    My dad and I before he passed away built a Glasair III with a Lycoming IO-540. The retract on that was pretty basic but the actual build took us about 2 years and I thought that was complicated!! Looking at you and the fine detail just blows my mind lol

    Nice to see a young man BUILD a plane rather than ARF. Not many kits still in production now days but Zirolli and a few others still have plans available .
    Your asking a lot of solder to hold up for the landing gear. Maybe consider brazing or Tig welding when it breaks , that type of weld will not break like solder will.
    Good job young man!!

    Thank you so much for making this excellent video. Now I understand how the long axle is rotated by a single servo and makes both gear retracts deploy without buckling. You didn't show forming the small "eyes" to make pivot points for the U shaped part, ( must be a combination of pulling and bending wire around a post and forcing it tightly around with vice grips and some profanity). I might try using a torch and silver soldering parts instead of soft soldering. "E-Challenged on RC Groups"

    A nice modifications. Soft solder joints must have been stronger than I would think. Nice finished model.

      i like foam, because i can build, and crash, for cheap . i love balsa, and have built many aircraft that way. it always feels a little wrong, like i am cheating when i use foam. you are not alone.

    • @kf4293
      @kf4293 Před rokem

      I use both. Balsa is for precision. Foam is for quick fun.
      I would happily let a kid fly my foam board trainer. Fatal crash? It was Dollar Tree foam!
      Thus, they both have their place.

    @windsurfer3329 Před 2 lety

    Your craftsmanship is great! The only thing I have a concern is soldering joint between the retract and the wheel axle. I guess you put too much confidence on solder. In a heavy landing, the axle may break! Take care.

    A hobby wire bending jig would have made bending the wire a lot easier, if you had one. Looks more like brass tubing not copper.

    I was amazed at how well the soft-soldered joints held up. Did you use common 60/40 tin/lead rosin core solder and rosin flux? What wattage iron did you use?. Surprised that the plastic wheel hubs didn't melt from soldering heat.

    • @TroyMcMillan
      @TroyMcMillan  Před 3 lety +1

      Ya I definitely was careful not to get the metal to hot to melt the tire. I used rosin flux I was surprised how well this worked for lading gear I had a view problems with the first few flights. But after all the landing revealed all the weak spots I was able to fix them up and have not had any other problems with it.

  • @glencrandall7051
    @glencrandall7051 Před 4 lety

    That is one very nice DC-3. The kit is impressive. Your build is impressive. Well done with the air frame. The design of your retractable gear is very well done. That's the good part. Your video production is not so good. All the fast forward makes it hard to see the detail of the landing gear parts. It would have been better to show just one side and say the other is the same. You have no mechanical connections. The butt joints and solder will eventually fail. Where you have butt joints, flatten the end of the wire and make a wrap.
