- I've learned a lot through failure, and I plan to learn a lot more! Failure is just unavoidable sometimes. But learning from others can reduce our failure risk. Some careful planning and sometimes just plain advice from those who have been there before us are pain reducing tools!
So I'll tell you the risk categories for my business as I see them, and how I think about each.
Good Works Tractors is happy to be sponsored by Rim Guard Solutions! This is perhaps the most well-known ballast brand on the market today. Rim Guard goes right inside your tires, so it's out of the way, it doesn't freeze, and doesn't corrode. It's made from natural materials, so it's safe around livestock and pets if it spills out. Rim Guard liquid ballast adds more weight to the back side of your tractor improving stability, loader performance, and power to the ground. Find your closest dealer at bit.ly/3d0whX0

So sorry you got scammed by Central Transport. I live in the Windsor Ontario Canada area (across from Detroit), Central is owned by the Maroun family. The same family that owns the Ambassador Bridge among many other things. They are notoriously known for their sleazy business practices around here and (allegedly) only operate Central as a tax cheat / loophole type of business, something about fuel. Glad you are putting the word out.
I know somebody who worked for this company (central transport) for a couple years. The company is a joke, and he told me multiple times that if you get your package and it's not damaged, you are very, very, very lucky. They simply do not care at all about the freight. The higher ups do not care at all about the employees and equipment, either.
Don't believe me?
The terminal he worked at had a dirt parking lot, with large pot holes in it. Two years ago one of the drivers got stuck in the truck, in the parking lot, in one of the large potholes that has been there for a long time that very easily could have been fixed or at least filled in a long time ago. During the process of trying to get unstuck, one of the tires on the tractor blew and came through the back window of the cab- killing the driver instantly. The other drivers decided that was too much, and they went home for the day. They came and took the guy's body away, and towed the truck away. The next day, work went on as normal as though nothing ever happened. The holes (including that one) were still never filled in.
@@wantsanewvehicle I used to go into their place regularly for my old job, the mechanic there was a great guy, he told me about what things were like there.

As a retired business owner (27 years) I find it discouraging that social media has become a double edged sword in the running of businesses. You strive to get good reviews and likes and worry about the negative reviews because people are too willing to criticize anonymously instead of having a person to go into a physical location and talk about a problem and giving owners/managers a chance to fix things. I do not envy your situation and have had great service and products from you. Good advice in this new generation of business models!
I really enjoyed this video. Out of your wheel house but so informative. I have been a business owner for the last 42 years so I really enjoyed this video. Thanks so much for posting it. It’s always good to know that you are not alone with these unforeseen costs. It really hit home with me in a couple of instances. Take care and what a awesome video.
I was in a business for over twenty years in two different fields and I found that if a person said they grew up on a farm they pretty much went to the top of the list as far as hiring. They all knew mechanical stuff, equipment and responsibility. Hiring is always a bit if a crap shoot but as you found out you can't doeverything yourself if you want to grow.
LIFT GATE: In that situation, just send payment "Without Prejudice" written in the RE: line of the check. Then file a lawsuit for the funds and claim fraud (which allows triple cost recovery) and seek punitive damages. Remember, if they do it to you then they did it to others and the others will support your case (your lawyer will know how to find the Others - it is easy and quick). NEVER let anyone take advantage of you like that. Simply pay it to get your products released and move on. Alternatively, your lawyer could go to court on an expedited "Ex Party" motion (ie without Notice to the other Party) and get a Court Order issued requiring the items be returned to you or delivered as contracted for. If they breach the Order then they can be held in contempt. Always have legal strategy ready for this sort of thing.
Years ago, when i was in graduate school, a professor recommended the book called "How to Read a Book." That degree called for a lot of reading, so it was a great recommendation. A lot of good hints, but the biggest take away was even if you read book that is difficult to read and you only get 30 percent out of it, you still are taking away 30 percent more than you had. This can be applied to CZcams videos, live lectures, and webinars.
Of course, i must close with a big congrats to the Texas Rangers and their unbelievable run in the post-season. I split my time now in DFW and Western Arkansas, and I must brag a little after all the years of really bad teams and disappointing play in years gone by 🎉🎉.
Central transport screwed over a company that I used to work for. A manufacturer went bankrupt and this company bought semi loads of product. The shipper was responsible for paying the freight and my company paid them for the freight. Somehow there was a dispute between the shipper and Central transport and the shipper said they weren't paying and goodbye we closed our doors. Central transport then went after the company who I worked for for thousands of dollars of shipping costs and threatened lawsuits. For years after that it was in the contracts that no shipments were allowed via Central transport and if a Central transport truck showed up we would refuse the shipment
Thanks for the very insightful look at your business and the considerations required to operate.
Subbed to your channel for the tractors and equipment. Stayed and am loving the recent videos on business decisions etc.
Cheaper is not always better. There are places that are cheaper than you, but they don't have the amazing customer service you have. Same goes for shipping companies.

A lot of people don’t realize how much goes into owning a business interesting insights.
Very informative video. There’s a lot that goes into running a successful business. I think you have an excellent handle on everything. Changing with the times and continuing to grow is critical. I really enjoyed the video. Thanks.
If you look back 10 years from now and things aren’t different, something is wrong. Things change so fast these days and never for the better for anyone. The customer always pays the extra costs in the end.
Central Transport doesn't throw away the freight they seize from you.
They sell it at the back warehouse in the duty-free store in Detroit when crossing the Ambassador Bridge into Canada. There's some crazy good deals to be had there!
Always enjoy these real life experiences JCB this etc thanks for keeping it real
Cute junkyard dog!
Wow. Powerful video.
Sounds like you need a fixer.
GWT, I have owned a truck for 17yrs in the fuel business and have delivered to CTI in Indy multiple times, everyone stay away from them. I deliver fuel to all the LTL carriers and used to work for one before I bought my first truck. A year ago XPO delivered a SweepAll to me that I purchased bc of you with code gwt, your welcome lol. I've been in transportation for 23yrs and an owner operator for 17, I'd be happy to help. Love the videos, watch everyone!
When are you stating a podcast? I would listen to it. Your great!
First, let me sa this video is awesome. There are so many things I want to comment about. So I'm sure I'm going to make a few posts here. Thank you for posting this video about the INS and outs nuts and bolts of how running a company works. I very much appreciate that. You mentioned other companies. There are stuck in the 1950s in the 1960s. And you said that you will leave them in the dust. Have you given thought to maybe actually buying one of these companies and bringing it up to speed? With the current times
Great video! Thanks for sharing!

I have put a lot of central transport trailers in and out of the docks at work and they are ragged trailers that I would hate to have to pull them down the road.
It's frustrating enough when you order something and they give you no delivery option other than the one you already know will not deliver to your rural area... even Amazon is a 100% miss at the local post office if your shipment contains electronics of any sort. Can only imagine having to deal with it on a large scale.
WOW. Think I'd got a Lawyer. They are known to be totally shady. Now that Yellow went bankrupt CT is top Shady. 🤣🤣
Back before I knew better I ordered a finish mower from TS. The morning it was supposed to be delivered I got a call from the shipper asking if I had a fork truck or a loading dock. After telling them no, they responded that they would have to send it on a truck with a lift gate. Wonder what that cost TS.
Interesting. I had a piece of equipment delivered this summer, I did not pay for lift gate, but the driver showed up and unloaded it with a lift gate. I had my tractor with pallet forks waiting for him and could have just as easily just pulled it directly from the truck.
Sometimes the drivers are just cool guys. I had a piece of equipment delivered a couple weeks ago (not from GWT, and not tractor related :) ) and the driver showed up in a box truck. They were supposed to call before they showed up but didn't, and I was pulling in just as he was getting ready to unload at end of the driveway and I ask him "Hey, can you can take it down here to where I'm going to store it?" I have a standard concrete driveway and a dirt driveway that 53' semis used to come down to pick up loads of live chickens. He says they're not supposed to go on people's driveways because of liability reasons, they might get sued, etc. I looked at him and said "Look, we're both adults here. I understand where you're coming from, but this driveway is meant for heavy trucks, you've got plenty of turn around space, and it'll be easier for both of us." And he says "Cool, let's do it." So we go down there, I fork the load off the truck rather than him having to mess with the liftgate and pallet jacking it around, etc. We talked for a few minutes, and he's just a cool guy. THAT's the kind of people I like working with.
I drive a flatbed truck for Northern Logistics based out of Clare. They have a yard in a Grand Rapids. I don’t know if we would be a good fit for your needs, can’t say we would be the cheapest, but there are no issues with integrity and service.
FYI. R+L carrier does that. They showed up to drop off a attachment for my tractor an if I wasn’t paying attention he was getting ready to drop the lift gate as I came out with my tractor to get it. An he told me if he would of got the lift gate flipped out an not I’ve down it was a 300 dollar charge that I would have to pay before they would give me my product. Needless to say I wasn’t happy but the driver said it was company policy which I wasn’t upset with him. He was just doing his job but like I told him I wish someone would say something before they ship it like that so everyone could have something in place so they don’t get hit with a charge out of nowhere
A lot of what you’re talking about is business continuity. I’d be happy to help if you’re ever looking to increase resiliency.
I believe you. I am a truck driver and this company is bad news
Did the customer actually get lift gate service, even if you did get billed for it? I doubt it.
Having a business is like keeping a speeding train from derailing every day😅
You sure have been getting it in the back side regular lately
I will not use UPS for shipment from the US. They burn me badly. In most cases their charges are more than my product. I think this is one reason you do not ship to Canada.
Business is mental…..
“A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit; neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
“Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” (Matt. 7:15-20.)
I guess that transport company forgot that one
Central Trashport !!!
I would like to hear Central Transports side of. The story
Central Transport are crooks. Always have been. I worked for Central Transport as a contractor for a few years. The company operates on no moral values whatsoever. Saw them screw over many receivers and shippers.
Risk adverse. Do not own a business in a democrat controlled city or state. Hire great employees and do not micro manage them. Hard to forecast going into a recession. Good talk. Do a Yelp review on Central Transport.
Fire the guy in charge of proof reading the video title! Unless it’s you or Chris then just a stern talking to.🤭
