- I have had my 2018 BMW M140i Shadow Edition for 6 months. This BMW M140i 6 Month Review will delve in to my experience over the last 6 months and give an honest account of my thoughts on the car.
In summary, I absolutely love it and I am so glad I was inspired by Lovecars, Joe Achilles and Realtorque97.
I am looking forward to the next 6 months with the car!

I'd like to see you drive two M140i's with the regular m sport suspension and the adaptive one back to back just to settle this thing once and for all :-)
Haha but I don’t want to come away from it prefering adaptive and not being able to do anything about it 😂

Thanks NFoxtv - I must be the oldest owner of an M140i in the country, so mine has a comparatively quiet life and spends quite a lot of its time city driving. I have the old geezer options of automatic transmission and adaptive suspension but I still love a blast from time to time. I was interested in your fuel consumption figures and can't quite reconcile those with your demonstrated style. Awesome car mate! Picked mine up in September and lovin’ every minute driving it. Haven’t got the mods you have done but still totally awesome. Keep up the good work on the vids and thank you for doing your video in a clean car. Have seen some where they are doing vids in dirty cars. Doesn’t take long to give it a wash before filming!

Terrific vid work Nick, really nicely put together, but importantly retains your authenticity.
Koni Sport shock absorbers are worth a look if you're interested in improving the handling on a sensible budget, could combine them with a set of springs and they would give some adjustability.

Nice review. Agree entirely with everything you said. I’ve had more expensive cars in the past but never enjoyed them as much as my M140.

Mine is 3 weeks old today. Agree with the brake bite. I came from a performance pack Golf 7.5 and the brakes in that, initially at least, felt a lot stronger. Also I find the heater pretty weak. The pattern of the heated rear is weird as well.
I do love the ride, the kicking down two gears to engage rocket mode, the cheap replacement windscreen price is going to come in handy as well (unfortunately).
I never liked the looks especially in the five door like mine. Mines a lease car so no mods planned but I do need to investigate getting apple car play.

Yeah it’s an odd one the brakes, but i’ll be sure to update you all how I get on with pads etc when I get around to it.
How are you finding the car overall to the golf? I spent a bit of time with the golf r and whilst very capable, I just found it a little bit dull. Meanwhile the 140 just has me smiling ear to ear!

Very good presentation and review. Agree exactly what you mean by the M240i/M2. I said the same when I revetment M240i which is why I didn't buy the M240i. Remus sounds mad!

Brake pad upgrade will help the cause mate, stock brakes are great, however once the stock pads get serious heat in them ie; track day they lose their bite. Great vid!

Great Video! I ordered a M140i in the same color just today. Can't wait to pick it up. Could you maybe talk a little bit about the rear open diff in the wet? Thats the only thing that I am a little concerned about. Especially in cold, wet/snowy conditions. I am from south Germany, so weather in the winter can be a bit nasty. Thanks for watching and commenting! It is definitely not the best in the snow or wet weather. Very little traction, also when tyres are cold. I just take it careful in this type of westher in the UK and it has been ok.
If I get a chance I will see if I can somehow demonstrate and convey this in a video!
Wicked vids mate! Just picked up a 140 myself, absolutely love it! Looking at a body kit for it now. Seen your KSB kit and it looks ace! Also much cheaper than the maxton kit. Is the quality good? And did you install yourself?
Jo Furnival thanks mate! Yeah it’s all only cheap abs plastic anyway so I would go KSB again if I had to choose again! I was not too well when buying this kit so I paid a chap called Reegan to supply and fit. He’s a member on our FB group BMWCHOICE if you wanted to speak to him about it 👍🏻

hoopsbreaker I think without a doubt it would put the car up a level. However for me, I struggle to justify the cost of one based on the fact majority of my driving is relatively steady on UK roads.
The car is still great fun as it is, if I could afford/justify an LSD I would go for it. Sorry if it is a bit of a politicians answer 😂
As someone who is considering switching from a Leon Cupra to an M140i, thanks for this useful video and the one going through the infotainment. I notice you have apple car play, was that standard? I use Android auto and I'm confused if it's standard, optional or if I would need an MMI type box.
I had carplay coded in, and then later coded the fullscreen. I don’t think there was an android auto feature at the time but I am also not 100% sure as I’ve never been an android user. Sorry I can’t be more help!
My previous M240i also drank coolant. It took a lot longer than 4K miles before it became noticeable. I think I’d done around 14k when it first triggered the warning light. The dealer checked it over and couldn’t find any issue, so I got the usual “keep an eye on it”.
TheLeeMather yep I suspect I will get the same! I am not completely confident in my local BMW dealer so eill just keep tabs myself and see what happens! Interesting that you saw similar in the 240 though. Thanks for watching and sharing 🙂
NFoxtv like you, I googled it and there were quite a few B58 owners who’d experienced it. I did top it up once more after the initial issue, then I assume it was also before topped up or changed when it was serviced at 18k. The economy is pure witch craft for sure, not something the M2C has, which isn’t too much of an issue except on spirited trips where less than 200 between stops is a royal pain in the arse.
Another great video from you Nick, my M140i is nearly 3months old and I get a real buzz from it every time I’m out on the road. Only downside is that their is no after market exhaust to fit my car because of the damn OPF insisted on by the Interfering Eurocrats😡😡😡!!!!
Thanks mate and yes I am so grateful to have had mine in before the change. You can apparently still get the backbox done though. I am hoping to do a video soon to compare the remus on my non ppf and someone elses just backbox on a ppf variant.
NFoxtv any idea which system will fit?
I have been talking to a fellow M140i owner who has mentioned he has a remus back box on his. So I guessing they offer something, otherwise not completely sure in all honesty.

Just bought a 140i & its an excellent car , I know exactly where your coming from regarding the brake bite , you've certainly got to give it more pressure but they do pull the car up , not sure if its intentional by bmw to minimise locking up too easily when pushing on .
I've looked into a Lichfield stage 1 map & there special diff they do , would be fantastic content for all the M140i owners out there if someone did a vid on these 😉

There is nothing else on the market that could give me the same experience of being both a comfortable town cruiser, and a fun weapon.
Agreed, such a difficult car to replace and have as many boxes ticked 👌🏻
@@NICKFOXTV Just come back from a 90 minute drive over the Lincolnshire Wolds.
The roads were rammed with bikers all enjoying the dry weather.
I swear, not a single bike pulled away from me, and trust me they were trying hard.
600cc's were easy meat, I even let them go and then caught them up while they were absolutely caning their bikes, and had to back off when I caught them up.
The only thing that I wouldn't have been able to overtake was a 900cc Ducati, although I was keeping up with him, and he couldn't pull more than a few cars length gap.
Awesome car (mine's remapped to well over 400bhp).
Of course, from a standstill most bikes would get away, but from a 30mph village going into an NSL and they scream away, the torque of the B58 is incredible.
Agreed mate, pound for pound I don’t think anything else comes close. Amazing cars and I miss mine so much!

Is that just the Remus backbox, or catback system? Everyone raves at the sound in Sports mode, but how socially acceptable is it in Comfort? Thanks!
It’s a cat back mate, in comfort it’s not too bad in my opinion. If you put your foot down it can still be a bit loud but no over powering. The main bit for me was driving on the motorway, there is no laborious drone when in comfort at 70ish which is ideal. 🙂

Great vid, I also came into my 140i from a 2012 S3 8p 👍🏻 owned the 140 for nearly 18 months. As we do, already planning the next car... golf r is turning my head, 4x4, all weather abilities maybe bit more practical. Am I mad??
18 months is a pretty good stint to be fair :) Personally I would say yes you are mad, however, I will extend on this as it isn't black and white by any means. I moved away from the S3 mainly because of it's ability and the fact it felt too safe and made the whole experience a little dull for me. Having driven the Golf R, it is a very similar feel. Now there is absolutely no denying that both the S3 and the Golf R are both incredible cars, extremely capable and there is a reason there are so many on the roads! It's just for me, they just lack a bit of flare.
The M140i, especially in this current weather, tries to kill me every now and then. It keeps me on my toes and engaged. The S3, and Golf R, just felt like the car was doing everything for me. Again completely my opinion, it depends what it is you are looking for in a car. I actually recently recommended the Golf R to a colleague who has now bought one, but that was because it was the best car in that price bracket I knew of that fitted his requirements. Apparently, he didn't want to die in the near future?!
NFoxtv not the first time I’ve heard the ‘lack of involvement’ perspective mentioned and yep I agree after owning the S3 (8p). maybe I need to make more time to enjoy the 140 in the dry. I’ve also heard a blogger describe the 140 as more a bit of a GT type car and the golf r as the ultimate daily car. After driving in the rain/snow and the lack of cold tyre performance in the M140i, I get it. I think my goals/wants have changed and the ‘get in and go’ factor of the golf r is what attracts me plus the fact the golfs performance is on tap year round 🤔
Yeah the Golf would certainly offer you that over the M140i! 🙂

This vid is honestly music to my ears (albeit a bit late to watching it). I’m actually really interested in the 140i and I can’t quite afford the M2 :( however I was wondering when choosing to buy, were you ever tempted by the Golf R? Both seem so highly spec’d and most of the videos or owners of both seem very happy. I’ve driven the 140i and loved it, but not sure if I should at least consider the R? Also have you still got the 140, still love it?
Craig Martin hi mate, thanks for watching! I do still have it mate and love it, I came from an S3 (similar to the Golf R), and I have spent a lot of time with Golf Rs but they aren’t really for me. Very capable cars just for me I prefer the M140i. Definitely try both though 👍🏻

Sounds awesome, I still think the m240i would be a better car . Brakes might not feel as sharp because your going that fast lol .
Steven Foley definitely think the 240i would feel more planted/stable and they look better I think. But I know what I am like and it would upset me! 😂
I am guessing that is the remus catback? My only option is the backbox from them at the moment being a PPF car :(

I have a PPF and have had the backbox and resonator modded by PCW. Transforms the sound for £300! Like the Remus it’s nice but not too much, borderline asbo and no drone!

NFoxtv That would be good I reckon. Trying to decide whether I should go for the Remus back box or hold out to see if any new systems designed with the PPF in mind are released.

M140i will give you 7 or 8 10tenths of the usable performance of the M2.
When putting into sport plus and pushing hard on B roads it's as fast as you'll be able to realistically go short of a track day without driving yourself into a serious accident and that's assuming you have a clear road and good weather conditions
Excellent video, very well produced - what agreat car the M140i is. I just hope you're telling your insurers about the mods to the car, otherwise they may refuse to pay out after the anticipated crash
