My cairn looks just like this guy. No groomer here seems to know how to handstrip. So it is up to me to learn how. Looking at this video, I see very plainly how to tell what hair needs to come out. Very nicely done. I turned the volume down on the music, since I would not miss any instructions, and simply observed. This video was helpful. Thank you.

The powder I use is calcium bicarbonate, or in groomer's language 'trimming powder'. In fact, it's simply what pharmacies use to fill up the empty space in the pills they make themselves. It work's great!

knipknipvideootjes a bit of plain water or just wet hands makes it also easier and the loose hair will not fly as much :)
in summer i like to do it after my cairn went for a swim and is nearly dry again ~ she seems to enjoy it

Belgian professional groomers always use that belly strap. It's safer for the dog, it prevent them from falling of the grooming table.

Mine is all white so it’s hard to tell where the dead hair is at.

I use a stripping brush. A few min a couple of times a week. She maintains a beautiful med length rough coat. No prolonged sessions or stress and expense.

My cairn looks like a sibling of this one. I handstrip him on my lap while watching tv. He usually falls asleep. I only do a brief period and he will let me know when he has had enough. Since he is a retired show dog and I am simply a pet owner I do trim his chest and belly with thinning scissors. His original owner, who has had many champions, says he looks good. She advised me to use those finger cots on my thumb and forefinger. Also I use a nail polishing tool to handstrip his ears. The powder she is using is helpful but I heard that you should never handstrip a freshly bathed or wet dog as this can result in infection.
My groomer told me she would have to charge me a thousand dollars to handstrip my cairn, so I needed to learn how to do this myself.
This type of video would have been so helpful a couple of years ago.
Also, if you are not showing the dog you can use a grooming tool to clean up the undercoat.
If you are showing your dog then don't listen to anything I say. Lol.

I thought it was more harsh pulling but it wasn't like I imagined so I don't object to hair pulling now.

I agree with Tyllegirl: Annoying music!
I would be better that the person explained what she did and what she used for help.

+Mats Bubach That music is annoying would rather she talked her way though the trimming than listen to that music. My cairn looked just like this one going to try it today

To me it looks like the dog wasn't finished yet. F.i. the ears shouldn't be like that. Ok, the most of the old hairs are out but it doesn't look like the dog has a proper trim.
