A division bell is a parliamentary device that is used to signal that debate on legislation is over and votes must be cast. The metaphor is that as people grow up they begin to make choices, divide and separate. Leaving old friends and places. Making decisions that can't be taken back. Given the history of The Floyd, these lyrics are full of nostalgia. Something that you appreciate as you get older. The guitar Dave Gilmour uses towards the end is a blonde Fender Deluxe lap steel. And that echo of the piano and guitar, good catch. That means a lot.

Dave Gilmour is from Cambridge, UK. The magnets and miracles refers to Cambridge University and all the scientific discoveries there. The Long Road and The Causeway are roads in Cambridge. The division bell is a bell that's rung when the UK government has to go and vote. The bell rings and the politicians divide into two groups, those voting yes or no to something. It's all about making choices in life, living with them and looking back. If you love piano then you need to listen to Pink Floyd's The Great Gig In The Sky.

It's a "lap steel", and yes it's a guitar and it has markings on it to mark where the frets on an ordinary guitar would be. It's really fun to play. Check out "One Of These Days" from the same concert (Pompeii 2016), basiclly just 7 min with lap steel and some really cool bass. You'll be blown away. I've never mastered playing slide on an ordinary guitar, so I have one of these. Gilmour has played regulary a lap steel with Pink Floyd since 1970, so you'll find it on a lot of Pink Floyd songs.

There are grown adults that don't have anything to say about this song, about how the piano complements the slide guitar, about the significance of "the division bell", etc. These young woman and man are not only smart but are also so insightful. As soon as the line "the hunger still unsatisfied" hit she immediately related it to the desire of "I had the chance to do something or be someone and didn't take it therefore I'm full of regret" that her dad was talking about right away. Thanks to technology these young people are discovering things that will make them be one of the greatest generations. I seriously respect you guys.

Appreciate your dad sharing this deep and beautiful cut from the later Pink Floyd era. A song redolent with nostalgia for a simpler time in life before the division bell sets us apart. The piano, guitar, synths, vocal and the bell all call forth that longing pain of nostalgia. Love your reactions and reminds me of when I was a teen and in the full flush of discovering rock music. Keep up the great work all! Definitely recommend more Floyd (Anything from Animals or Wish Your Were Here) and Rush (Xanadu (Live) Exit Stage Left, Anything from Permanent Waves -- and then La Villa Strangiato and YYZ (Live in Rio for sure!) for crazy good instrumentals...

While walking through fairie, there are dark forests, even dragons in the perilous realm, but there is always light and hope breaking through on our path. You are both on a special pilgrimage. Thanks for letting us join you. David Gilmour and Steve Hackett are great guitar tour guides through the perilous realm. Grateful for your thoughtful comments and your Dad's musical selections.

The metal thingy is called a slide. You can use it on a regular guitar too. So whether there is markers or not, yes he is placing it where the frets are or would be.

It's actually filmed in the ruins of Pompeii that was destroyed and buried in ash by a volcano 79 AD. It was discovered in modern times and excavated. So this is the original amphitheater from the city. Pink Floyd did a music movie playing there in the early seventies.

I wanted to see Sir David Gilmour live once. I don't know if it will ever happen but knowing i grew up with PF and Mr Gilmour's guitar magic makes me feel good. Atleast i grew up with PF and still listen to them everyday and will do so for the rest of my life. God bless PF. God bless Sir David. God bless us all !

Welcome to Pink Floyd. Can’t wait to see you be blown away by more David Gilmour guitar magic in the future. Also, the instrument he’s playing is called a lap steel guitar. It is essentially a guitar that you play horizontally. The “rollie” thing is a metal tube that he runs across the strings as he plucks them. There are markings, called frets, on the lap steel guitar just like any other guitar or ukulele and that’s how he knows where to slide the steel cylinder.

Hi from Spain, sorry for my English.
I love Pink Floyd, for me is the best rock band ever. They give us more 40 wonders songs. My favorite song is "Another brick in the wall", but not is the best...
Another brick in the wall" or "Learning to fly" or "Time"
    Thanks

The lap guitar solo at the end is simply perfection. And I'll echo with Lobo The Main Man said; this song as a very melancholy meaning and it's something you'll understand when you get older.

Girls there's so much to tell you. First of all its great to see kids of your age is listening to music of Pink Floyd. First of all the video playing on the big screen is the music video of the song. Second that instrument is called by different names. Steel guitar, Lap Guitar, Slide guitar and so on. And it has frets in it like a guitar. And lastly but very importantly listen to this song some ten years later. You'll have a very different appreciation for this song.

The lap steel guitar is most often found in Country music because it can have a keening sound that echoes the lament found in many, especially older, country songs. It's a guitar with steel strings, like a standard electric guitar, but it's played with a metal slide on at least one finger that allows the player to slip and slide from note to note without the characteristic staccato pop normal guitar fingering produces. Slide guitar, that is playing a guitar with a slide, is also found in a lot of blues music where the technique can be heard both on an electric guitar and occasionally on acoustic guitar, which produces an often mournful sound.

The instrument you were wondering about is a lapsteel guitar. It is used for slide guitar playing. If I remember right, the song is about the world not being what he as a child expected or wanted the world to be. Something like that.

  • @PendelSteven

And well, the horizontal guitar is called a Pedal Steel Guitar. They are mainly used in country & western by the way. It's not a lap steel though, as have been said in the comments. That is like it, but literally rests on your lap. The Pedal Steel Guitaar is the one that stands.

Pink Floyd is not just a rock group, they truly are a total symphony experience. Now, with the complete clarity we get with our sound quality, that experience is exponentially engrossing...
To little old me, this song is about becoming adult and being forced to see the world in a far less whimsical way and suddenly the world becomes divided and broken hearted.

  • @rachmusic9873

He’s playing a lapsteel which is I guess “some alteration of a guitar”. Early versions of the song were played with an electric guitar ending solo.
