I've been dumped and had to walk the walk of shame all the way home... I didn't blame the gelding that dumped me... I DID however, blame the PIGS that broke out of their fence and ran at us, screaming, scaring the crap out of me and the horse... That gelding ran all the way home. Mom caught him, checked him for injuries, un-tacked him, brushed him down, cooled him out, and let him into the pasture.. THEN I walked into the gate... Bruised, hot, dirty, upset... She says: "Heath is ok. Go take a shower."

Any time I’ve seen problems with other animals it accidents. You can almost always see why an animal is doing it and the communication way before it happens . If you understand animals. You can often pick up real quickly why an animal does what they do if you observe them enough and understand what’s going on.

As a female British rider myself this was just infuriating and embarrassing to watch, no wonder he's terrified with someone like that on his back. People are calling her out on FB too but she just replies with immature troll like jokes, her horse did actually go lame after this too and is still recovering, as well as bruised ribs (probably from her booting him) and sore pelvis. Her attitude is just disgusting, refuses to take any responsibility and makes fun of it all while her horse is suffering. Also from 17:28 onwards he actually does have a metal bit in, she said they went home, changed it and went back there again, that's why the video cuts, bridle/reins are different plus you can see it clearly at 17:30 while she's ripping it out of his mouth, probably why he dumped her, funny that she got ditched right after putting one in and he behaved the same way the 2nd time going, bit changed nothing. Sadly I've seen so many riders here treat their horses the exact same way, screaming, yelling, swearing, name calling, yanking on the horses mouth while booting them so hard in the ribs and beating them with whips, throwing huge temper tantrums like spoiled brats when they don't get their way.
Of course not everyone is like this, but I've seen it a lot and people like this make the rest of us look bad. Horses are living beings with feelings, not machines designed to obey all the time. That british classic aggressive tone with "GET ON!" makes me cringe every time, so many here do it and it sounds ridiculous, it never helps anything... Yelling at the horse in that tone and expecting them to calm down is counter productive. I don't understand why people think it's okay to treat animals like this, regardless of how frustrated you are you shouldn't take it out on them, she caused it to escalate to a dangerous level by scaring and frustrating the horse even more with no release and it was unnecessary, she's lucky she wasn't hurt. Regardless I hope the horse ends up being okay, he's probably traumatized now, this is how good horses get ruined.

i will say there are some just downright rude horses that will try to get away with stuff and pick a fight and if you growl get on they know and will bugger off with the cheekiness. this woman is a disgrace though and if the horse was actually being naughty it would’ve stopped earlier and the ears would be more focused on her. the horse was spooking and this womans cowardliness made it all the more worse. she’s a sad excuse of a horse woman. horses need to process anxiety inducing stimuli, not just get flooded by such. push a horse forward but don’t force them into something theyre blatantly not ready for. once the horse took some steps of confidence she should’ve reassured him that that’s what she is looking for and that forward=confidence and if the horses wants to spin around and move around they can but they will just be doing more work/movement. but once the horse stops and facing the direction theyre evading, let them process things and take in the scary stimuli. patience is key with horses especially ones more spooky/nervous. the calmer and more patient, the better. when the horse turned around she should have just turned him and kept him facing the direction she wanted him to go so that he can dance and spin as long as he wants to but when he faces the scary stimuli he gets to rest, when he goes forward he gets praise and pats since thats what she wants him to do. it eases the horse and boost confidence !

Seeing as you know so much about this horse and her page maybe you’d like to share how kind she is to him normally. He was having an off day and so was she, shit happens. If you actually knew her you’d know his pelvis being out of place (not sore) is a long term issue, not due to him falling down the ditch. He is not recovering anymore, like you stated, and is sound and has been for a few days. But clearly you know best. This horse IS NOT traumatised, he loves his ‘mum’ and goes up to her everyday, by choice. Take your uneducated comments elsewhere.

you can condition it to where yelling at them gives them a boost of endorphins. So like, if the critter is getting tired or acting up youve conditioned it to get scared when you yell. In dog sled racing its not uncommon, the seaveys even wrote about doing it in their book. Im pretty sure there were mushers back in the day that preferred fearful dogs.
Just sayin, there are people that use fear and yelling and it actually works. In dog sled racing it really can give you an advantage. If you have netflix the show "losers" has an episode that illustrates that pretty well following an iditarod musher that loses to a musher thats harder on their dogs. one of the seaveys i mentioned above^
**And i could show you videos here on youtube of indigenous mushers in the arctic using whips and they seem to work pretty well for controlling the dogs, just sayin'. They hear that whip and they STFU lol. Its not that different than yelling.
And in general, if you yell loud enough or make a loud enough noise it will make groups of dogs quiet. Ive seen it lots of times at boarding places, shelters, sled dog yards etc etc. It rubs me the wrong way and i prefer not to do it, but it can get the dogs to stfu.

When I train my dog, I get frustrated a lot with him, but I *never* yell or raise my hand at him since he’s a dog and he doesn’t know. Saying that animals don’t have the capability to feel is plain objectification. We have plenty of research that shows how horses express certain feelings, so you as a rider should understand them. What they mean with bullying is pressuring the horse into doing something they are scared of. And if your riding school is teaching such practices, you should really go find another, because that has nothing to do with being a good rider, trainer or even person.

Because we were together for so long and I rode him everyday, we had confidence in each other, knowing we'd do what it took to keep each other safe. Due to his blind eye, there were times when I would just turn his head so he could investigate what he was unsure of with his good eye. It's not rocket science folks! Listen to your horse.

Country I live in is normal to have to ride on the road and be careful with vehicles. It sucks but no other choice in that place, really. I used to have a horse that was really nervous but I worked with him so much off saddle that he trusted me. I only know he did because when something scared him, like a big truck passing by, I'd have him stand still until it went by. At one time this truck hauling construction machine did worry me a bit, was louder and bigger than what he'd experienced before, I could literally feel him tremble under me and yet without pulling him any more than just stop him from moving and a whistle (I have a habit to teach every horse I've had that a whistle means "stop"), he stood still and I did no yapping at him. I did give him a moment to stand once the truck passed by and let him look back to it and realize the big scary thing was leaving. But man I was so proud of that horse and the amount of trust his nervous self had with me. I'd never make him go if he was trying to go sideways, several times I had to get off the saddle and lead him. I just can't imagine doing what this lady did, with a horse obviously scared and trying to brute force him to continue. That's the best way to make the horse go from a bit nervous to panic mode.
Bit of a long one, sorry.

Rick. You are right in saying, it isn't the horse's fault. Do you have any videos that may describe how you would handle a situation like this in order to get better results? How would you help the horse feel secure and condition them to handle the tall grass and open environments. For me, the first sign of the horse showing nervousness, I would work with him at that point rather than make him continue to walk further into his perceived danger. Thanks.

I don’t know about Rick but if my horse won’t trust me to do something (i.e. cross a new and scary stream) if it’s possible, I’ll try to walk him on foot so that he a, sees that I’m fine and he’ll be fine and b, builds more trust in me that I wouldn’t lead him into anything I wouldn’t go into myself. If hand walking isn’t an option, I’d normally try to either find another way around, or if possible ask a more experienced horse and rider to lead the way. If necessary, then scary experiences can always be used as learning experiences. That’s just me though, everyone has their own methods

I wanted to say I think you have the right idea and it's hard to give feedback on a particular scenario w/o a full story such as had he ever been ridden out this far? Was this his 1st, 2nd, 3rd ride outside of being ridden in the round pen or arena? How far away from home was she? Has he been exposed to cattle before? etc. and so on.
You are correct that when the brain goes into the amygdala AKA flight or fight mode our job is to get the frontal lobe activated again and we can't expect them to do much until we have turned that part of the brain back on which is why we do so many exercises on the ground and in saddle over and over and over before we leave the barn. We know what the horse is good at so we engage the less than confident horse in a set up where they can get the right answers while we have faith in the horse and our riding that they will. It's OK for them to be curious about cattle and look, but that doesn't mean run away. An example would be when the horse stops moving and has their head up, I might ask them to lower their head and they may only drop it and pick it back up, but they would still get the release. I would do it over and over again and the drops would get longer and longer and more relaxed. Then I need more brain power so I would ask for the nose to come out to the left. Very quick releases to show this horse can get right answers out here where things are scary and I'm introducing things that are well established and eventually I want to have the horse be able to bend their neck around to me if possible with very little pressure. I have still not asked for a step forward. Maybe I ask for the right side now. Once I have several movements and you can pick whatever you train your horse to do then I will switch them up to ensure the horse is paying attention to me and not picking up on the repetition. I am just bending them and flexing them at the point I got them to on the trail. Normally once I have connection with the horse's mind again I can easily continue the ride by asking for foreword, but as a trainer I weigh out the pros and cons of if I am pushing this horse too far too fast, how long did it take me to get them refocused here vs in the past when in the Arena or Round pen, etc. It's my job to ensure they are not mentally pushed too hard just like they are not physically pushed too hard. I might make note of trees or particular farm buildings I could see and ask the horse to move forward so I could ask for a very nice calm turn to go home instead of the spin and potentially taking off towards home in flight, not likely remembering that this was a good event riding away from the barn. Sometimes you take the win you get and that may be a solid ride where the horse struggled, but was brought back to calm and learned that fear was not going to be punished on a ride and their human would guide them calmly through anything and they were listened to and not asked to go further. Build stronger bonds. I would have a goal to go even one stride further next time. Key is ask for something you can get some "yes" answers to and then ask for something harder if you feel the horse should be capable of doing it. A horse that can won't appreciate the extra work with their refusals and will quit refusals real quick. A horse that can't or maybe shouldn't will still be giving off clear signals of their discomfort with things.
I never suggest getting off unless it's actually dangerous. If you are not able to have the most basic communication on horseback the horse should not be outside of a round pen or fenced arena. In my many years when people have suggested to get off and walk the horse through I have NEVER found it to be helpful as I just rode with confidence the horse would not have issues and magically the horses did not have issues. People have gasped and said "that horse is afraid of water", "that horse won't walk from dirt road onto tar" and I got on and simply asked them to move forward and had zero problems and turned around like "What is the problem?". It was far and away the rider's fear of the reactivity of the horse to certain things above all else than the horses who have ever had the issues.

Absolutely appalling behaviour from the rider. Honestly curious what she cut out of the video considering how harsh she was getting with the poor horse. I don't understand how much of an ego these people have. Sometimes you just have to give up and get off the horse before it gets worse for both you and the horse. I have an an arab who is on the anxious side and what I do when he is feeling nervous is simply get off and lead him through or past something that is worrying him, I put myself between him and the scary thing as he sees me as a leader to find comfort in. And that's as soon as I feel tension from him, not waiting until it gets worse.
Horses feel when we are getting worked up, their hearing is so sensitive. Why I always encourage people to get off if they start to feel frustrated.. Your horse will thank you. I recently had to tell a 12 yo that maybe it's a good idea to call it a day as she was getting overwhelmed and I noticed the horse was picking up on that. People are taught to "end it on a positive note" but they think it means when the horse does something right.. Not necessarily, it can mean not reaching to the point of a blow up. Sometimes that "positive note" is quitting so you and/or the horse won't end up hurt.

Horse needs to put his human up for auction. Lol!
Seriously though, quiz time! Just want to test my knowledge on what Rick has been teaching for years, and make sure I've been learning:
    1. More groundwork, and casual bonding time with horsey. And desensitization.
    2. No bits!
    3. Make sure rest of tack is comfy before leaving for a ride.
    4. Be calm. Less talking, and more relaxing.
    5. Consider what is scaring horsey, and listen. Maybe horsey has good reason to be scared and you should both leave.
    6. Proceed if safe, but take time with horsey. Maybe consider dismounting. Work through issues with horsey as a team. Be a confident and considerate leader.
    7. Desensitize horsey to new novelties in area.
    8. Be fair. Ask your horse to do something for you, but be quick to reward with release of pressure. And only ask a little bit at a time if need be.
    9. End ride on positive easy note so horsey doesn't think it was so bad.
    Do I get a carrot?

I'm so glad she's being called out by you and others, but that domineering attitude will probably prevent her from introspection. So sad that this woman is miserable and taking it out on this innocent horse.

Maybe she should sell the horse and get a quad instead. Since she`s obviously not interested in understanding the animal and just want to go some place :D

This isn't the first time she's treated him like this and it won't be the last, I know her in person. She unfortunately will also never change nor sees any issue in her behaviour or treatment of Mo. Mo is a lovely animal. He had multiple body issues that she will never get sorted, he's underweight and over worked. She's also a dog walker and pet sitter!!

Sounds like a classic narcissist. Incapable of believing anything they do is wrong. She is a horrible owner, who knows literally zero about horses.

I saw the lady post this on a facebook group, its quite interesting it ended up here, maybe she will watch this and learn something hopefully!
Really informative video as always! I find it frustrating when people talk to horses like theyre children, people need to respect the fact that they have a brain too and if you just listen and pay attention to what theyre trying to say, youll realise you really should have been listening to them in the first place!
    Background from the original post:
This horse lives on a cow farm but is terrified of cows apparently. He broke the bitless bridle so she went back and put the bitted bridle on.

RICK, that's not Tara (owner of the horse that flipped over, owner of the horse that ran away and told the viewers that the horse spooked). I must admit that Tara and this new person have similar characteristics. 🤣🤣🤣

I would've shown my horse that there were ditches on either side of the road. She's so lucky he didn't break his legs or get caught under him.

I've never heard anyone sound so angry and hateful and mean towards their animal. She shouldn't own or be around horses, period. I hope she doesn't act that way toward children too, but wouldn't be surprised if she did. Nasty nasty human being.

Told Vet today "Let me hold my dog while you do what you need to" she replied "No, we got it" my 7 lb dog wiggled so harshly two grown women could not hold her, so the Vet gave up. I told the Vet "You just taught my dog that if she squirms enough the Vet will let her go."
