Soprano Susanna Phillips performs the aria "V'adoro pupille" from Handel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto with Boston Baroque on April 23, 2017. Jordan Hall at New England Conservatory.
    ARIA TEXT:
    V'adoro, pupille,
    saette d'amore,
    le vostre faville
    son grate nel sen.
    Pietose vi brama
    il mesto mio core,
    ch'ogn'ora vi chiama
    l'amato suo ben.
    ARIA TRANSLATION:
    Sweet eyes, darts of love,
    I adore you.
    Your sparks are welcome guests
    in my breast.
    My sorrowful heart desires you
    to be merciful,
    for its beloved calls out
    unceasingly for you.

I attended one of these performances. Phillips has real stage presence and a lovely (if not huge) voice and tons of musicality! The Caesar, forget who he is, was great too. Boston Baroque always does a good job.

One of Handel's greatest creations. Impossible to embellish that melody so best to do the Da Capo as a straight repeat.

Maria Bayo.

      @@dddevchonka зачем тут быстрый темп?

    • @dddevchonka
      @dddevchonka Před 5 dny

All those yards of gold lame fabric is a wee bit kitschy, but despite that Susanna nails it. A gorgeous rendition!

Awful. The orchestra is very reduced and droopy at times the sound is so straight toned and cold it is irritating. The entire thing sounds flat and dreary. The soprano is a bore and offer zero help or diction. The voice has no vocal character or size. This has become the fascination in early music which is sad. The dancers and winged costume stance effects are super. The pony tail looked stupid on the tall girl to the right however and should had been corrected. The hand movements trying to be Lully versus 18th C where they were still used but differently was….erm it bordered on confusing and should had been tighter and more angular. Again wrong. The effect of these kind of performances are tranquil and somulant at best for the overheated ADHD types. The perfect thing for nervous opera hating classic music patrons who think this is how it sounded in the 1700’s or should. It isn’t by the way. The original Cleopatra was a bright high Italian soubrette soprano with dominance. Not this child, who looks asleep. Also the plugging of the Conservatory in the stage set was ridiculous. The Boston classical music scene really is just so strange. They used to have strong connection to opera and this Baroque movement but it is all so watered down one night as well listen to a CD. This truly was the flattest “Vadoro pupile” I have ever heard or seen. Terrible.
