. Ask me how I know lol.
The second Porsche 911 interview is with another buddy who owns a 1995 Porsche 911 993, which is really the year to have. He explains a little bit about it in the video. But, because I own a 95 993 myself, I'll go into what makes the 1995 Porsche 911 the right 993 to own in a later video.
In the meantime, here are some of the mods he's done to his 1995 Porsche 911:
    - Fister stage 3 mufflers
    - Goldenrod
    - PSS9 Coilovers
    - ERP Rear Toe Arms
    - Pinned Tie Rods
    - Walrod Front Control Arm Bushings
    - RS Engine Mounts
    - Rennline Reinforced Engine Carrier
    - Rennline Front Strut Bar
    - Bergville HID Headlight Kit
    - Front bumperette delete
    - Turbo scoops
    - Headlight lens squirter delete
Both of these Porsche 911 owners will share with you why they love, love, love their respective cars, and you'll hopefully learn why the Porsche 911 is so widely regarded as the quintessential sports car.

    About My Channel:
Rennthusiast (formerly Bavarian Enthusiast TV) is for the most part a Porsche 911 channel centering on experiencing air cooled Porsches, but will also feature other vintage, analog vehicles I add to the collection. The channel is the result of my deep passion for air cooled Porsches, my interest in the air cooled Porsche community, my obsession with modding, improving, buying and selling cars in general and my desire to put myself out there on CZcams and share these passions with other enthusiasts.
As I continue to build this channel, I'll be adding more cars to the mix, and will likely branch out beyond the German sports car genre as is the case with this video. Why? Because I LOVE cool collector cars and as my interests morph and change, so will this channel.
As of the date of this video, the collection includes a 1995 Porsche 911 993 Coupe, a 1986 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera Coupe, a 2007 Porsche 911 Turbo, a 2000 Toyota Landcruiser and....a 1993 Toyota Landcruiser FZJ80 (no it’s not German but it’s been a bucket list vehicle for me so it’s now in the collection).

Great video highlighting this era especially from an owners perspective.
I have 3 BMW’s, and the natural shift to Porsche is occurring. Could I daily a 964 in Florida especially with summer temps? And for work, once per week I drive 163 miles, all open highway during off hours from any peak traffic in a 6 speed manual M3 and absolutely love that 2 1/2 hours. Would subjecting an air cooled 963/964 be considered crazy? Fwiw....I do all of my own maintenance and don’t care about ride quality, gas, tires or oil.

    • @Rennthusiast

Billy Johnson I will reach out to the owner and see what he says. I will share that the AC in both my 993 and my 3.2 are great.
As far as dailying these cars, they are bulletproof when properly maintained. My 86 fires up each time no problem as does my 993.
I recently drove my 993 to and from FL (about 1,000 miles) in 3 days and it just loves to go and go. I also find it to be exceptionally comfortable, in fact more so than a 2018 BMW X5M I used to own.
By the way, I took it down to Werks Reunion and did a video about the trip if you’re interested.

      Billy Johnson from the owner:
Yes, AC blows cold in a 964. Can also be converted to R12. A good system, if in top shape. Works well in NC, but can’t promise with FL heat, tint windows also...

Agree they should be driven. I don’t agree with the owner of the blue 964. In my experience “collectors” don’t want to sell their cars to people who will drive them. I’ve been turned away from two different Porsche collectors that refused to sell to me because I said that I would be driving the car. Not to daily drive, but weekends only. They wanted to sell to someone who would stick it in a garage and look at it only. You want to buy from an enthusiast, not a collector.

Do you research in full, most air cooled cars are getting pretty old and can cost you $30-40K in service pretty fast depending on the year and model. Drive many to make sure you actually enjoy what they have to offer or if you are just being romantic about the cars. I bought my 911 and have regretted it ever since.

I really loved your video. Great to see guys just loving and riding their cars. I agree with Tim below, "You buy the seller"... I have 9 or 10 Porsches, most pretty rare, but I ride three often; 1990 964 C2 which has 25,000 miles and is mint and I keep it mint as one of my daily riders. I upgraded the obvious things as everyone does. I also love my 1971 911S -- Mint and another daily. Last, I ride an early 1965 911 coupe but living in Florida only allows riding that during 3 months of winter since it has no AC. Anyway, we all have the same passion -- regardless of which Porsche we ride.

Whatever anyone says, without the 996 there wouldn’t be a 997,991 or 992. There wouldn’t even be a Porsche name anymore. I don’t get the dislike. So the headlight covers get some flack, underneath they are still round. The IMS issue just makes them affordable, as long as you don’t go for a ridiculously low mileage one. I loved my 996 and I love my 986. Generally I just love 911’s, Boxsters/Caymans and who couldn’t adore a 356. The 996/986 have a special place, yes they are the first water cooled but as I say without them you couldn’t appreciate the 991 GT2 RS there wouldn’t be a 918 etc. Porsche would be done, game over.

Bought my 991 in Seattle, flew up with the whole family and drove it back to San Francisco. Took the long route along the coast. Amazing experience, even though my family bailed out in Portland and flew the rest of the way (there was some snow predicted on the route, or so they say that was their excuse.) But kids did 4+ hours straight in the back seat Seattle to Portland and never complained once.

I did a fly, buy, and drive for my first 911t. Flew from Chicago to Minneapolis and drove back through flurries and a rainstorm. Then, I did it again with my friend for his 911t a couple months later; this time Cleveland. I recommend it! They’re great occasions for a road trip! This is assuming the car has had a PPI, of course😉

    • @Rennthusiast
      @Rennthusiast  Před 4 lety +1

PPI is a non-negotiable with any car deal, remote or otherwise, in my opinion.
I always ask the seller within the first 5 questions if he/she is open to a PPI (I usually first approach via text). The seller’s openness to a PPI speaks volumes about the car.
If they hesitate even a little I’m out.

  • @el_vaquero_del_condado

Hi there. Just discovered your channel, went over some videos and subscribed on the spot. So my dad had an SC and a Carrera when I was a kid but Ìve never been a Porsche owner yet, as Íve never managed to get a hold on a properly priced 993, which is THE Porsche I want. So now, by sheer serendipity a client of mine offered to sell me his 1995 993 with original handle type spoiler and all, but alas, being a ´95, it has no VarioRam... So my question is how to rationalize getting a non VarioRam 993? Are there any intrinsic advantages to the non VR cars vs the later VR engined versions? Any feedback would be appreciated...

    • @Rennthusiast
      @Rennthusiast  Před 3 lety +1

Snatch it up as long as it’s clean, accident free and you know what you’re getting maintenance-wise.
I think (and I’m not alone on this) that 95 is the best year. No immobilizer and carbon build up in the SAI doesn’t trigger CEL. They’re all great, though.
Downside of 95 is that it’s OBD 1 so troubleshooting can be a bit more challenging than 96 - 98 with their OBD 2.
I have not driven a varioram car but from what I have read the power increase isn’t noticeable enough to pass over a 95. I also understand Steve Wong offers a chip for the 993 so that can boost performance as can a lightweight flywheel.
I am literally responding to this comment while sitting in my ‘95 993 after a drive and as usual it was completely fulfilling. In no way shape or form do I feel this car doesn’t have enough power.
So, hope that helps. Good luck. What color is the car you’re considering?

@@Rennthusiast Thanks for your quick reply. So it’s a dark blue version; don’t recall the exact name of the color. It looks pretty nice, 45K miles, with said light flywheel, and other options/enhancements (Billstein suspension, lighter crankshaft, etc.). The leather on the seats is busted (cracked) but otherwise everything seems in order. The selling price is $60K, which seems a little high, but we’re trading (car for remaining design fees; I’m an architect designing his new house)...

i had a 79 911 with a few minor mods, sway bars, torsion bars , lowerd. to me the best part of a 911 is taking it on a track and driving it to your limit. most people will not drive it to its limit. to me that is what it is all about everything else is not important. just driving the car, balls to the wall and being thrilled by the way it preforms. i hate videos where they take you out on the road and drive 60 and yak yak yak, what bullshit , take it on a track and go for it. i am near 80 and still yearn for a 911 but think to myself if i cant go on a track , what is the use. i think i am still capable but there are other family issues.

Jarrett has taken his slate grey 993 on the track. I know for a fact he likes to push it to its limits. Most of the guys I know and really respect in this community are drivers and share the same philosophy I have, which is drive a 911 like it’s meant to be driven. Don’t leave it in the garage and don’t be afraid to break it bc they’re pretty dang bulletproof when properly maintained.

How do you have a Porsche channel, "I don't know much about the 964". You come off as another check book enthusiast. Hi I'm a rich guy look at all my Porsche's I don't know much about them or work on them, but hey I'm on trend.

+1. .. Great Porsche series of yore. .. Enjoyed a Stone Grey metallic `90 944 S2 coupe as a daily driver of ten years. .. The Uber ski coupe! .. Luv'd that car. .. Stone Grey Metallic LY7U is understated perfection. .. The 944/968 chassis cars are sorely missed.
