- Professional chef Saul Montiel and home cook Gabrielle are swapping materials and hoping for the best! We set Gabrielle up with $167 worth of the finest ingredients from chef Saul’s kitchen along with his knockout chicken parmesan recipe. To lend a helping hand, food scientist Rose dialed in to offer some of her trademark wisdom and encouragement. Over with Saul, $19 worth of ingredients were being given new life and a few augmentations in a quest to improvise a gourmet chicken parm. Grab a slice of garlic bread and tune in to find out who came out on top under these mixed up circumstances!

I appreciate Saul's substitutes. They genuinely were something you could find in your kitchen (not like vanilla beans or oyster mushrooms), they fit in the spirit of the recipe, they weren't ridiculous expensive, they only enhanced the existing recipe without replacing it, and he still used what he was given (the tomato sauce, boxed spaghetti). I think that's how these episodes should be; one or two simple substitutions or additions that fit the spirit of what they're given. Not "ignore what came in the box and do my own thing."

I was just thinking this, on the wings episode Frank just gets rid of the buffalo sauce and makes his own sauce with all these ingredients I've never had in my kitchen in my life
I love frank, but he's REALLY bad for the "ignore the box, do what I want" thing
i just love how saul makes a joke about having a cold heart and then proceeds to laugh like a little child we must protect him at all costs
I really like how chef Saul only added very simple ingredients that everyone already has at home, other chefs always add some crazy expensive stuff and I feel like it goes against the whole point of these videos

Spaghetti buns is actually traditionally Italian! You can see it in Naples as frittata di pasta. The frico too, may not be exactly it but just the fact chef Saul knows about the existence of frico (it's very specific from Friuli, north-eastern Italy) is amazing. My boy Saul knows his stuff! Kudos.

As an Italian, I found myself captivated and impressed by how Saul gave a spin to traditional dishes in such an original yet quite respectful way. I really must try to make that chicken in spagehtti buns! :-D

This is the best Epicurious video I've ever seen. Saul nearly killed me when he stuck the knife through the sandwich and said "Say hello to my little friend". I could have stopped the video at his fork drop and died happy. And Gabi is so genuine. She's like the sister or best friend every girl wishes she could have.

I really like the home cook’s bright, determined, and upbeat personality and it’s very cool to see her willingly tackle the large amount of complex ingredients that the professional chef provided for her. I don’t know if it is just me, but I think Gabrielle’s personality is a bit similar to Emily’s because they seem to both have pretty bright personalities. I am going to be honest, I think the professional chef has a very nice personality and accent and he cooked the home cook’s recipe ingredients very well. It’s very creative to see the professional chef use spaghetti buns instead of traditional spaghetti and it’s extremely creative for the professional chef to present his chicken parmesan in a form of a sandwich.

A lot of the other pro chefs add like 10 ingredients, so I really admired Chef Saul for only adding a few and being creative with what he was given!

@@majoroldladyakamom6948 no need to bake at all if you pound the chicken thin it will fry to complete doneness as soon as the breading turns golden and the fact that they didn't bake actually means the chicken is juicier because they didn't cook the chicken more just to melt cheese, cheese was already melted for them!

I adore these two together and individually. Chef Saul is so knowledgable and creative, not to mention funny! And Gaby is also so sweet always so respectful of all the ingredients. I love Saul! Watching him cook always makes me day, he is so precious for this world lol and he is an amazing cook, so creative and so spontaneous you just don’t know what he’s going to come up with but he never fails to amaze me!
Gabi is perfect for this kind of content! For some, myself included, this could be pretty nerve racking but she approaches it as a learning experience.
This was so wholesome! Saul's expertise really shines even with basic ingredients. And Gabrielle really did a great job considering it was a new recipe and technique for her!
Gabbie is attending culinary school now (ICE as a matter of fact!) so I'm excited to see her eventually get promoted to a level 3 chef!
