This really reminded me of how difficult opera singing must be and why the good singers make good money. You have to know the lyrics, know the music, be in voice, be dramatic, and do it in front of 1000 or 1500 people. When it's good, it's really good.

She is my favorite in this role so far. I think she absolutely owns that place between the precision and control of Baroque music on the one hand, and the sort of opulent luciousness that the Baroque era also represented. She is just a dream to listen to.

A superlative performance sung by Dam-Jensen with such perfect pitch and intonation. I have never been so utterly transfixed by other interpretations in the role. Not only does zinger sing so beautifully, but she moves with such grace and seductively captivates a bewitched Julius Caesar. Love the choreographed arm movements, especially when she shoots Cupid’s arrow!😍😍😍

I don't think it's "nutty." Caesar is wearing a modern military general's uniform and Cleopatra is wearing an elegant evening gown and long gloves. Must every single production be in done in pseudo Greco-Egyptian and Roman costumes???!!! It's a love story that transcends time. Why can't a production show a wee bit of creativity and originality without ruining the beauty of the production.

I'm participating in an opera-sponsored vocal competition, and this is the Opera song that I chose. For the preliminary round, you send in a recording, and the semi-finals and finals are live performance. If I make it to the semi-finals (I sent in the recording yesterday, and I find out Saturday), then I'm definitely taking this inspiration to heart. Regardless of if I make it to semi-finals, though, I've still got Solo and Ensemble to perform this at as well. Thanks for posting this!

The choreography is so interesting here, Like at 4:56 is the start of "zooming in for the kill", Ceasar is the hunted here, remember! At 5:18 he is under controlled now, and that quick turn (very elegantly done here) seems to suggest that she must kept her eye on him every second at this crucial moment, there is no let off here, no doubt who is in control here ! and finally casting a spell on him was eloquently illustrated by the hand ... it's like, Got you ! sucker ! lol

I've heard no better Cleopatra than Inger Dam Jensen's. Their vocals are of an elegance that makes other singers sound vulgar in comparison. The combination with Andreas Scholl as Caesar and her as Cleopatra, is the culmination of the musical enjoyment. But even the fantastic Andreas Scholl loses something of his Brilliantz next to Inger Dam Jensens.

Don't you think it's good to see a girl serenading a boy for a change !?
It's meant to be a joyful interlude, but I always find there is a hint of sadness in the music by Handel, may be it's fitting, because at that moment, Cleopatra court Cesare out of political needs ... May be she changed her mind later on, but that's a different story.

In response to amonasro100, Beverly Sills was one of the greatest singing actress, the closest to Callas that has come so far. ( Even though Callas and Sills were two completely different kind of actresses). I do agree that Dam-Jensen has a great voice, a beautiful legato which is perfectly focused... although the return of the A section was a bit dry and hoo hum. Listen to the cascades of trills in the return of the A section from Sills to hear a truly magical piece of artistry. I also fail to see the difficulty in the acting as it is blocked in this production and the awkward hands are distracting. To truly evaluate a singer's acting capacity, one needs to look at both the individual aria and the development from beginning to end. Don't take my word for it, listen to the complete recording and then top it off by listening to Sill's Manon.

Over the actual stage at this theater, it's written "Ein Blot Til Lyst," or "not only for pleasure" to state that the theater wants the performances in Copenhagen to be edifying as well as entertaining.
Here though, we have a scene that presents a stage-within-a-stage, and over that is written "only for pleasure." It's meant to imply that Cleopatra intends her performance to be purely for Caesar's enjoyment. The audience laughed because they recognized the reference to the actual theater itself.
