    When I went through 3 front loaders in 9 years, a Kenmore, a whirlpool and an LG (the absolute worst of the 3) I walked into my local family owned appliance store and said “I’ve had it I want an old skool durable top loading machine” the owner of the store walked right me to a Speed Queen top loader. Best purchase I’ve ever made. 10 years later my Speed Queen pair is churning away and my clothes were never cleaner. I highly reccomend!

    My wife retired from an Assisted Living company and they do a lot of laundry every day. She said over the years “corporate” would dictate that all locations had to remove the washers they were using and replace them with whatever brand they got the best bulk deal on. She said typically the washers didn’t last out the year to 18 months. You get what you pay for. Eventually, they replaced their washers with Speed Queens and, when she retired, they had lasted twice as long as the others. When our 4 year old washer broke down for the third time, I won’t mention the brand, we got a Speed Queen. That was six years ago and we’ve never had a problem with it.

    • @HarperandKnowles
      @HarperandKnowles  Před rokem +11

      “Corporate” often tries to reinvent the wheel. Businesses that depend on reliable commercial machines usually wind up with machines made by Alliance Laundry Systems, the people who make Speed Queen.

    Nice video! We've had our Speedqueen washer and dryer since 2008 (15 yrs) and couldn't be happier. They don't shift around on the floor and the one time we had a problem, the washer was quickly and inexpensively fixed. The technician said he hardly ever got calls for Speedqueens and he was surprised by how easy it was to fix. One of the best decisions we've ever made when it comes to appliances.

    • @HarperandKnowles
      @HarperandKnowles  Před rokem +4

      I can testify to that too. I almost never get a call on a Speed Queen. I think only twice last year. Once the guy called and before I could get there he called back and said that his wife had forgotten she unplugged it to use the vacuum in the laundry room and the other time the lady’s circuit breaker was bad and needed replacing.

  • @caliberhomeinspectionsllc5914

    We bought the Speed Queen TC5 series and can't be happier. We go through about 5 loads a day and expect it to last a long time. My SQ TC5 was delivered a couple of weeks ago. It replaced my 12 year old Kenmore front load after the motor died. I felt my clothes never got as clean as they should in my front load, not to mention the constant bleach & water cleaning of the gaskets I had to do because of the mold buildup and mildewy smell. If true to the quality of the brand, this TC5 will be the last machine I'll ever have to buy -- it may even outlast me! I LOVE MY SPEED QUEEN!!!! The quality, durability and fresh-smelling clean laundry is well worth the extra expense.

      I respect your opinion, but as a technician, I have encountered a wide range of washing machines, including both top loaders and front loaders. While front loaders use a different washing mechanism, they have their benefits, including higher efficiency and water-saving capabilities. It's important to acknowledge that technology and design have evolved over the years, and front loaders have improved significantly since their introduction. Both types of machines can provide satisfactory results depending on individual needs and preferences. As a technician, my goal is to provide honest insights based on my experience with various appliances, and I believe each type of washer can have its advantages in different situations. Thanks for sharing your perspective, and I value the diversity of opinions in the appliance repair community.

    Agree! We bought our home in 1991 and when thinking of a washer and dryer, I just remembered all the Speed Queen equipment in Laundrymats and decided to get that equipment. The washer finally gave up after too many saddle and horse blankets blankets that threw the weight off too much. We did replace it with another Speed Queen. Just a couple years ago, the Gas Dryer drive motor finally quit after 30 plus years of reliable service. I did replace the rolling stock all of it about two times being the rollers and belt. I also replaced the igniter once. Beyond that we loved both machines. When the dryer went, it was during covid and we couldn't find a Speed Queen dryer anywhere so we went with another brand. Go with a Speed Queen, good equipment. We are still on the original heating and air system that this house was built with which is Trane but I service that twice a year to maintain it.

Having a dryer from the eighties still going strong is no small feat. Speed Queen's commitment to building reliable appliances is certainly evident in your experience. Thanks for sharing this, and for continuing the Speed Queen "American Made" legacy in your home!

    I own a Speed Queen TC 5 now for three years no problems yet. It replaced my forty year old Maytag that still looked like new but it major catastrophic failure. This is the only one that came close to the Maytag. All the others were flimsy junk including the new Maytags . The salesman even said all the major brands won’t last five years. So I bought the Speed Queen. Salesman said it was the only one that comes comes close to my forty plus years old Maytag. He told me a lot about all the manufacturers that I already knew and suspected.Btw I just came across your channel so I hit the sub. button

    I've had SQ's over 27 years, both Amana and Alliance. Just got the TR3, and really like it, and it is very quiet too. It washes fine, and is better with full loads like blankets.
    One weakness, as with any washer, is the main baring and seal. My 17 year old needs both, and can be DIY for under 150$. I like its old style timer. I plan on fixong it too. The Amana SQ also had seal failure after ten years. I have a working SQ wringer, and an older Amana SQ that I got at Good Will for 50$, it works fine. So I have four Speed Queens now. My mom had the original ME SQ from the 60s, it needed a drain pump. They're simple for DIY, better than anything else, except perhaps old school Maytags. Finding used SQ's are scarce, but avoid other used brands. Usually problems are user error or external. Our water flow was low, took too long to fill, and caused resets. Found out that we had lime scum in the supply valve and older hoses. Cleaned out the crusty stuff, and now it has 52# pressure that can fill 5 gals in 45 seconds, works great now.

However, it's important to note that these changes have been designed to improve the functionality and efficiency of their machines, without compromising the robust and durable construction Speed Queen is known for.

    I agree with pretty much all of the comments above. I'll be 75 this coming August and have some perspective on these things plus I have at one point, actually repaired washers and dryers. I've had many kinds and types of washers over the years from old world Kenmore and Speed Queen wringer washers, to high performance Kenmores - which I found to be no better than any of the other junk out there today. I've also had Maytag and Kenmore direct drives too - some of the most reliable washers ever built in America. But today, even with the high quality build of Speed Queens, there are a few features I'd change. First, make sure that the fill control (a rubber diaphragm behind the control panel) is adjusted before installation so that the tub can fill almost to the very top of the machine - this enables very large comforters and bedspreads to be washed easily with less strain on the components of the machine. Secondly, replace the digital controls of the cycles with the older style electro-mechanical timers - yes I know those things eventually die, but they are a heck of a lot less expensive to replace than most digital electronic control boards. Plus, you can stop or start a load at YOUR will, not the memory board's will. If you have a little think about it, in an atmosphere of moisture and detergents (whether it's liquid of powder) that can easily land of very sensitive contact points on a digital board and corrode them and make them fail - no matter how hard a manufacturer tries to isolate those boards from the environment. I also believe that if the spin speeds were increased even by 30%, drying time would be reduced drastically. And finally, (I know I'll hear comments later about this one but we all have our preferences) I like a machine to be able to rinse in warm water. From a physics standpoint, when you add heat to any system, it works faster and better. Yes I realize I'm being somewhat wasteful with water and the energy it takes to heat it, but washers that used to offer these options worked beautifully and cleaned clothes like a dream. And I also think it's a pity that Frigidaire washers(made by General Motors) are no longer available. Now there was a washer that had heft, designed to really clean clothes super well and strength. If they were around today with the added features of digital electronics they'd be just perfect. But alas, here in America corporate greed and avarice hand most of us mediocre products to satisfy stock buy backs, excessive salaries for executives and high returns for the stock holders.

    We have gone through 3 sets of washer/dryer combos in our new home since 2003. We bought a pair of Speed Queen’s (5000 series) in 3-1-2018. These are working flawlessly since purchasing. My wife’s biggest problem with the old was water level control, seems as if they always filled the water to the top. This washer was one of the few you could choose your own water level, and my wife does. We did have a problem with the dryer vent pipe and I removed one of the elbows that wasn’t needed, and I don’t use any pipe, except galvanized. Our vent pipe goes out 15’ with 2 elbows. We use a gas dryer. My wife loves this pair. Our old home we left a 23 year old Maytag pair. Each had one repair, washer, I changed the large seal below the drum and dryer the timer. Both were when units were 12 years old. Question….the dryer timer failed in the closed position, which meant that if it stayed on, the clothes would eventually catch fire or am I over thinking this? Great review! I've had several washers over the year. Most recently, a HUGE tug Samsung. Biggest mistake ever! Could not balance the load, wash knotted up and would not fill to to top when needed. I discovered the TR7 and the best purchase ever. Built like a tank, great warranty, and tons of options for wash cycles. People have to realize if you have filthy clothes, then you need to pre-spray, add a detergent enhancer, select a pre-soak option then an extended wash! This machine can hand any type of laundry from delicate to heavily soiled. The build quality of a Speed Queen is just amazing. Every time I put a load of wash in, I just smile. It's going to out live me at 66 years of age. Interestingly, it is amazing quiet until the drainage period. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra $500 to get this machine. You can pick the regular size load and the large load but sadly no extra small load for washing only a few items. I would also like a bigger capacity, I have a hard time getting a queen size comforter washed. You can get one into it, but it doesn't have enough room to really get clean. @HarperandKnowles  Před rokem +1

      That's impressive longevity for your Kenmore washer and dryer set! It's great to hear that they have served you well for 26 years with minimal repairs. Appliances that can stand the test of time are a testament to their durability and reliability.
      Repair professionals often have valuable insights based on their experience with different brands and models. If they recommend keeping your machines because they are known to be workhorses, it's worth considering their advice. Having appliances that are built to last can save you money in the long run and provide you with consistent performance.
      However, every machine has its lifespan, and eventually, even the most reliable appliances may require more repairs or maintenance. If the time comes when your Kenmore set needs significant repairs or begins to show signs of declining performance, it may be worth exploring newer options in the market.
      It's always a good idea to research different brands, read reviews, and consider your specific needs when looking for a new washer and dryer. Whether you decide to stick with your trusty Kenmore set or explore other options, finding a reliable and durable machine will ensure that your laundry needs are met.

      I had mine for 22 years, & LOVED it! Started making very hard stops, which I feared would break it. Had the tech come, he was pounding the "spin tube" but it wouldn't come out...was rusted to the frame or whatever. I finally said just stop. Even if it had run well, after all that it probably would've leaked. SO, decided to buy a new one. Figured I'd replace the dryer, too, & start with a matching set like I did in 2001. I went online, researched, bought a GE set that looked like a regular washer & dryer --not electronic. WRONG. It makes the most annoying beeps & little tunes, & has a VERY obnoxious rrrrk rrrrk rrrrk rrrrk sound when agitating. I'm going to call Lowe's delivery & have them pick this set up. Am going to a local appliance store, that usually sells Speed Queen, to see if they have a good set for me. I wish you could HEAR the machines running in the stores...which is why I'm on here, to try & find out how different machines sound!

    Hi Chip, I’m a fellow washing machine repair guy (40 years experience down here in Australia 🇦🇺) , not sure if you guys get access to Fisher Paykel products, but the Fisher Paykel top loader in my experience is far superior. Here’s why, there’s no gearbox, there’s nothing to rust, the spin bowl can be easily removed for cleaning (just 5 screws) it uses full water wash, and with the completely variable speed motor it can do the most gentle wool wash to the heaviest work-clothes washing. Also the spin speeds are completely variable from the slowest gentle spin to the fastest to realy dry the load. And available up to a large 10Kg size

    Our first Whirlpool front loader had a mold problem that was caused by a design flaw that Whirlpool was aware of but did nothing about (Whirlpool eventually ended up losing a class action lawsuit regarding this matter).
    Whirlpool successfully capitalized on their design flaw by marketing a washer cleaning product that they falsely claimed would eradicate the mold if used monthly.
    Our second front load Whirlpool (recommended by Consumer Reports and supposedly now mold free) crapped out after only three years!
    We replaced it with a Speed Queen TC5 purchased from a local family operated appliance store and so far we love it!
    I'm hoping that the SQ washer lasts for a long time, but if it doesn't I'm going to buy an old washer (circa 1980s or 90s), probably a Kenmore top loader, and refurbish it.

It fits nicely in my apartment closet that was designed specially for stack units. Mine, it seems huge but it really a nice size that make it possible for me to wash and dry almost anything I own. Specifically large enough to wash and dry a King size comforter sheet pillowcases and Bath sheet towels. I really love it. It has a lot of bells and whistles, like steam cleaning in the dryer. A special small load setting, Turbo washing, spin cycles that really get a lot of the water out. By far the best washer/dryer I've ever had, and I have owned 4 of each in the last 50 years.
