  • In this video, we closely examine two popular washing machines: the GE model GTW335ASNWW and the Amana NTW4516FW. As a service technician, I have experience working on both models and know their common component failures. I compare these failures and share my recommendations on which washing machine is more reliable and efficient. I also discuss the features and performance of each machine, so you can make an informed decision when purchasing a new washing machine. Whether you're in the market for a new appliance or just curious about the differences between these two models, this video is a must-watch for anyone considering an Amana or GE washing machine.

    The issues you highlighted with both machines were spot on the center of the nail. For a while I ran into more GE machines with malfunctioning lid locks then any other brand, until machines with the three wire Whirlpool locks begin to come into my shop. @davestvwatching2408 the amana 4516 has a true, dual action agitator and is significantly better at cleaning clothes than those front load LG's. It will also FILL with water. Most top loaders these days just have an impeller with a pole on it and the pole does absolutely nothing to agitate. In that case, the LG front load is better.

    • @HarperandKnowles
      @HarperandKnowles  Před 5 měsíci

      On that dryer only the front side of the drum can contact your clothes and cause this. Usually the metal lip that runs on the drum glides has worn through and separated from the drum part of the way around. You might be able to feel this with your fingers but beware, this will be very sharp. When the tub has worn this badly a machine like this will end up in my bone yard. It’s cheaper to replace it. It could be that something is just caught between the drum and the bearing (large plastic piece that holds the glides on the front) and is catching your clothes. I’m glad you liked my video. • @HarperandKnowles
      @HarperandKnowles  Před 5 měsíci

      I’m not big on buying extended warranties. I’m not exactly sure of what they cover but most of my customers who have purchased them regretted doing so. That’s why they call me. I found this on the web “Washers and dryers: Consumer Reports found that 20% of washing machines and 16% of dryers broke or stopped working over a 10-year span. That rate is lower than other major appliances, meaning you should feel safe skipping the extended warranty here. That said, it’s up to every homeowner to decide what appliances they want coverage on.” Speaking strictly for myself, I wouldn’t do it.

    • @HarperandKnowles
      @HarperandKnowles  Před rokem +1

      t sounds like you might be experiencing an issue with your washer's lid switch or latch mechanism. The lid switch or latch is a safety feature that prevents the washing machine from operating when the lid is open. If it's not functioning correctly, the washer might not start or pause during the cycle, as it's not detecting that the lid is closed.
      To help diagnose the issue, first, check for any visible damage or debris around the lid switch or latch area. If you don't see any physical damage, the lid switch or latch itself might be faulty and need replacement.
      Before doing any repairs, please ensure that you unplug the washing machine from the power source. You failed to tell me which machine you have but you can check these videos to learn how to diagnose your problem. czcams.com/video/M6EQUP4iTHM/video.html or czcams.com/video/jsBtbH8EhYg/video.html. If you're not comfortable performing the repair yourself, consider contacting a professional appliance technician for assistance.

      @@HarperandKnowles Crosley is an old name we used to have a dealer that sold Crosley appliances and RCA televisions. Later on they Sylvania TVs. They used to have an ad on the radio that Crosley had the first patent for refrigerator shelves in the door. I live in a small town. When I bought my first washer we had four places that sold appliances. Now we're down to 2. In 1992 I bought my first washer. I ordered a $419 GE washer in the Sears catalog store. I put it on my Sears card at 0% financing for 12 months. I thought I won the lottery because they substituted it for a $600 1993 model. It's been a good washer. Although I was told to scrap it in 1998. I had a rebuilt transmission put in it in 1998 because it was leaking oil. In 2002, it had a malfunction and I replaced the clamp where the freshwater goes into the drum. It was getting pin holes in the outer drum. I removed all the rust and plugged the holes with JB weld. I replaced the enamel coating with JB Weld in certain areas. The outer drum is still holding up. However, my transmission is leaking oil again, and my timer is getting too hard to turn. I recently put a new knop on the timer and it still has events where it doesn't want to turn. I have learned to just use the next cycle on the timer because it beats going to the laundromat. It will jam up on the very top. If I let the timer move into the next position it frees up. The last appliance store left in town sells Frigidaire/Electrolux. Oddly they sell Hotpoint washers and dryers. Our Ace Hardware started selling Whirlpool appliances although they have a lot of young people working there. That's another story...

The washer stopped working within 11 months - thankfully within the “one year warranty”. A GE technician was dispatched to diagnose the issue - which according to him was “the cellar is too damp”. Seriously??? It’s a washing machine, ie HOLDS WATER IN IT. So okay, I bought a dehumidifier and what do you know, the washing machine now worked. But not for long. Flash forward to 6 months later and now the spin cycle fails to spin bulky items such as towels adequately. The dryer stopped heating up at the 18 month mark, rendering it absolutely useless and absolute garbage. I can say with all honesty that GE SUCKS and I’ll never spend one cent on a GE item again.
