Split Batch Brewing: 1 Brewday = 2 Beers

  • It’s late October and the days of brewing outdoors have definitely come to an end. Although the wet weather has forced me indoors it hasn’t washed away my enthusiasm to try new things on brewday.
    As a craft beer enthusiast and homebrewer I’m all about variety and the art of splatch brewing has recently caught my attention……so much so it’s now become a regular method of mine to split batches-i.e., use the same wort to make at least two different beers. The concept of split batch brewing is pretty straight forward, has been around for ages and offers very divergent results.
    In this grain to glass video I brew two unique recipes on the Grainfather G40, a vibrant Hibiscus IPA and a zingy Juniper and Lime IPA.

    on the web we can see tons of videos on the making of beer, but rare are those who take the time to describe the implication of the additions, what each grain brings to the character of the beer, it helps to become aware from what we can hope for as a final result... very good video!! we want more!! I am a big fan!!

      Thank you so much, really appreciate those comments, that means a lot! It took a bit of planning to come up with each recipe and I wanted to share my reasoning for each piece of the recipe. Personally, I think it's very important for homebrewers to understand what each ingredient brings to the final beer. Way too often we throw in grains, hops and yeast and hope for the best. When I brew clone recipes I like to get into the mind of the recipe creator and ask myself questions around the choice of ingredients. Also, it makes a beer so much more interesting when you have a story behind it. Now, in saying that, I once had a friend over trying my beer, not sure if it was the beer or the story which put hime asleep LOL

    Great video as always Glenn. Just wondering if you could clarify on those additions such as the berries etc. You seem to be draping a hop net over your fermenter, I have the grainfather conical which won’t seal if I use a net like that. How are you adding those without clogging up the fermenter?

    • @TheBeardyManCraftBeers
      @TheBeardyManCraftBeers  Před rokem +1

      Thanks so much and great question! I basically use two different size hop nets when it comes to the fermenter. The first, a large a hop net, I use when transferring wort to the fermentors and removed once I fill the fermentors - just an extra step I take to grab stuff I don't want in the fermenters. Then I've a couple of small hop nets and hop canisters which I use when adding dry additions. Now with the second beer, I added the Juniper berries, lime zest and hops into another sanitised large hop net drapped over the Klarstein fermentor at the end of fermentation and leave that in place for about 3-4 days. I'm not too concerned about a perfect seal at this point and it's worked perfectly for me each time. Wort contact with additions is important, the smaller hop nets don't give enough room, the large hop nets work very well for maximum contact......never ever had any issues with that process either. Thanks very much, great question!

      My additions on these beers were a lot more open than my normal standards due to the fact it's video. I am fairly anal and most additions are either rapid additions or closed.
