@@2011Tatin I didn't think it was THAT ugly. But bulky, yes.
The inner side where the screens are located, actually looked pretty cool, has an early 2000s feel. Mario Kart DS and Kirby somehow felt more fun on the original model. The silver finish reminds me of the GBA SP.
The ugliest part is the outside, looks like a weird brick or a makeup case. Unusual design choice even for that era.

To all who care, the DSi does have exclusive games that aren't on the original DS or DS Lite. The DSiWare is available on the 3DS as well, but no longer available on the DSi unless you mod it and only legally if you dump it from a 3DS. A modded DSi can also play DS and GBA roms off of the internal SD card without a flash cart. I don't like how DS games look on the 3DS so I use a modded DSi to play both physical games and roms, then if I want to play GBA roms my favorite way to do it is also my DSi.

If you hold the start button on a 3DS while a DS game is booting it plays in the native resolution rather than the pixaleted mess that it usually starts in, but it takes up less of the screen so if that's a bother then yeah I use my DS Lite to play DS games cause it just works better

    • @NottJoeyOfficial
      @NottJoeyOfficial Pƙed 4 lety +3

I know, I don't like how they look like that either, it's so small with a lot of black space. I have a 3S XL so that's a lot of wasted screen space and looks worse than if you don't do that to me. Like you, since I have a normal DSi XL anyways I just play on there. I love it and the ability to play DS roms and DSiWare and GBA games on it is great. The 3DS is great as a backup or second device though, like when I go out and only want to take one device or if the battery on my DSi dies.

A modded DSi can only run a few GBA titles at good speeds and minimal glitches (and with working saves) It's really not worth the hassle, if you're interested in GBA games, you're way better off with a hacked 3DS since it can run GBA games natively. But besides that, yeah, a modded DSi with Twilight Menu is the ultimate way to play DS games.

    Some other games I'd recommend on the DS for sure;
Mario and Luigi: Partners in time which is a prequel to Bowser's inside story. A lot of people don't like it but I love it.
Nintendogs is a surprisingly very fun game! I love looking after dogs even if it's virtual.
Zelda: Spirit Tracks is a game you should definitely try, especially if you liked Phantom Hourglass (I loved both)
The Legend of Spyro: a new beginning was a very interesting game I remember from my childhood which I unfortunately have never finished as I lost the cartridge. I would definitely recommend.

The DS lite is more glossy and I’d say the DSi goes for a matte finish. Incase you don’t wanna buy a card for ROM hacks you could use a random SD card on your DSi which can be convenient. But the DS lite is backwards compatible with the game boy but then again homebrew could let you get different gameboy games in the DSi.

If you're looking for a DS, and don't mind the upscaling (experimentation is going on to fix the hardware upscaler), the 3DS is by far the way to go. Often times you don't even need a flash cart to get where you want to go, homebrew utilities like TWiLightMenu (a frontend for the extremely clever nds-bootstrap software, which uses the 3DS hardware as a pseudo-flashcard for the 3DS's DS hardware) to do the DS game running, and an on-device baremetal utility like GodMode9 to take your physical carts and dump the ROMs (among numerous other functions), it's really among the best ways to *carry* your DS games.
TWiLightMenu also runs on DSi, DSi XL, and DS flashcards (though it's less useful there, since the card does all the work)

3DS has to be THE ultimate retro machine as far as playing Nintendo games go. It can flawlessly play GB, GBA, DS and of course 3DS games and due to being relatively small it's much more portable than Switch. On top of all that you can easily install CFW on it which opens so many new possibilities and features it's simply amazing. Want to play Genesis games? CFW makes it possible. Want custom themes? Easy. Maybe you feel like backing up your games and saves just in case? You can do that too. Want to play that one game that's available only in Japan but can't due to region lock? Modded 3ds can allow you to do just that. Heck, you can even play DOOM on 3DS with CFW.

You can also backup game carts to .cia files and install them to your SD card (that's what I did with all my DS/3DS games) You can even take a piece of software on the PC and convert .gba files to .cia and install them as native applications (although they don't support sleep mode). I don't support piracy except in the case of the games themselves not being readily availible or something I wasn't going to buy any ways but I still wanted to putz around with for a few minutes. If the GBA games were availible in a digital storefront I would abosolutely purchase them but it seems like many golden oldies won't ever make it to any digital storefront.

Whos Joe Agreed, I have a DSi and New 3DS XL and the DSi isn't really that interesting anymore. I still own one as I don't want to get rid of it due to Zelda Four Swords Anniversary and having one of the systems from the DS family outside of the 3DS is nice (and if I'm not in the mood for using the Stick/up for dealing with the New 3D XL's larger form factor I can use my smaller DSi, also it's sad I sold the Cyan/Light Blue DS original with Mario Kart stickers on the back of the top screen I had for a DSi now, I've never had a Lite :( but I've wanted one since I got into collecting games more).
The Lite having GBA support is more interesting then the DSi's features (Camera, Sound, Photo Viewer/Photo Manipulation, no access to DSiWare or DSi Shop, more so DSi games on the 3DS eShop though from what I've heard/seen in 3DS videos) as they are included with the 3DS/2DS line and the DSi, the only reason to get a DSi is maybe to have a feeling of a Portable Wii but otherwise I don't see a reason even as someone that owns one.
I only have mine still because Zelda Four Swords Anniversary is on it and haven't tried using an SD to move it [don't know if I can] (and I didn't have a 3DS of any kind until literally a month ago when I got one since I wanted one for a while [like the Vita] and the system isn't relevant anymore so I thought I'd jump at it if the games will be harder to find and they are mostly cheap now compared to before, otherwise or I can't get them at EB Games/Gamestop anymore and my local options while good only offer so much and I don't buy much online, doing the same with the Wii U now as the Switch is more relevant, might as well take a chance) and I had this DSi for a long time up until my New 3DS XL (so I keep my DSI around if I want to play DS games how they are intended or with a smaller size system besides having a reason to keep Zelda Four Swords Anniversary on it).
      Sorry for the repeats.

Gameboy Advance backwards compatibility on the Lite will always make it king to me. Just super glad it's the cheapest one you can buy, which definitely won't last forever. It's the single best authentic Nintendo console for playing Game Boy Advance games since the ergonomics destroy the Gameboy Advance AGS-101 and so does the battery life, not to mention the extra DS game library. At $35-$60 each for the Lite but $140+ for the AGS-101, it's a no brainer. I'll be buying a few dozen extra Lites for when they eventually start to rocket upwards and become unaffordable and difficult to find.

Dollar for dollar, the original DSi is the best value to functionally of the DS and 3DS models.
The DS Lite systems are becoming more and more expensive as time goes on, and with the hinge problems, spongy buttons, shoulder buttons that are prone to failure and primative UI interface it's debatable wether or not the GBA slot justifies the purchase nowadays.
Not only is the DSi considerably cheaper (between $25 - $40 in good condition as opposed to the $60 - $80 for DS Lites or the original 2DS), it feels like a more premium system, has incredibly fast processing speeds and a clean Wii-like interface. On top of this, with modern advancements in emulation, not that you would but a modded DSi (which is easy to do) can emulate 90% of all availible DS titles and a sizeable amount of GBA, NES and Game Boy titles with few issues.

@@Clara_Page I don't know how TN and IPS compare 1 to 1 with the other models, but comparing my Majora's Mask «new» 3DS XL to my OG 3DS the difference is significant, definitely not as saturated as my monitor, but it's good.
When I put the big one at 4 brightness, it's around the 5 of OG. The difference isn't as pronounced this way, but it's kind of a clarity thing now, even putting the XL further. It's hard to look at OG screen after this somehow. A combination of a worse panel type (or just simply a lower screen size)? Is it what you're referring to?
Though the lower TN screen is worse than those on OG 3DS, it's more yellow and unevenly so. The upper may be a bit yellow, but I feel like the OG's white temperature is too cold. It's a lottery either way, apparently.

The sheer amount of games was amazing back then. Especially Mario and Pokemon were great. Sinnoh is still my favourite region due to it's map design, music, story and everything. Also I've played Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story and reeeeally liked it, so I'd definitely recommend you playing it, if you haven't yet.
One problem the fat DS had though was that the touchscreen kinda shifted so your presses were registered far more to the left or right than your actual press. I don't know if it's possible to fix that because it seems like it's a hardware problem.
However, the DS still is an amazing sytem to this date and that is mostly thanks to it's great game library.
Also the video was really nice. I really liked how you went over every single model there is. Also the several inserts into different games and franchises was really interesting as well. Overall a really nice video. I really enjoyed it.

The original DS and DSi xl is just too big for me to comfortably carry, and I just hate the feel of the DS lite's buttons. They have this weird spongy, squishy feel about them which makes playing games like Super Mario 64 DS really hard. The only problem with the DSi in my eyes is I'm constantly scared I'm going to break the shoulder buttons. This issue affects pretty much every model, but seems to be especially prominent in the DSi, plus my R button already squeaks when I press it down.

(Mario kart ds credits song plays)
(Oh, And i recorded me opening my presents last Christmas so a clip of me getting a pink 3ds in 2019 is up on youtube, if you wanna see it) (i would leave a link to that video in this comment but i am typing this on the youtube app on my i pad soooo... instead i will just advise you to click my channel icon to go to my channel then scroll down until you see a video title that says “Sammy opens more Christmas presents” or something along those lines, then once you see that title and a thumbnail if a happy family’s Christmas, click on the video and skip to the part where i shiw off a 3ds case) (yeah) (bye)

If I'm honest 3ds is the best choice in games backwards compatibility and homebrew
The dsi and ds kinda are lacking in my opinion with homebrew and games plus and like most care about guitar hero
And u didn't mention that dsi and 3ds are region locked

U can remove region lock via homebrew pretty easily which I guess might have been in his thoughts an obvious statement
