Or like Scrubs with the little musical twang to mark the punchline of a joke. Community's joke delivery is so great because it just lets the humour speak for itself rather than trying to signpost when to laugh.
Harmon talks about it on the DVD. He finds parks and rec, office etc funny, of course. But they can set up a joke and just have the next scene be someone explain the joke to the camera, or vice versa. That's why Abed refers to documentary film making as "shooting fish in a barrel" in the Pierce dying episode
