More Bad Press For Budweiser Clydesdale Wagon Accident - Abusing Horses For Profit & Advertising

  • Budweiser is an unethical company that exploits horses to win over people's emotions. Their archaic and cruel use, trapping, breeding, docking horse's tails, huge Metal Pain Bits show their lack of care or compassion for horse's welfare.
    ----------- UPDATE ON WHAT CAUSED THIS--------------------
    According to many comments, it appears the DRIVER, the person in green on the right side of wagon, inadvertently ( very bad mistake), switched hands and the reins on left side of horses, which should have been in left hand, were switched. So when driver pulled with left hand, wanting horses to turn and move AWAY from the wall, he was actually pulling on the right reins, causing horses to MOVE INTO WALL. ABSOLUTELY HUMAN ERROR THAT MADE THE HORSES PAY FOR IT
    Note: Docking traditionally has been performed to prevent the tail of the horse from interfering with harness and carriage equipment.

    My great grandfather used a 4-6 horse team for logging. NO BITS! He used to rant about Budweiser putting their horses in serious danger in small arenas, tail docking and a long list of other things. Family and friends wouldn't dare to drink Budweiser on his farm or in his presence. He'd literally kick people off his land for even joking about the Bud horses, with some choice words ringing in their ears.
    I can hear him stomping his feet, hollering as he always did, "cut the damn lines, cut any and all tack, get those "blanking" horses out of there you (insert many words!!") And he was always right. RIP Gramps!💜🐴
    Edit/ Almost guaranteed that poor horse didn't make it. I thought it sustained major hip damage as well. That walk out of the ring was anything but hopeful imho.

      The horse is fine, so your "guarantee" that the "poor" horse didn't make it just turned into about as much nonsense as the rest of your comment. Not only are these horses not in "serious danger," they are finely trained and doing great. You clearly don't work or live with horses.

      My grandmother on the other side of the family was a world class undefeated barrel racing champion. Her trophy room was the size of my house. Ole Gramps hated everything she did because of what she'd do to her horses. One of her horses ended up kicking her square in the face leaving her with a permanent horseshoe scar. Gramps laughed like hell until the day he died about that, cause he figured about time one of her horses got a lil payback.

    The guy in green swap the rains. You have 8 of them 4 in every hand, and you try to have them in the right length, so sometimes you take all of them in one hand, so you can adjust their length with the other hand. As he tucks them back, he swept the front left with right. He thought he pooled to the left, but actually he was pulling to the right. Big mistake, actually a beginner mistake ... I hope it makes sense ... you can see at 3:33 as he's adjusting the rains how the horses go to the right instead of left, and then he wants to correct them because he thought it was the horse's mistake, but it gets only worse ... Again, as always, the human fault ...

      Mistake aye but not an abusive one and not worthy of a Rick video. Nor is carriage driving abuse. I respect Rick's views on bits although I DO NOT agree with them. I ride usually with snaffles although sometimes depending on what a show requires, I will use a shank. Is it necessary, probably not. But its mainly for my own piece of mind, knowing I have that leverage if I need it. (and there was a time that I did when my horse spooked and ran off on me. No way could I have gotten him stopped if I had a hackamore or god forbid a halter and leadrope. The one time I did ride with a halter and a leadrope it ended with a spooked horse and a sprained ankle. I was lucky it wasn't worse.)
      With large carriage horses like this and with all that weight pulling, a bit is absolutely necessary especially in an enclosed space like this where there isn't a whole lot of room to maneuver. You want quick responses that require little pull which you cannot get with a hackamore in this case. If it was one horse maybe. But not eight and certainly not when they're connected like you see here.
      People show their horses. People like to show off their horses. Too bad Rick can't understand that. Can things at shows be better, sure. Does that mean all shows are bad or should be stopped. NO!!

The technique is readily available and could prevent so much hurt and injury. Can't believe they didn't just cut the darn tack straight away. I 100% agree nothing a knife couldn't have sped up here, screw the tack. That's replaceable the life of the horse isn't. I stopped supporting rodeos years ago (went to them when I was younger, but when I got older is when I realized and stopped). I saw this video in my recommendations I knew it would be bad. Accidents can happen, horses are big and some times things don't go as planned. But the worst incidents always happen in rodeos and much more frequently. I love the Budweiser horses, they're apart of a wonderful old tradition. But it's not wonderful if an innocent horse gets hurt beyond repair. The only person that seemed trained enough and sensible enough was that one green guy who knew immediately and got down. Also, I think that a lot of the people who ran up were probably the rodeo staff. Cuz the Budweiser staff wear red T-shirts and light tan pants. I don't want anything to do with rodeos, and so I'm glad that you did a video on this and talked about it.
    I was also recommended a different video where a similar incident happened with the Budweiser horses. It happened at a different rodeo from like maybe 10 years ago from when the video was posted, or something. Similar things happened and I probably didn't catch as many things wrong as how you did.
    Cutting off the reins would've helped a lot. You can replace the reins, but not the horse.
    If the horse doesn't have anything broken, then I hope that he gets a really long vacation, therapy, good food, and good medication to help him feel as good as he can be. Maybe get him a pet goat, too. I've heard that goats for horses helps keep stress down.

When he pulls on the four right reins which should have been the left,the first pair of horses to feel the pull on the reins are the leaders and the first leader to feel the pull is the right one, but it should have been the left leader because that where the end of the long rein is attached, whereas the reins go through ring attachments for the others. The wheelers who are up at the front are the last to get the pull on the rein and that's why they escaped too much involvement. For one thing, it's too noisy in settings like this for the horses to hear the driver's commands. Another thing, the driver should never have stopped so close to the wall. He should have stopped in the middle of the arena in case the lead horses turned opposite of how driver commanded them. I agree with you, Budweiser should stop these eight-hitch horse-drawn events. And I think it should be against the law to dock horses tails. The horse that was down with all the weight of several horses on top clearly had hip or leg injury from how he walked off. This is so sad to watch.

    Long before any other incidents with the Bud horses I've been sickened by their practise of docking tails. It's illegal here in England and cruel everywhere.
    Why there are no quick releases on the harnesses is a mystery. If they CARED about their horses, if safety of the horses was even on their list of concerns that would be top of the list.

    I almost exclusively own and work draft breeds. Whenever I am working horses, especially teams this large I keep a pocket knife on me just in case something like this happens. The first thing I would have done is get the other horses out of the equation, even if that means cutting them free and setting them loose in the arena. Given the choice horses aren't going to trample other horses, they're going to avoid it if possible. Having all those horses involved means not only is the injured horse getting stepped on, but the people who are trying to help are in danger of accidentally getting stepped on by a 2000+ pound animal. It's easy to say this is a freak accident, but the way that it was handled is fucking horrifying.

    We moved from Colorado to Georgia about a year and a half ago. We lived within about 20 minutes (driving time) of the Budweiser stables. Of course there were signs everywhere advertising the horses and public tours of the stable. I grew up there and remember when "Bud" moved in (I'll be 64 in a week or two). In all of the years that the stables have been there , in Northern Colorado, I only saw the horses actually there one time. The tours never happened. They most definitely had to be hiding something. Apart from all the things you pointed out: don't let the horse try to stand up with the neck piece! For f**** sake, no wonder he wonder he couldn't get up. He couldn't use his head to balance himself, nor put his front legs under him the right way, cause of the equipment. Imagine having that heavy thing on your neck trying to stand up. This really irritated me. In second place about things that pissed me off, was what you already pointed out. Remove all the other horses, before letting the one on the ground stand up. Could even have been worse. He gets up, has a broken leg, walks a step and falls into the other horses again, they fall too.... Jesus effing Christ. Kudos to the guy that jumped off the wagon immediately though. I half expected him to stand next to the horses and be like "oh I can't jump in there, I will get hurt, what do I do". • @EXROBOWIDOW
    @EXROBOWIDOW Před rokem +4

    When I've observed the Budweiser Clydesdales in person, they seem to be very well trained. I think the driver got distracted, or else a rein got hung up on something somewhere. For a multiple pair hitch, the strongest horses are generally the wheel horses. They need to be able to slow and stop the wagon, though the wagon also has a brake. The lead horses need to be the fastest, and the middle pairs or "swing" horses need to be most agile, because they're between the other horses, and have to deal with the pole between them.
    The traces that attach the horses to the load are usually quick release, and can be unhooked as soon as tension is taken off. When hitching horses to a load, the reins are usually attached first so the horse can be controlled before the traces are hooked on. In the video, the lead horses have their traces unhooked right away, then the reins are taken off, which of course is the reverse of when they are hitched. The horses are pretty calm overall. I can imagine if draft horses did not have the "cold blooded" temperament, people would never have used them for farm work.
    A couple things I don't like about the Budweiser hitch. Obviously, the tail docking is an old tradition that needs to be tossed on the trash heap of history. It looks weird, and I don't buy the excuse that it's a safety measure to keep them from getting their tails over the reins. They also have check reins. I don't think they're tossing their heads because they're nervous. They've done that every time I've seen them in person. I think it's due to the check reins and bitting.

  • @nemehoto
    @nemehoto Před rokem +10

    Hi Rick, most of the time I love your videos. Though while your right these horses shouldn’t be used in this way… but if you don’t mind I’d like to correct a couple things. Each pair of horses are a bonded team trained specifically for their job in the team. The ‘wheelers’ are the strongest 2 or 4 at the wagon. They are the calmest ones. The first pair are the lead ones, you are correct they are the most experienced. Now to the part where I feel you might be a little wrong. The swingle tree or (posts) are chained to the wagons each harness attaches to a pivot. When the crash occurred those chains and harnesses were torqued twisted and tightened… if you do not release the harness carefully all that pressure and twisting force causes a lot of whipping and twisting of the breaching straps collars and surcingles which can break ribs, cause muscle damage etc.. When a horse goes down in a team situation you have to remove the tension of the wagon hitches and swingle trees before you can move the horses. Several were broken, if you ‘cut’ the harnesses on the lead pair that broken swingle tree would have whipped back causing possible severe injuries to the horse that was down and the one beside him. Poor guy on the ground was stepped on and because of being pushed down sideways the harness turned into a vise, poor guy had a hard time breathing until they could get that broken hitch from squeezing him like a twitch around his girth. Yes it seemed very slow in getting the poor guy released and back on his feet, but ‘cutting’ the harness with the hitch twisted and splinted like that would make a horrible accident 10x worse. Whipping splinted wood flying, chained and leather flying around whipping injuring and scaring the horses…. What they did, they could have done faster… but the poor horse on the ground was severely winded. Likely he won’t work a hitch again, but it rare for them to ‘put them down’.

    • @rachelleashley4097
      @rachelleashley4097 Před rokem

      Ok, so question (honestly because I don't know): would it be possible to create a breakaway harness and swingle tree so that if something like this happens, there could be a breakaway? Still might have to rely on a well-trained driver (or dog...did you notice the dog seemed to sense something before this pile up happens??) But A-B already spends so much money on special harnesses and the like. Could someone think up something that would not twist and torque and create a hurtful mess? The other thing is that when money is the focus as it is with Duke, Captain, Jake, and the other equines here, the A-B people probably wouldn't want their million-dollar babies galloping around an arena giving people the opportunity to see how "well behaved and cared for" hurting Clydedales look. So another issue is 'controlling the assets'. Hmm, wasn't there some guy that set up a park that tried to do that and disaster ensued? Also made a nice Dr. Suess story that led to mayhem! Interesting things happen when people try to improperly control forces of nature...😆

Driver gathers the reins to start the docking maneuver, which is pretty complex, as each pair of horses have to sidestep at a different rate and size of step. Lead horse on the right is confused, I don’t know if a rein got bound up and pulled too hard miscuing, but left horse (distracted by the crowd) steps over, bumps into the lead horse on the right, (already confused by a miscue), and keeps turning, second team left right horse tries to push the errant horses back. By this time the harnesses are tightening unnaturally and torquing and pinching, the hitch pole is starting to break cracking wood sounds, lead horses breeching straps and collars are twisting, lead left horse panics he cannot see the horse he is pushing into, right lead horse being pinched and the crowd reacts, the blinders are rubbing his eyes, he moves away punching his teammate into the poor second horse and pushing him down… that poor horse could not move and between the front pair, the hitch pole and swingle tree that he tripped over down he goes… those harnesses are incredibly well built, designed to pull heavy wagons, up and down hills.

I thought surely the horses must be trained in whatever maneuver they were about to do. I would hate to see the Clydesdales go the way of the Dodo. In many cases they're the only exposure most people get to these lovely animals. I'm old enough to remember a team of Clydesdales pulling the ancient farm equipment that cut hay in the field next to my house. I'd wait for the school bus down near the pasture where they were kept. The size of them was truly intimidating to childhood me. Even after 60 years of being around horses, I'm still in awe of the size of the draft breeds. If PETA had it's way they would go extinct. It is not abusive to make a horse pull a wagon as long as safety adjustments are made. Perhaps branding up the tails instead if docking them so they don't get caught in the traces.

    I was blasted with all sorts of nasty comments and eg oh no, you can never do that because at higher levels of these competitions the whole idea is to make each jump challenging, and clearly I know nothing about horse sport.

They are the largest of the team and account for about 60% of pulling and stopping the wagon. The swing team is slightly smaller and is used to maneuver the wagon through its turns and so forth. The lead team is the smallest and most athletic. Really, the lead team is just pretty. In my younger, dumber days, I drove a draft cross for a commercial livery. Docked tails so that they can't get their tails over the lines, which would be a control hazard. I was dumb to do it, and didn't see the discomfort on the horses until I was in it. Only the Shire historically does not have its tail docked for its work. All in all, excellent analysis of what happened, should have happened, and didn't happen that day. Thanks!

    Also the collars they wear weighs 130 lbs each. It’s terrible. Thank you for helping to understand how terrible this is.

    I had a neighbor who was kicked in the head by a Clydesdale. It was a miracle he survived and recovered.
    These horses are huge and have a powerful kick.

    I once saw a huge bull have his back broken...was drug out of the arena by a tractor...I will never attend a rodeo again ever...I only liked them as a kid because I loved animals..still do but finally got a clue that this is not fun, never has been for the animals...in the real world...the roping and branding happens with the whole herd in attendance and babies get to run back to mom and in my opinion there still has to be a better way...and I very much detest the ear tags....let's all vote for painless branding....

    I agree with you 110% that these type of events need to stop!

    Many want to show off but don't want to put in the work needed. Showing off should be effortless. Should be the result of work and learning well done to the point where it makes things easy...

    You are completely right in everything you said, this is horse abuse.
    Human beings should stop involving animals in their madness, stupid human beings
    What a horrible thing to see, this horse that fell was definitely seriously injured and was euthanized.
    Rodeos and this type of presentation should be banned, it is a despicable event.
    People who participate in this abusive and cowardly practice with animals are not mentally normal people.

    These arenas are too small for a team of 8 horses first of all. Second, in the real world, a team of 8 horses would have very rarely used if ever. A team of 4 horses was a big deal. Stagecoaches had teams of 4 because the coach was very heavy and the roads very rough; basically dirt paths. The 4 horse team was also for security in case one horse got lame or died, 3 could still get them to the next stop. One horse would not have been able to pull the coach alone. They also were not always draft horses. A pair of Clydesdales can pull a considerable amount of weight, so to have a team of eight is unnecessary. In a small arena, they’re harder to control because you have to hold them back considerably. They’re not Cadillacs that start off smooth. When you say pull, they throw their weight into it and lunge forward. In a small space, your telling them to pull and then restraining them from doing so. It’s extremely stressful and injuries can be frequent, although you may not know it because it did not come from an actual accident but after they go back to the barn, you find cuts , scrapes, muscle strain and rub marks often. I saw them long time ago the day after a performance at a racetrack I was a horse groom at and I saw where some had been treated for minor injuries during the performance. Mind you the track was a lot larger and more open than these arenas but they still had some tight turns to maneuver because you don’t realize just how long a train they all are plus a huge wagon. I saw it all up close and it was impressive and I was in awe as to how gentle they were when I got to pet one and that’s why audiences love to see them, but now years later I see the reality of how sad it is to put them through pulling in smaller and smaller spaces like this. I cringe when I see stuff like this.

      We were trying to recommend bitless bridles to these teams, and one guy said due to liability issues, they wouldn't use bitless bridles. Mind you, they come in Draft horse size ..

    Love your style! Budweiser is at fault for pushing the horses to do more than simply drive the wagon around the arena in a straight line.

    You are right. Horses could have been set free in much less time if harnesses cut. But harnesses are very expensive. Seems horses easier & cheaper to replace than harnesses. If horses so well trained why didn't driver back the four remaining horses up instead of driving so close to the injured horse on the ground? Again, why pull harness out from under the injured horse instead of CUTTING IT OFF? I'm guessing grooms were instructed not to cut off or at least one would have.

    Rick,
    This isn't the first time a Budwiser team accident was captured on video. There is an even older rodeo clip of the driver sending them at a gallop around the end of a small arena. The horses turned in on themselves as they rounded the curve, just like this hitch did. It was an almost identical incident with the same results to the second and third teams.
    The announcer is there to soothe the audience into thinking that all will be well and they are still having a good time watching this fabulous display of "horshmanship."
    Yeah, right.

    I'm wondering if with the horse laying on the ground that long and being so heavy does his leg "go to sleep"like sometimes ours can do? This could hinder him getting up. and can cause damage if he stands up on it when it is asleep.
