    wow a groomer in the US that knows their wire coats! Pretty rare to see and a breeze of fresh air. In my country in Belgium it's standard to strip wire haired dogs. I've been handstripping cairns for 6 years and handstripping in general for about 8-9 years. This pup looks and acts just like my girl Charlie. Only difference is that her coat quality is better and no scissors only for between the pads. You rarely see such light coloured handstripped cairns, not over here at least. Cairns are just the best happy go lucky dogs and nothing better than a wire coat that is well cared for, it feels nice and smooth and sturdy. And it's so easy to clean. Mud and water just falls right off.

      The color is because the previous groomer was cheating. Because of that and the neutering, the coat is not as good as it should be.

    Great stuff, are these the same techniques you used on the German wirehaird pointer, never thought of using a stiff slicker brush

    • @grandestyledoggrooming
      @grandestyledoggrooming  Před rokem +2

      No. The techniques for the German Wirehairs is quite different. I groomed several Champion GWP. 2 were multiple group winners. Once the coat was pulled all the way down to the undercoat with those, the coat was worked over weekly pulling it into perfection, all in the ribbons at the AKC National, Westminster, and the GWP Nationals. I was very proud of that work. Each dog took 8-12 weeks to complete the fully groomed look.

    • @grandestyledoggrooming
      @grandestyledoggrooming  Před rokem +3

      I prefer to not wash a hand strip client at all, unless it’s just the legs and jacket. If they need a bath it’s best before the groom.

    I am taking a beginners class on handstripping in a couple weeks with Scott Wasserman. I was planning on bringing one of my customers dogs, cairn, but it's been clipped for years. The last time I groomed her, I did not clip but used the Andis fine tooth demat rake as recommended by Jennifer Bishop-Jenkins. It did a great job and my shop is amazed at how it works. Do you believe that same dog could be handstripped?

    • @grandestyledoggrooming
      @grandestyledoggrooming  Před 6 měsíci

      It would take a bit of time to turn the coat around, but a spayed coat is never as harsh or easy to work as a coat on a whole dog.

    Old time working terriers had correct coats that didnt need to be pulled out!

    • @grandestyledoggrooming
      @grandestyledoggrooming  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Actually, the work they did facilitated the removal of the coat. Professional Grooming has been done for hundreds of years, and hand stripping is no different than removing a winter coat from a horse, old time working dogs were still in need of proper coat care.

    Cute dog. I don't know where this idea came from, but I wouldn't want a dog subjected to it. I had Scotties and did a modified Schnauzer trim on them. They were cute and it was easier on us both. Just my opinion, and it doesn't count for much.

    • @grandestyledoggrooming
      @grandestyledoggrooming  Před rokem +13

      This method has been around since long before clippers. Wiry haired dog breeds were initially used for hunting small animals, with their rough and ready coats protecting them from sharp plants in the underground as well as from the vermin itself. The practice is actually healthier for the dog. Because the coat is dead, it needs to be removed and it doesn’t hurt.

    • @kirkshar
      @kirkshar Před rokem +2

      @@grandestyledoggrooming Isn't all hair and fur dead? It's the follicle that is live. You don't pluck ears, why is the coat different. I understand that history plays a part in what we do, but docked tails and ears were the fashion once too. You are a fantastic groomer and you love and produce beautiful dogs! I'm just curious why this still is the fashion. Even ratting, you'd think more coat would be better at protecting the skin. But, like I said, my thoughts are irrelevant. I watch to learn and share in all the kisses and love between you and the pups!

    • @grandestyledoggrooming
      @grandestyledoggrooming  Před rokem +5

      If the coat is ignored, it becomes soft, therefore not protectant. I guess dead was the wrong term. The hairs pulled are in the telogen phase and detached from the papilla.
      ABOUT WIRY COAT HAIR GROWTH
      There are 4 stages to wire hair growth,
      Anagen Phase: This is when hair follicles move into the GROWTH PHASE.
      Catagen Phase: This is the TRANSITION PHASE when hair stops growing and the outer root sheath attaches to the hair.
      Telogen Phase: The RESTING PHASE when the hair is at a standstill and does not grow or shed.
      Exogen Phase: The FALLOUT PHASE where the hair falls out and a new hair grows
      Once the hair is in the Telogen Phase then the dog is ready to be hand stripped, this is as the root follicle detaches from the dermal papilla allowing the hair to be pulled without causing harm or distress to the dog.

      As for the ear plucking, the breeds who usually have hair in the ear canal have hair and not fur. I would never hand strip a dog with hair, just as I will not pluck the “ hair “ in the ears. It’s comparing Apples to oranges.

    • @kirkshar
      @kirkshar Před rokem +1

      @@grandestyledoggrooming How do you know when the Telogen phase is reached? My Scotties didn't shed. I groomed just to give them the cute Scottie look. Please don't take offense, I love all you do, I'm just curious.
