  • Tractor Hydraulics: It's a confusing world with terms being used interchangeably that shouldn't be. Rear remotes, 3rd Functions, Diverters, Multipliers, Power Beyond. We'll walk you through the parts of a tractor that uses hydraulics and give you an overview of the terminology so you can be confident when evaluating a tractor for purchase on just what it has, what it can do, and what it's worth. We'll also cover how to add hydraulics yourself and what attachments rely on hydraulic functions.

Brief Descriptions of Common Tractor Hydraulic Components:
3rd Function Kits: These are most frequently added to a tractor to control a loaded mounted grapple or an angling snow plow. Something attached to your loader that has a hydraulic cylinder that needs to be controlled. Typically, you'll push a button on your loader joystick to operate.
Rear Remotes: These are found on the back side of the tractor, generally mounted somewhere above the 3-point hitch. The control is usually a lever that is mounted on the left or right side of the operator station. These hydraulics can be used to connect and operate a hydraulic top link, hydraulic side link, or hydraulic functions found on attachments such as a hydraulic angling blade or hydraulic chute rotation on a 3-point snowblower.
Hydraulic Multipliers: Many times, one rear remote isn't enough. If you have a hydraulic top and tilt kit plus a rear attachment that has one or more hydraulic functions, then you can quickly run out of connections! A hydraulic multiplier turns one rear remote into 2, 3, 4, or 6 rear remotes. You can buy the size you want based on your needs. It is a hydraulic valve block with solenoids and switches (mounted on the operator station). By selecting a switch and then using your normal rear remote lever, you will operate that function.
Power Beyond: Power Beyond is a type of open-flow hydraulic circuit. This means that when you connect hoses to these hydraulic outlets, the hydraulic fluid will freely flow through the lines. Whereas on a 3rd function or rear remote, you control the operation with a button on the loader joystick or a lever on the operator station, Power Beyond doesn't have controls. Instead, the attachment that is plugged into Power Beyond has these controls. The most common example of this setup is a backhoe. You mount the backhoe to the back of your tractor, connect the hydraulics, sit on the seat, and use the two levers on the backhoe to control the hydraulic functions.

I have a compact tractor for yard work, and I bought a hydraulic top link a couple of years ago, thinking it would save me some time and effort adjusting the angle of attack for my rear blade. I had no idea how useful I would find it. It makes it much easier changing implements; it makes it much easier to use implements. I use it about 4 or 5 times as much as I thought I would. It's super useful. I can remember thinking "do I really need it?" Now I would simply hate to have to go without it. I've thought about having a diverter too...maybe I will have another look.

Last year I watched many of your videos to learn and compare tractors. I ended up buying a JD 3035D with front loader bucket, fork lift and root grapple. The Dealership did work with me since I bundled the tractor and implements. The root grapple has been my number one tool and bucket the least used tool improving the farm. The fork lift has already helped pay for itself shipping large items directly to my home. The fork lift has many purposes without the need for a pallet, hoist, remove a large engine for instance.
I'm going to get the top link for the rear, you proved it would help scrapping and using a box blade on unlevel ground. Of course I'll need the SCV's, lines and ports. I live in a hilly area so adjusting the top link manually has to be done often for good results, PIA. Thank You and your team for all the educational videos, they really help educate, enlighten and hopefully reduce the costly and deadly mistakes to owning and using tractors.

Deere had a diverter valve kit that ran a top ‘n tilt kit with the loader joystick. That worked pretty well and there was no need to setup a tractor (especially a smaller machine) with 6 SCVs.
Also, some PTO chippers could utilize a power beyond kit instead of having their own pump and reservoir.

I take the loader off my 100 horse chore tractor regularly during summer for doing hay so it’s out of the way for turns by fences and less compaction then put it back on to pick up the bales when finished for that cutting in the field. Also if something fails and the is designed for quick removal the loader can be removed a lot easier in undesirable locations provided you have extra hoses, some boards for the legs to set on if on ground where it can sink, and a second tractor which saved me a huge hassle when cleaning up in my woods before. Even if I planned on keeping the loader on 99% of the time the quick attach saved me once and the local dealer doesn’t charge labor for loader removal on repair bills if it’s a quick connect

On the Kioti CK series (cabs only) you get 2 set of hydraulics. One is for your normal hydraulic function while the second hydraulic port is essentially the power beyond because the handle for that port has a detent which keeps it engaged. The front loader handle on the new CK 20 series already has the 2 buttons and is pre-wired for a 3rd function kit.

  • @byronmill
    @byronmill Před 4 měsíci

I personally prefer the diverter valve option for the grapple control for the loader as opposed to the true third function option. By diverting the flow of the second function to use for grapple control you have the ability to feather the grapple function speed. But when using the third function kit It is either full flow or off, there's no way to feather the hydraulic flow and it makes it very erratic control. I find very few instances when there's a need to actually roll/curl functions and the grapple functions at exactly the same moment.
We installed the Summit diverter valve kit on a John Deere 4520 compact with 400 loader. We use it for both the grapple and front mounted pusher blade with power side angle for snow removal. Very happy with it. When we originally acquired the tractor it was using the rear remote for the third function control on the loader and that was virtually unusable as you so accurately described when showing that option on the one John Deere tractor.

Love your videos. I've been dreaming of a hydraulic top link on my orange L3201, You've got me getting more serious. I currently have a 3rd function that is routed to the front for a grapple. I don't have a grapple, nor do I ever expect to need one for my little Hunting lease. I'm contemplating robbing the 3rd function up front and simply running lines to the rear, While leaving the "Future grapple" lines in place. Tractor had a backhoe in the past and the bracket and actual connectors are still there. Any reason this wouldn't be a cheap, easy way to add a hydro toplink with only the cost of the top link and two hoses? (The 3rd function button is already there and working).

the correct term for your "SCV" is spool valve....and a third function is a valve that diverts the output of the spool valve, either electrically or manually.....nothing complicated in hydraulics, dont make it sound so, your calling things 1st,2nd, 3rd, etc functions is totally incorrect, they are called circuits, and each circuit is controlled by a spool valve, and each circuit can have a 3rd function valve in it

Please stop using a swish or whack sound when you put an info slide onto the screen! It is super annoying.

I think is sad and wonderful that you break this down to such basic things and terms.
I grew up on a farm and can’t believe how little the average American knows about things so that’s the sad part.
The wonderful part is given that fact, you have taken the time to break this down so ANYONE that should be near equipment at all, will understand things from the basics on up.
    👍🫡💯

Remember that there are billions of things you know nothing about as well. Go find something new and learn about it. The goal should be to never stop learning, always gaining more knowledge. The folks watching this video are getting smarter.
