Hi This Guys Tesla, just wanted to say what an excellent video you have created, and i am really impressed with the installation and finishing . I myself am based in the UK and use solar PV myself. Is their any requirements in the United States to install insulation/ double or triple glazing/ energy efficient appliances and lighting to improve the energy efficiency of your properties/homes prior to installing. In the UK you need to meet a minimum energy efficiency level in order to be able to receive a feed in tariff. Just asking as it would be interesting to compare. Wishing you every success with your system.

Really great video mate. I’ve been wondering about these systems for a while now. I’m an installer I’m Australia and would love to be involved in an install to check out the gear. I don’t know how they make any money on these installs (I assume they don’t). With that many guys for that many hours it seems like the install alone should be prohibitively expensive. Question, what is the lifespan of the power wall batteries? Will they be payed off by the time you will have to replace them? Thanks for the quality video legend! It must have taken a looong time to produce/edit. I’m impressed.
Seems like you could have had 1 or 2 more power walls as your solar charged then up really quick (in winter low sun conditions, not bad really) but from the bit right at the end you seems to suggest the two power walls are able to keep you off grid overnight on battery power so guess 1-2 more not needed (unless you got another tesla car I guess)

The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle.The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts.If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.
I'm a roofer for 17 years now. I own my own business. It's really sad when the sheeting is missed like this. The inspector should've caught it. But I want you to know those prices are really fair. That is extra $3800 based on date of install was extremely fair. They didn't price gouge on that at all.

This more than anything else impressed me. That company deserves a million shout outs for taking this kind of care to ensure that not only their customer but also their customer's neighbors are happy with the installation.

Thank you for posting this video. This is one of the most comprehensive videos I’ve ever seen that walks prospective customers through the whole purchase process. This is something that I would love to do with my house someday when we’re able to afford it.
Agree with the word ‘comprehensive’ for sure. If anyone ever needed to know the ins and outs of the entire process, it’s very well laid out here. Of course these projects are complex, the paperwork, the timings, the surprises, all need to be anticipated and overcome, and that’s what the video demonstrates. And as another comment posted…all without any complaints! That’s the way to do it.
I'm actually really impressed that the city did the calculation and denied your permit initially because the panels weren't sufficient to utilize both batteries. I'm 99% certain my city's permit office would have neither noticed nor cared if there were such a discrepancy in my plan.
I can tell you my city would have either stared glossy eyes at the plans all the while asking each other what the heck a Tasla roof was, or simply give the the OK just to keep the ball rolling.
They care on your behalf, so you won't have to take responsibility. The cost of caring for you like that, is what you pay extra in taxes. Bonus: You don't get to decide for yourself.

My takeaway from this video is be professional and nice. I love it how the Tesla roof team emptyed the trash cans of the street. When that guy said we use A+ contractors that's why our prices may be higher, well he wasn't kidding. Those guys are so incredibly professional and well mannered to take away the trash like that. 👍

A normal 6KW solar roof system connected with the grid costs me around 5k here in India. It doesn't stores the power as it's connected with the grid with a bidirectional energy meter. I am happy that I have reduced my bill to zero by producing bit more than what I consume and carbon footprint as well. Thanks for sharing this video. Hopefully we have this technology available one day in India too at a reasonable price.
The price hike for extra things that need to be done are usual on older houses. No one gives you a quote for what they think will need to done once the roof is taken off. You never know what you will find. That's true with any old house no matter what you do.
@@christopherbernhardt they charged him 3,800 for some OSB and soffits. That legit like $400 product and $300 labour. The subs saw Tesla and knew they could up charge them like crazy and Tesla up charged the guy even more.
I'm a roofer and no you cannot determine the plywood from the attic. Please research delamination. I think they should have contacted you during the build, but you should be happy they didn't just leave the bad wood
Considering this install took place in the height of a pandemic, in California..I was very impressed by the overall efficiency of the work/lack of significant delays . Great job documenting!

Awesome video, I have taught myself solar over the past year, and have been slowing installing testing. Then realizing I needed more and expanding. My system is 90 500w bifacial panels, two 12kw inverters, 3 120amp charge controllers, 3 4p16s batteries little over 150kwh of storage had to make all my own busbars. The tesla roof looks very nice compared to my large industrial panels. But diy for me was order of magnitudes cheaper.

Just had to say GREAT overall video with a really good job on showing a NUMBER of critical details (across the board from purchasing, construction, through power creation and management. The payback portion being the smallest yet for many the largest in importance. Thank you for your time... effort... filming... editing... Openness... and all the rest. Kudos to all of the contractors in letting you film and being ok with it. To their (especially necessary due to filming) attention to safety and (i assume) quality control as well as openness being video'd (that's a really big deal if you didn't already know). Anyway, thanks again, and I hope you do yearly updates to show people (especially those of us TRULY interested and not just curious) on how well it goes.
Greatings from Germany. This is fascinating to see. We got solar on our roof here in Germany last year. It was a 9.1kW installation of classic solar. It took 2 guys, 2 days to install it all on the roof and 2 guy for half a day for the electric installation in the house. The Tesla one looks good, but the amount of time and ppl was unimaginable for me. This is not only because of the Tesla solar though. The roof construction and electrical installation is so different and looks so much more complicated than what we do over here.

Fantastic video! Hands down the best I’ve seen on CZcams over the last two years. Anyone interested in the Solar Roof needs to watch this to know what to expect. My Tesla Solar Panel project was similar in the process, but luckily much quicker in the permit approval processes. I ordered in April 2019, installed in July in one day, then finally approved to connect by the Utility in late August. Looking forward to the updates!
When I noticed that the video time was nearly an hour and I usually limit myself to 8-12 minutes, I was surprised that you lulled me into watching the entire thing and, I enjoy your presentation...good job.
Traditional solar installer here. Looks real nice, way cleaner than regular panels. I hope Tesla releases a version available to us, or another company develops a high quality solution. It was pretty cool when they released the power walls, the company i work for installs them. A big development in this kind of system would be a micro inverter. They basically handle all the DC to AC right under the panel, and have wireless communications with a central controller to do rapid shutdown, alert you in case a panel has a problem, etc. Eliminates the need for DC disconnects on the side of the building, and can be much safer in the event of a fire in systems without rapid shutdown units on the panels. but getting one under those tiles sounds like a challenge due to their size. Also, you will have to charge the batteries through AC coupling instead of DC coupling which may be less efficient. As the technology gets smaller, better and cheaper i’m sure it will happen. They also had a crazy amount of ropes up there. They can get pretty dangerous when you step on one and slip. Usually the only times we have ropes on the roof is when it’s an extreme slope, a metal roof, or we have a new guy who is not yet comfortable. It is dangerous, but not as much as having a bunch of lines up there. Especially when there is massive amounts of slack hanging everywhere on the part of the rope that is supposed to catch you, like I saw some of in this video. They were not moving around as quickly or a lot like the roofers were, who did not all have safety lines. looks like those tesla roofs take an extremely long time to install compared to traditional systems. Make me wonder if the program is even making profit due to the insane amount of labor costs they must have had.
Thanks for the ride-along! Very well done. I am currently building a new home in Los Angeles County that will have a conventional (panels) roof-top 5.8 Kwh solar system. For everyone's information: The total cost for materials (panels, mounting equipment, inverter but NO battery) is $8,547. It will have 17 Q-Cell 340W panels at a cost of $198 each. The panel cost accounts for about 40% of the total cost...the invoice lists 14 other items. The supplier suggested I wait on a battery as he believes costs will be coming down and it'll be about four months until the home is completed. As for going with conventional panels, a lot of effort is being put into making this a true, authentic old Spanish house so we are using a tile roof (the solar will look like a recent upgrade of an old structure). The order was placed May 4, 2021. I did an upgrade on the inverter, which boosted the cost about $1,000. My electrician will do the installation at a labor cost that probably won't exceed $5k. If I was building a conventional house I would definitely give the Tesla roof a very strong look. Your financial analysis followed by your consumption analysis is really helpful!
I wonder what was included in the prices. Right now the price for plywood is about $1.5/sq ft. So $2500 seems a lot. Especially since clearing the roof was already in the main price. I wonder if they did it at cost or included their profit margins.
@@Lordp00m To firstly clarify they didn't install plywood, they used OSB sheeting(the already installed kinda looked like ply but what Tesla installed wasn't), But overall it's pretty cheap pricing, when you look at your local costs sure it seems steep but not if you look generally. Where i'm from in England it costs around £1.40 for the really cheap stuff, which in usd is around $2/ft2 or $2000 for his roof job, so i can imagine California during prime time covid being way more expensive, then you add labour and transport costs on top of that too.
What an outstanding video. Very informative. Thank you. I am *not* getting a Tesla roof, primarily because I have a great, solid, viable roof (cement tile), but in your case, it certainly made financial sense. The only thing that bugs me about the Tesla roofs is the inability to know whether any of your producing tiles have gone bad. How do you know if one of your solar tiles shorts out? Or ten for that matter? Other than seeing a decrease in solar production, is there any way to isolate problem tiles? Also, how long are they rated to keep producing energy for you at a rate of 90% or better from their original installation date?
It's so spectacular seeing the whole progress of this project! This is not an option for my current home-location yet, but this is something my household is talking about for the future when it becomes available. There was thins one question that was in my head throughout the length of the video though; When you say sending electricity "back to the grid", does this mean that your solar energy sends back excess energy to the grid powering other households near you? I'm not sure if I managed to understand that at first, but if that IS the case, it sounds like this system helps so incredibly much more than just for your personal household. Amazing where the future is taking us.

Hearing about how Tesla handled the trash inconvenience at 35:08 honestly made me want to support them going forward. Noticing the little things and fixing problems that you create before anyone complains says something about a large corporation.
I was doing an school assignment on Tesla marketing. And I came across your other Tesla video in your other channel and then came to this video. Now I’m thinking about thing this to my new built in my land. We wanted the traditional solar panels but this looks kind of cool. Great video btw. Had to quickly finish my assignment so I could return to this video.
I love that they installed it on the 1 of 6 days it rains in California lol. He is telling the truth though. The cost of wood did double because of the pandemic which sucked bad.
The costs of the wood did not double because of the pandamic, but because money is so cheap which urges people to construct new houses or to refurbish old ones.
@@0bled121 Do you mean effect or affect? The support schemes to fight the economic down turn pushed money into the market and made interest rates very low (including slightly negative). That means money is available for investments which would be questionable if the overal interest rates would be a few percent higher.
Agreeing this was an excellent presentation. Surprised and pleased to know you may not have much more sun than I do with our trees, yet the system works as hoped. If I thought we’d be here long enough, this would be worth considering. ( At age 75, the math won’t work. We built this house in 1983 and this should’ve been done years ago.).
Telsa making sure the community trash/recycling was taken care of because the city missed due to construction vehicles blocking the path to the bins, is excellence customer service, and an oversight for many other companies out there. Well done.
I know this is a bit too late, but another reasonably simple option to greatly increase the available space for tiles would have been to build over the valley between the two surfaces without tiles by extending each surface so they planed together, forming a hip where the previous valley was located. This could have been done with what is known as a fill package. This would have increased the square footage of both surfaces.
I can't wait until other companies offer similar roof materials and solar panel systems to make them more competitive and give more options like different colors because here in south Louisiana we have a ton of heat so a white roof would do much better to reflect the heat instead of absorb it. I would love this type of roof.
Thought I’d insert a comment as I’m only half way through the video, considering it was done before during and post pandemic lockdowns I’d still impressed by how Tesla handle the process, accepting suggestions by you and “your construction guy” 😂. I bet looking back now some of the surprise delays are less a little less surprising now, the city seemed to make more delays than the pandemic or Tesla supply delays. I’m impressed by the system they use, specialised teams that come and get their part done making it smoother for the next team to complete their job and so on. I wish we had the same kind of incentives in the UK to help people make use of solar more, as it’s still very expensive here and I’d love to get solar in advance of an EV. Now, I mean no offense here, but prior to this I didn't know you from Adam (random suggestion from "The Algorithm"), and, not to put too fine a point on it, I couldn't have cared less about the subject matter when I idly glanced at it. And here it is an hour later. And I watched the whole damn thing. INTERESTED. *Hey Tesla!* You could do a lot worse than pointing people considering an install here. Even with the trials and tribulations, those actually legitimized the whole process - to me at least; I've NEVER had a major renovation go without a hitch - and served to add pathos to the process (as opposed to reading like BS marketing fluff). Outstanding work, this guy. fan-freaking-tastic usage of your drone(s) too. Seriously, man... my ghast is more than a bit flabbered that you managed to get this level of production quality into getting a bloody roof (albeit, a badass, high-tech one) installed. Well. Done. At about 28:00 you mention how the $3,800 for sheathing, facia, etc., should have been in the quote. Actually, it was in the very first quote. It was under Pre-Construction (Roof Prep), as you mention at 15:27. Taking that out of the second and subsequent quotes was Tesla's mistake. Easy to forget, I'm sure, after so many months from quote to installation. Overall it's a great video. The drone shots added a lot, being able to see the progress from an aerial point of view. This is so cool to learn. I have not heard of this before. Just so happened to see your title of the video. I am interested in Tesla, but have no way of ever getting a car or a roof. However I watched all of your videos and loved them. Please keep making them.
My solar roof just recently got installed. They had to change the construction document to match what was actually installed. I just got word today that they've corrected the permit and they should be submitting it soon. So hopefully in the next month or so, I'll be able to turn my system on. Can't wait! I also requested that they add your referral code to my order. For some reason, I never considered using a referral code for this order, but they said it isn't too late and they've requested that it be added. My experience so far has been pretty close to yours, except my house is pretty new, so they didn't have any problems with the tear off and dry-in. I also requested a larger system than the original design, but way before the install started.

@@0623kaboom ehh, hard to say. The math on solar has many thumbs on the scale right now. The government grants are huge, and utilities are often forced to buy solar at rates that aren't market determined. All this works essentially as a lost litre to prime the market with early adopters. The question is how and will these subsidies scale with the solar market? It's hard to imagine they can scale 1:1, eventually the promotion ends and regular prices arrive. All that being said I'm actually more interested in a proper comparison between solar tile and solar panel. He was very cagey about the comparison and I feel like he had zero interest in actually purchasing a conventional roof with panels. It was probably Tesla or nothing and the comparison shopping was just for the narrative. Conventional panels should have a denser solar area and they can overhang the hips which limit solar tile. I wouldn't need surprised if the PV area is double with panels. Course now it's even more complicated with Tesla closing the market on powerwall, though I haven't heard why, it might just be temporary due to shortages. But it's not the first time Tesla did some anti-competitive shit like this.
@Scrub Dog well to be fair he needed a new roof one way or another. But yeah I'm guessing he's playing all sorts of games with the numbers. Like there's no way his Tesla roof is the same capacity as panels, and if you let the panels overhang the hips because they can do that the panels will utterly trash the solar tiles for PV area. Plus panels aren't forced to accept the roof pitch. Additionally my assumption is the government solar credits aren't going to last forever, it's more seed money for early adopters. Furthermore solar gets to sell to the grid for inflated prices. When in reality power grids are actually damaged by unregulated power. There's no affordable way to make consumer grade PV regulated for the power grid. Long story short as more and more people integrate PV into their homes the less incentives will be tolerated. The solution is solar neighbourhoods, basically micro grids of a few streets, and when the solar is going the main grid disconnects. Batteries get recharged and most people aren't home during peak Sun so the housewives that are use the shared grid to do laundry and such without depleting any batteries.
@@jeremyO9F911O2 in my area (not US), there are regulations that you need a space to walk around the solar pannels. I can't remember if it's 18 or 24", mainly so firefighters have an arrea to walk without slipping. So overhanging the pannels would not pass the inspection. But I got 9.6Kw professionally installed for 17K Canadian. It's a lot more affordable, but the monitoring solution from Fronius sucks big time compared to Tesla.
What a fantastic documentary. I own a solar panel installation company here in Brazil. I was very curious on how it all work in the US and of course how the Tesla roof would be. Here in Brazil the city does not interfere. It is all up to the Electrical company to approve and to inspect. Anyhow great video Sven and thanks!
Their underlayment looks like their own branded ice and water shield... its over 100% of the roof. The roof needs to breathe or you will get dry rot. You should only use I&W shield around penetrations, in valleys, anywhere the roof meets a wall and in NY you need it to extend 3' into the living space from the gutter.
I love how this pays for itself in the long run. The crew also seemed incredibly nice, picking up trash and explaining their work very diligently. Seems like the city was right the first time they rejected the roof. Were the reasons for the other rejections valid? Or was that simply a denial because the city is trying to stop the advancement of renewables? Did you ever find out?
How much energy does he produces on average a day? about worth 2 $ (?) costs of 32,000 for the installation (skipping the 18k for the new roof) / 2$ = 16,000 days to reach breakeven. That is 43 years assuming that nothing changes. The panels will loose performance and therefore the house needs renovation before the breakeven is reached.
I think you've missed the amount he "earns" by not paying out to the electricity companies. In the video, he says it pays for itself through savings within 2 decades. With the contribution you've calculated I suppose its even quicker. Also he hasn't seen how much energy he'll put in at the peak of summer.
@@sullyh1034 not only that.. If I'm to understand correctly, the power given to the grid will be be at afternoon time(peak time)... So the amount due to him from the electric company will be at 3 times the regular rate.. hence he'll be earning more by giving to the grid the same amount of power...

I have solar panels & one latest generation Tesla battery & I’ve been using no power from the grid at all. We had a 19 hour blackout as a result of wild winds. The system performed flawlessly.
I am a roofer and all rotten wood replacement is cost plus that's an industry standard. However they should have noted the 2x6 deck in the inspection. The price was super fair, plywood was crazy at the time.
No idea how I'm so late to this vid, but here I am hoping that Tesla has taken notes about how to improve their service as a result of this project. I get the impression they're very much in the early stages of developing this business line and each project should bring great knowledge to their planners/designers. Hope you're really happy with this roof, it looks fantastic.
You know the one thing that would probably most help California's wild fires is good forest management. The added bonus is the brushwood collected could be used for brown energy/biofuels.
@@GeorgeMonet Good forest management as in making causeways in trees to prevent fires from jumping from one section to a next. Cleaning up some bracken and deadwood, and using it for bio-digesters or turned into wood pellets.

As an architect a +7% on initial budget for rehabilitative work is quite common, we usually tell the client to have a +/-15% budget error range especially in long works (not your case tho)

In islanding mode, what happens if the batteries are empty? Do you have priorized circuits that are kept energized, while not so important ones are disconnected e.g. by under-frequency or under-voltage protection?
I think he might be misusing the completely off grid because his solar is overproducing by 100-120% of what they use. So yes it’s off grid because they give back more than they take, but technically they are only off grid for 60-70% of the time. Meaning the solar powers the home in the day and the powerwalls for some of the night. He then switched back to grid power around midnight or something.

In an island you can't import ancilliary services such as frequency and voltage stabilisation, but you have to do all these task by the local assets. It is doable, no quetion, but more expensive than just only producing power.

Hi This Guys Tesla, just wanted to say what an excellent video you have created, and i am really impressed with the installation and finishing . I myself am based in the UK and use solar PV myself. Is their any requirements in the United States to install insulation/ double or triple glazing/ energy efficient appliances and lighting to improve the energy efficiency of your properties/homes prior to installing. In the UK you need to meet a minimum energy efficiency level in order to be able to receive a feed in tariff. Just asking as it would be interesting to compare. Wishing you every success with your system.

Seems like you could have had 1 or 2 more power walls as your solar charged then up really quick (in winter low sun conditions, not bad really)
but from the bit right at the end you seems to suggest the two power walls are able to keep you off grid overnight on battery power so guess 1-2 more not needed (unless you got another tesla car I guess)

I'm a roofer for 17 years now. I own my own business. It's really sad when the sheeting is missed like this. The inspector should've caught it. But I want you to know those prices are really fair. That is extra $3800 based on date of install was extremely fair. They didn't price gouge on that at all.

Thank you for posting this video. This is one of the most comprehensive videos I’ve ever seen that walks prospective customers through the whole purchase process. This is something that I would love to do with my house someday when we’re able to afford it.
Agree with the word ‘comprehensive’ for sure. If anyone ever needed to know the ins and outs of the entire process, it’s very well laid out here. Of course these projects are complex, the paperwork, the timings, the surprises, all need to be anticipated and overcome, and that’s what the video demonstrates. And as another comment posted…all without any complaints! That’s the way to do it.

I'm actually really impressed that the city did the calculation and denied your permit initially because the panels weren't sufficient to utilize both batteries. I'm 99% certain my city's permit office would have neither noticed nor cared if there were such a discrepancy in my plan.
I can tell you my city would have either stared glossy eyes at the plans all the while asking each other what the heck a Tasla roof was, or simply give the the OK just to keep the ball rolling.
They care on your behalf, so you won't have to take responsibility. The cost of caring for you like that, is what you pay extra in taxes. Bonus: You don't get to decide for yourself.

My takeaway from this video is be professional and nice. I love it how the Tesla roof team emptyed the trash cans of the street. When that guy said we use A+ contractors that's why our prices may be higher, well he wasn't kidding. Those guys are so incredibly professional and well mannered to take away the trash like that. 👍

A normal 6KW solar roof system connected with the grid costs me around 5k here in India. It doesn't stores the power as it's connected with the grid with a bidirectional energy meter. I am happy that I have reduced my bill to zero by producing bit more than what I consume and carbon footprint as well. Thanks for sharing this video. Hopefully we have this technology available one day in India too at a reasonable price.
The price hike for extra things that need to be done are usual on older houses. No one gives you a quote for what they think will need to done once the roof is taken off. You never know what you will find. That's true with any old house no matter what you do.

Awesome video, I have taught myself solar over the past year, and have been slowing installing testing. Then realizing I needed more and expanding. My system is 90 500w bifacial panels, two 12kw inverters, 3 120amp charge controllers, 3 4p16s batteries little over 150kwh of storage had to make all my own busbars. The tesla roof looks very nice
compared to my large industrial panels. But diy for me was order of magnitudes
cheaper.

Just had to say GREAT overall video with a really good job on showing a NUMBER of critical details (across the board from purchasing, construction, through power creation and management. The payback portion being the smallest yet for many the largest in importance. Thank you for your time... effort... filming... editing... Openness... and all the rest. Kudos to all of the contractors in letting you film and being ok with it. To their (especially necessary due to filming) attention to safety and (i assume) quality control as well as openness being video'd (that's a really big deal if you didn't already know). We got solar on our roof here in Germany last year. It was a 9.1kW installation of classic solar. It took 2 guys, 2 days to install it all on the roof and 2 guy for half a day for the electric installation in the house.
The Tesla one looks good, but the amount of time and ppl was unimaginable for me.
This is not only because of the Tesla solar though. The roof construction and electrical installation is so different and looks so much more complicated than what we do over here.

Fantastic video! Hands down the best I’ve seen on CZcams over the last two years. Anyone interested in the Solar Roof needs to watch this to know what to expect. My Tesla Solar Panel project was similar in the process, but luckily much quicker in the permit approval processes. I ordered in April 2019, installed in July in one day, then finally approved to connect by the Utility in late August. Looking forward to the updates!
When I noticed that the video time was nearly an hour and I usually limit myself to 8-12 minutes, I was surprised that you lulled me into watching the entire thing and, I enjoy your presentation...good job.
Traditional solar installer here. Looks real nice, way cleaner than regular panels. I hope Tesla releases a version available to us, or another company develops a high quality solution. It was pretty cool when they released the power walls, the company i work for installs them.
A big development in this kind of system would be a micro inverter. They basically handle all the DC to AC right under the panel, and have wireless communications with a central controller to do rapid shutdown, alert you in case a panel has a problem, etc. Eliminates the need for DC disconnects on the side of the building, and can be much safer in the event of a fire in systems without rapid shutdown units on the panels. but getting one under those tiles sounds like a challenge due to their size. Also, you will have to charge the batteries through AC coupling instead of DC coupling which may be less efficient. As the technology gets smaller, better and cheaper i’m sure it will happen.
They also had a crazy amount of ropes up there. They can get pretty dangerous when you step on one and slip. Usually the only times we have ropes on the roof is when it’s an extreme slope, a metal roof, or we have a new guy who is not yet comfortable. It is dangerous, but not as much as having a bunch of lines up there. Especially when there is massive amounts of slack hanging everywhere on the part of the rope that is supposed to catch you, like I saw some of in this video. They were not moving around as quickly or a lot like the roofers were, who did not all have safety lines. looks like those tesla roofs take an extremely long time to install compared to traditional systems. Make me wonder if the program is even making profit due to the insane amount of labor costs they must have had.
Thanks for the ride-along! Very well done. I am currently building a new home in Los Angeles County that will have a conventional (panels) roof-top 5.8 Kwh solar system. For everyone's information: The total cost for materials (panels, mounting equipment, inverter but NO battery) is $8,547. It will have 17 Q-Cell 340W panels at a cost of $198 each. The panel cost accounts for about 40% of the total cost...the invoice lists 14 other items. The supplier suggested I wait on a battery as he believes costs will be coming down and it'll be about four months until the home is completed. As for going with conventional panels, a lot of effort is being put into making this a true, authentic old Spanish house so we are using a tile roof (the solar will look like a recent upgrade of an old structure). The order was placed May 4, 2021. I did an upgrade on the inverter, which boosted the cost about $1,000. My electrician will do the installation at a labor cost that probably won't exceed $5k. If I was building a conventional house I would definitely give the Tesla roof a very strong look. Your financial analysis followed by your consumption analysis is really helpful!

I wonder what was included in the prices. Right now the price for plywood is about $1.5/sq ft. So $2500 seems a lot. Especially since clearing the roof was already in the main price. I wonder if they did it at cost or included their profit margins.

But overall it's pretty cheap pricing, when you look at your local costs sure it seems steep but not if you look generally. Where i'm from in England it costs around £1.40 for the really cheap stuff, which in usd is around $2/ft2 or $2000 for his roof job, so i can imagine California during prime time covid being way more expensive, then you add labour and transport costs on top of that too.

What an outstanding video. Very informative. Thank you. I am *not* getting a Tesla roof, primarily because I have a great, solid, viable roof (cement tile), but in your case, it certainly made financial sense. The only thing that bugs me about the Tesla roofs is the inability to know whether any of your producing tiles have gone bad. How do you know if one of your solar tiles shorts out? Or ten for that matter? Other than seeing a decrease in solar production, is there any way to isolate problem tiles? Also, how long are they rated to keep producing energy for you at a rate of 90% or better from their original installation date?
When I saw how many people who were installing it I then realized what they meant with professional-quality.
It's so spectacular seeing the whole progress of this project! This is not an option for my current home-location yet, but this is something my household is talking about for the future when it becomes available. There was thins one question that was in my head throughout the length of the video though; When you say sending electricity "back to the grid", does this mean that your solar energy sends back excess energy to the grid powering other households near you? I'm not sure if I managed to understand that at first, but if that IS the case, it sounds like this system helps so incredibly much more than just for your personal household.

The cost of plywood doubling is true. Helped my dad renovate his room back in April 2020 and all lumber had already gone up by 100-200%.

The support schemes to fight the economic down turn pushed money into the market and made interest rates very low (including slightly negative). That means money is available for investments which would be questionable if the overal interest rates would be a few percent higher.

Agreeing this was an excellent presentation. Surprised and pleased to know you may not have much more sun than I do with our trees, yet the system works as hoped. If I thought we’d be here long enough, this would be worth considering. ( At age 75, the math won’t work. We built this house in 1983 and this should’ve been done years ago.).
Telsa making sure the community trash/recycling was taken care of because the city missed due to construction vehicles blocking the path to the bins, is excellence customer service, and an oversight for many other companies out there. Well done.
I know this is a bit too late, but another reasonably simple option to greatly increase the available space for tiles would have been to build over the valley between the two surfaces without tiles by extending each surface so they planed together, forming a hip where the previous valley was located. This could have been done with what is known as a fill package. This would have increased the square footage of both surfaces.
And under that you get a terrace , or you can add an extra room to the house right? Very clever
I can't wait until other companies offer similar roof materials and solar panel systems to make them more competitive and give more options like different colors because here in south Louisiana we have a ton of heat so a white roof would do much better to reflect the heat instead of absorb it. I would love this type of roof.

Thought I’d insert a comment as I’m only half way through the video, considering it was done before during and post pandemic lockdowns I’d still impressed by how Tesla handle the process, accepting suggestions by you and “your construction guy” 😂. I bet looking back now some of the surprise delays are less a little less surprising now, the city seemed to make more delays than the pandemic or Tesla supply delays. I’m impressed by the system they use, specialised teams that come and get their part done making it smoother for the next team to complete their job and so on.
I wish we had the same kind of incentives in the UK to help people make use of solar more, as it’s still very expensive here and I’d love to get solar in advance of an EV.

Brother, you are a badass videographer, video editor, and director! I'm on CZcams Pro (so no ads) and this seriously watched like a Discovery documentary. Now, I mean no offense here, but prior to this I didn't know you from Adam (random suggestion from "The Algorithm"), and, not to put too fine a point on it, I couldn't have cared less about the subject matter when I idly glanced at it. And here it is an hour later. And I watched the whole damn thing. INTERESTED.
*Hey Tesla!* You could do a lot worse than pointing people considering an install here. Even with the trials and tribulations, those actually legitimized the whole process - to me at least; I've NEVER had a major renovation go without a hitch - and served to add pathos to the process (as opposed to reading like BS marketing fluff). Outstanding work, this guy. fan-freaking-tastic usage of your drone(s) too. Seriously, man... my ghast is more than a bit flabbered that you managed to get this level of production quality into getting a bloody roof (albeit, a badass, high-tech one) installed.

At about 28:00 you mention how the $3,800 for sheathing, facia, etc., should have been in the quote. Actually, it was in the very first quote. It was under Pre-Construction (Roof Prep), as you mention at 15:27. Taking that out of the second and subsequent quotes was Tesla's mistake. Easy to forget, I'm sure, after so many months from quote to installation.
Overall it's a great video. The drone shots added a lot, being able to see the progress from an aerial point of view. Thanks!

This is so cool to learn. I have not heard of this before. Just so happened to see your title of the video. I am interested in Tesla, but have no way of ever getting a car or a roof. However I watched all of your videos and loved them. Please keep making them.
My solar roof just recently got installed. They had to change the construction document to match what was actually installed. I just got word today that they've corrected the permit and they should be submitting it soon. So hopefully in the next month or so, I'll be able to turn my system on. Can't wait! I also requested that they add your referral code to my order. For some reason, I never considered using a referral code for this order, but they said it isn't too late and they've requested that it be added.
My experience so far has been pretty close to yours, except my house is pretty new, so they didn't have any problems with the tear off and dry-in. I also requested a larger system than the original design, but way before the install started.
All this means to me is that such roofs make sense for a new house and a fancy one at that. Otherwise I’d go for panels.
Yeah this roof layout was less than ideal for solar. Ideally you design the roof to maximise South facing surface area.
@@jeremyO9F911O2 that is the best part he has a worst case scenario roof ... and he is paying it back fast ... shows that solar does work ... now to get manufacturers to switch to DC home appliances to work with them and further reduce the costs ...
@@0623kaboom ehh, hard to say. The math on solar has many thumbs on the scale right now. The government grants are huge, and utilities are often forced to buy solar at rates that aren't market determined.
All this works essentially as a lost litre to prime the market with early adopters. The question is how and will these subsidies scale with the solar market? It's hard to imagine they can scale 1:1, eventually the promotion ends and regular prices arrive.
All that being said I'm actually more interested in a proper comparison between solar tile and solar panel. He was very cagey about the comparison and I feel like he had zero interest in actually purchasing a conventional roof with panels. It was probably Tesla or nothing and the comparison shopping was just for the narrative. Conventional panels should have a denser solar area and they can overhang the hips which limit solar tile. I wouldn't need surprised if the PV area is double with panels. Course now it's even more complicated with Tesla closing the market on powerwall, though I haven't heard why, it might just be temporary due to shortages. But it's not the first time Tesla did some anti-competitive shit like this.
@Scrub Dog well to be fair he needed a new roof one way or another. But yeah I'm guessing he's playing all sorts of games with the numbers. Like there's no way his Tesla roof is the same capacity as panels, and if you let the panels overhang the hips because they can do that the panels will utterly trash the solar tiles for PV area. Plus panels aren't forced to accept the roof pitch.
Additionally my assumption is the government solar credits aren't going to last forever, it's more seed money for early adopters. Furthermore solar gets to sell to the grid for inflated prices. When in reality power grids are actually damaged by unregulated power. There's no affordable way to make consumer grade PV regulated for the power grid. Long story short as more and more people integrate PV into their homes the less incentives will be tolerated.
The solution is solar neighbourhoods, basically micro grids of a few streets, and when the solar is going the main grid disconnects. Batteries get recharged and most people aren't home during peak Sun so the housewives that are use the shared grid to do laundry and such without depleting any batteries.
@@jeremyO9F911O2 in my area (not US), there are regulations that you need a space to walk around the solar pannels. I can't remember if it's 18 or 24", mainly so firefighters have an arrea to walk without slipping.
So overhanging the pannels would not pass the inspection.
But I got 9.6Kw professionally installed for 17K Canadian. It's a lot more affordable, but the monitoring solution from Fronius sucks big time compared to Tesla.

What a fantastic documentary. I own a solar panel installation company here in Brazil. I was very curious on how it all work in the US and of course how the Tesla roof would be.
Here in Brazil the city does not interfere. It is all up to the Electrical company to approve and to inspect.

Their underlayment looks like their own branded ice and water shield... its over 100% of the roof. The roof needs to breathe or you will get dry rot. You should only use I&W shield around penetrations, in valleys, anywhere the roof meets a wall and in NY you need it to extend 3' into the living space from the gutter.
I love how this pays for itself in the long run. The crew also seemed incredibly nice, picking up trash and explaining their work very diligently.
Seems like the city was right the first time they rejected the roof. Were the reasons for the other rejections valid? Or was that simply a denial because the city is trying to stop the advancement of renewables? Did you ever find out?
i mean.. a shame the tiles wont last longer than a decade. but yeah. pays for itself.

costs of 32,000 for the installation (skipping the 18k for the new roof) / 2$ = 16,000 days to reach breakeven. That is 43 years assuming that nothing changes.
The panels will loose performance and therefore the house needs renovation before the breakeven is reached.
I think you've missed the amount he "earns" by not paying out to the electricity companies. In the video, he says it pays for itself through savings within 2 decades. With the contribution you've calculated I suppose its even quicker. Also he hasn't seen how much energy he'll put in at the peak of summer.
@@sullyh1034 not only that.. If I'm to understand correctly, the power given to the grid will be be at afternoon time(peak time)... So the amount due to him from the electric company will be at 3 times the regular rate.. hence he'll be earning more by giving to the grid the same amount of power...

I have solar panels & one latest generation Tesla battery & I’ve been using no power from the grid at all. We had a 19 hour blackout as a result of wild winds. The system performed flawlessly.
I am a roofer and all rotten wood replacement is cost plus that's an industry standard. However they should have noted the 2x6 deck in the inspection. The price was super fair, plywood was crazy at the time.
No idea how I'm so late to this vid, but here I am hoping that Tesla has taken notes about how to improve their service as a result of this project. I get the impression they're very much in the early stages of developing this business line and each project should bring great knowledge to their planners/designers.

You know the one thing that would probably most help California's wild fires is good forest management. The added bonus is the brushwood collected could be used for brown energy/biofuels.

@@GeorgeMonet Good forest management as in making causeways in trees to prevent fires from jumping from one section to a next. Cleaning up some bracken and deadwood, and using it for bio-digesters or turned into wood pellets.

This is absolutely the best video I've watched regarding a Tesla roof install. Thank you for taking us on the entire journey from your initial click on purchasing, through the delays, roadblocks, installation, power integration and steady state running of the system. Truly exceptional content in this video. This has inspired me to look into purchasing and setting up a system of my own ...my major roadblock is that I need a house.

As an architect a +7% on initial budget for rehabilitative work is quite common, we usually tell the client to have a +/-15% budget error range especially in long works (not your case tho)

im still having it now. there is no way those tiles are lasting more than ten years. and unfortunately these people are goign to be on the hook for payign for something that no longer works. a more traditional style of solar panel at least is cheaper to replace once the panels themselves have begun togo bad. because they are on their own 9infrastructure that can jsut be plugged back into.

49:16 "Completely off grid" - Meaning the microgrid switch is open and the house is in island mode or that no power flow is consumed from the grid? In islanding mode, what happens if the batteries are empty? Do you have priorized circuits that are kept energized, while not so important ones are disconnected e.g. by under-frequency or under-voltage protection?
I think he might be misusing the completely off grid because his solar is overproducing by 100-120% of what they use. So yes it’s off grid because they give back more than they take, but technically they are only off grid for 60-70% of the time. Meaning the solar powers the home in the day and the powerwalls for some of the night. He then switched back to grid power around midnight or something.

@@woohooivan It is not only the power balance regarding the true island mode. In an island you can't import ancilliary services such as frequency and voltage stabilisation, but you have to do all these task by the local assets. It is doable, no quetion, but more expensive than just only producing power.
