  • This is a Dare DC3 by Brodak
    This is my first build of a model plane like this. I have always been interested in RC planes and always wanted to build a model like this. I built this over the course of about 4 months. I built my own custom retracts using 1 full size HiTec servo, I added a light kit, and built a custom-made nose piece. This is the full version of the video. I will upload Taxi and Maiden flight soon.

    Even at warp speed, I learned a few things watching your build, both the balsa stuff and the covering.

    Wow 👏. So nice to see a traditional build. My dad used to fly the 'Dacota' in India in the RAF during ww2, and we used to scratch build RC slope soarers together, so double nostalgia here. I'm also about to invest in my first 3d printer and your channel has been a very valuable reference. Thank you, you're a very talented guy ! ... 🇬🇧

      Thank you so much! Amazing that your dad flew that plane. and what a great memory with the scratch builds. This new avenue with 3D printing RC planes is lots of fun, I hope you enjoy 😊

    Wonderful build. I'm particularly interested in the way you built your own retractable gear. I watched the retracting part about 20 times. excellent.

    My grandfather passed away almost a decade ago now and he had a few old Balsa Plane kits from the 70s. I have been trying to find a value for them but it has been impossible.
    He has a P-38 Lightning built
    A B25 Mitchell and a Corsair both still in their boxes. I'd like to build the Mitchell someday but I dont want to kill the value of it if it has any.

    My Sig40 never went together that fast and it was not as complex! Did the instructions give some suggestions on the covering sequence or did you just work one out? It looks great. Some of it went too fast. Did you say you designed your own nose? Thought you said kit had a plastic nose. That sock on the iron is really a must use item. Nice job!

  • @regenders
    @regenders Před 3 lety

    Good morning Troy, sorry if I disturb you but I wanted to ask you a question about engines. I wanted to know if you made the motors rotate in the opposite direction of each other and you put a reverse pitch propeller to compensate for the reverse rotation or the two motors rotate in the same direction and the propellers are the same pitch. Thank you and sorry for the inconvenience

    • @TroyMcMillan
      @TroyMcMillan  Před 3 lety +1

      No problem happy to help. Yes I did make the engines spin different directions. I used 7x5 propellers. The one on the left side is a (7x5 E) on the one on the right is a (7x5 EP). Make the props Spin downward as they are next to the fuselage. That makes the most amount of thrust close to the center of the plane. No Critical engine therefor. Cheers

    what kind of covering did you use? How was the visibility in the air? I am thinking of doing the Dare Ercoupe with that silver. Just wondered how much more difficult silver is for showing any imperfections and for visibility.

    • @TroyMcMillan
      @TroyMcMillan  Před 3 lety +1

      I used 2 roles of Chrome Monokote. It is ok for visibility I didn't have any problem seeing it but if you get it really far away I am sure it could be difficult. As far as imperfections this will definitely show them. Also if you over heat the covering with the iron or heat gun it will change the color of the covering so be carful how much you heat it.

      @@TroyMcMillan Great. I kinda figured it would be unforgiving. Looks really great though. Maybe the old bright orange covering will be a safer choice. Great work on the DC3! It's a beauty.

      @TroyMcMillan  Před 3 lety

      @@jefffozard3115 Yes I agree with the orange. Thank you for the comment. It was a fun plane to build it is mostly retired now but I still like to take it out a few times a year. It gets a lot of attention at the RC field. Good luck with your build.

      I used 450 size motor and order them from a company that is no longer in business. The size is a 2836 with 30amp ESC. DYS has a motor that size. There is a link in the video description to the parts I used. Cheers
