my 2007 dslite still holds a charge seemingly forever.

They last forever. Mine still works properly. Battery lasts as long as new.

i like the psp as well , but the ds has much better battery performance (life)
It's no surprise the DS was such a hit. A great library of games, two screens, long battery life and backwards-compatibility with the GBA made for a system that you could take anywhere, and play almost anything that you'd want to. Plus, local area multiplayer without the need for WiFi is a feature that has taken many hours of my time in the past.

FlashMe? Haven't heard of that in a while, I remember building the flashing tool with a toothpick and aluminum foil! Good times.
I remember using FlashMe just so I didn't have to deal with the "Touch the screen to continue" when the system turned on. No reason other then that, I just thought it was cool.

They’ve actually been relatively supportive of the 3ds compared to the GBA and the DS.
I cant see nintendo releasing a new ds now that the switch is out it would compete with the switch they will either have the switch to take over or we will havr to wait till next gen when the switch is done but if they do then they cant releasw a hybrid system again it will affect switch sales

Its the successor because its the next console after the predecessor, not due to features like backwards compatibility or if they both use the same/similar storage mediums.

Mate, just wanted to say that I've been loving your content - it's just so inspiring what human ingenuity can achieve. Great to see you breathing life into these old platforms and telling the history of how all this happened.
I still can't believe just how timeless the DS Lite design remains. It still looks sleek and modern. Its D Pad is also my favorite due to its sponginess. I've got like 4 stashed out cuz I know they're getting their due mileage for years to come.
Fun fact:Jenesis DS was actually used with permission by Sega for Sonic Classic Collection. Being okay with fan projects is one thing but a company officially using a fan emulator with permission is honestly just impressive.
It's badly emulated though. Sonic Classic Collection has constant slowdowns that weren't on Genesis

@@popsiclewizard8068 i have to disagree with the launch of cloud based gaming. I'm not talking about stadia since that was shit but project xcloud is looking to be hit. Remote play, (although Idk if it really counts) is also becoming a thing for mobile devices.

I actually found my DS lite with 4 games at a yard sale a few months back for $10. I have an R4 in slot 1 for my NDS games and some homebrew and an EZflash in slot 2 for all my GB, GBA and NES games. It's a real beast.
man.... the homebrew and hacking scene those days... they were so chill. WAYY less drama, and just plain fun to run these hardware flashcarts especially the GBA

I've been using the same R4 card on my DS since 2006, and I love it. Some of my favourite "apps" include:
-DSReader - a great ebook reader with plenty of options.
-nesDS - NES emulator that lets you rewind games in real-time.
-Colors - a nice art program.
-ZXDS - ZX Spectrum emulator, which uses the bottom screen as a virtual keyboard.

that's mainly what i use mine for! i had quite a shock when testing some GBA repros on an OG GBA with how dark the screen was! the DS Lite is a god send for the ultimate GBA experience

@@apoplexiamusic Not exactly, all ds software runs fine on the 3ds, but the fact that ds games don't fully fill the screen kind of purturbs me I know that's kind of a nitpick, but that's just a turn off in my opinion.
@@apoplexiamusic playing DS games on the 3DS sucks. Because the resolution is 1.25x higher (not an integer), DS games look soft/blurry. They look much better on a DS or DSi.

@Holo Scope, why are you pirating 3ds CIAs? FUN isn't illegal in it of itself but downloading 3ds CIA's from any site is just wrong. It wasn't the original intent of the modders. I just use GM9 and FBI to dump my game cartridges and download them.
Moonshell was so much fun back in the day. It really opened my eyes to what homebrew was. I had a ps1 that could play burnt discs and I played some emulators on the og Xbox but it felt different seeing what was possible on a handheld in 2005. It was really exciting and a ton of fun, and a great community

lol i find it kinda ironic how in 2011 my parents bought me a homebrew chip instead of any actual games, still had hella fun with that megamind game, barbie, m&m game, super Mario 2, weird hamster game, and a whole lot of other really weird games
i love how this channel inspires me to mod my consoles again. Things have changed so much since the simple days of the PS2 with constant firmware updates i always worry im gonna end up with a banned or bricked console

Fascinating to hear about the history of hacking the slot 1. Late in the Ds's life was so great for the homebrew community! This was my childhood (with the great Acekard)! Moonshell was the ultimate app for a kid who didn't have a mp3/media player. It turned the NDS into something comparable to phones at the time, playing back midi/mp3s/and video files. There was also this awesome homebrew mega man game, that was short, but was tons of fun and it included a level editor. Oh, and Lemmings, allowing all of the retro level packs and more to run on the NDS! Thanks so much for covering this!
I really appreciate that when you replay SD content, you do it with scanlines and an old style TV as the borders. I just think that's really cool and that I should mention it, so, thanks.

I've loved my OG launch DS the games and the chat and everything, and nearly 10 years ago i got my first R4 card it blew my mind on what the DS could do and the homebrew community. When Quake DS released i gave it a go instantly.
I literally just bought my friends DS lite off of him yesterday to do homebrew, and was having a hard time finding a good video on it. You are the best there is!!

The DS has backwards compatibility, so it can run doom for GBA, a official port
Definitely my most favorite and often used homebrew for this system was MoonShell2, a multipurpose media player that actually used the ActImagine video codec used by a lot of DS games to run rudimentary video playback. The quality was terrible, and things were bitcrunched horribly, but it worked! And it could go over 125% of the DS Lite's max volume without distortion. For an MP3 player before the 3DS, it was a godsent.
Well... When I updated moonshell and its softwares back then I noticed that the image quality got better but I still dont know till this day if it was the software or the moonshell updated rom fault.

I remember that the DS was THE Homebrew machine. Instead of only hacking to run roms it had a really big library of homebrew. The programmers loved that device!
Before emulators and ports on Android with more recent phones, the DS Lite was my favourite device for the task by far. It was so capable, light, and a pleasure to use.
Such a great device. Amazing design and lots of fun to have even years after its release. Perfect review!

I hope that if you talk about the Dsi/3ds you HAVE to cover *TWiLightMenu* 🤩, especially if you are going to talk about the Dsi, where you can run ROMs and homebrews *without any flashcard* in the more powerful TWL mode using Unlaunch and Hiya CFW... The Dsi has a lot of potential!

I got a nearly perfect condition ds lite from a car boot sale, and took the buttons from a broken silver one, and put them in my black one. It looks really good!

I love these homebrew videos that show off what each system is capable of. You really go through the research and put all that information together in a video and it teaches me a few things I didn't know about.
I'm on the verge of selling my DS Lite because I have many homebrew'd systems and I never use the DS lite at all. My 3DS replaces my DS lite, being capable of playing GBA and DS games natively. As well as emulating snes and sega genesis perfectly. And I only plan on getting another 3DS if anything were to happen to my current one. Bottom line, I don't need a DS lite personally but I agree that it's a great homebrew system, it kept my busy back in the day.

Oh boy am I glad you are doing a video on the 3ds. I've been with that community for years and have hacked so many 3ds I can't even count. Having a fresh breath of life for that community would be amazing and maybe a few more ports of games and tools will be made. Very excited for that video.
Same, i kinda want just a little more from the 3ds, i own a switch, but a modded 3ds just has too much use for me to ingore it.
This takes me back. I had one of the earlier R4 clones and a crimson red DS Lite. At the time, there weren't really any good homebrew games that I can remember being good enough to keep on my expensive 2GB Micro SD card. If anything, the coolest part about the homebrew scene was the "applications". I can distinctly remember having a homebrew MP3 player that looked like an iPod, a Voice-Over-IP (SIP) client, a video player, and a fairly functional web browser. You have to remember that this was before smart-phones were a thing and, as a 12 year old, I felt like a super bad ass being able to make phone calls, watch movies, listen to music, and browse the web from a device with a touchscreen that could fit into my pocket! The fact that the DS was never "meant" to do any of those things was the ultimate cherry on top.
The feeling of having "hacked" the DS had a huge impression on my young mind; I consider it to be one of just a few reasons why I ended up in the Cyber Security industry.
Anyways, nice video. I also really enjoy your other content which talks about how each of the platform's security protection was eventually defeated.
Quake and Quake II run semi-decently, and they even work with mods and network play!
You can even play a network game between WiiQuake, DSQuake, and PC Quake.
@@cyberman7348 Yep! It's a homebrew called Quake Wii GX, and it even has Metroid Prime style pointer controls. It runs really smoothly and has full mod/network support.

Your intro music style reminds me of the classic animated movies like the 1986 Transformers. Love it.
I used to sit in the tech building of the college I attended with my Electric Blue DS and play Mario Kart and Animal Crossing between classes. Having come from a family which couldn't afford a computer during my childhood and adolescence, which caused me to miss out on early online gaming, it was incredible to be able to hop onto the college WiFi with this wonderful little Nintendo device and race people in Japan.
It's a shame that the lower screen on the Lite yellows considerably over time.

DS had a phenomenal homebrew scene once the slot 1 devices came out. Man those were the days. Most (all?) of the R4 clones use compatible firmware so play around with what's available online.
I hope you talk about the SuperCard DSTWO(+) brand of Flashcards that actually have an on-board CPU that add to the DS' processing power making SNES emulation much better and even GBA emulation through Slot-1 a possibility. Great video as always!

This right here. I managed to save enough money for a 2DS but then my relative gave me a game(which I didn't like) so I ended up selling it got a 2DS XL. Installed CFW and haven't regretted it since
About 6 months ago they were about £20 in the uk now it's around £40 here.
I was dumb enough to pay about 75 dollars for a dark blue nintendo ds lite in 2017 . I didn't know much about Nintendo consoles back then . Well it was in a very good condition can't lie about that . Also got the box , R4 Card which hasn't hit timebomb in these 3 years , manual and charger . But still at max it's worth about 45 dollars I think
I was lucky to snag one with 8 games and a case for 1 dollar a few months ago at Goodwill unfortunately its pink though

My uncle bought a DS Lite for my grandfather back when it first launched. My grandfather only used it once and it has been at near full battery ever since.
I have a DS lite that hasn't been used in over a year, grabbed it to play for a bit of nostalgia, expecting it needing a charge. Turned it on and behold the green light of greatness!
True build quality
Please adress the timebomb problem regarding these cards. The fix is easy too.
This was 1 year ago, but you can adjust the time back to bypass the timebomb. Example: April 4 2020 today, right? You need to put the time back to 2006 or so with the DS Time setting. I hope you understood this solution because it's so hard to explain ;-;

First of all, don't buy a R4 Card with a year put in the card because it will most likely have a timebomb (Example: R4i SDHC RTS Lite 2020). If you so happen already have an R4 Card with timebomb, you have 2 solutions: Change the date before the timebomb activate or change the firmware/kernel into a YSmenu. YSmenu doesn't look as pretty as the nornal R4 firmware but it will fix the timebomb issue and skins is way easier to make and install.

You guys don't get it, the point of the time bomb isn't to brick the cart, it's meant as a reminder for you to update the kernel. If you get a timebomb you have to uninstall the kernel, whilst putting the games on it to a seperate file and install the new kernel to the sd cart, then put the games you preserved earlier back on the cart and done, thats the point of the timebomb.
DSi homebrew is interesting as well. Not sure that there's enough to talk about to make a video, but worth looking at.
I've got a DSi with an R4 that has been in my service since 2013 - battery still lasts forever and the games are still more fun than anything on iOS.
I had a couple of flashcart setups, one was called the G6 4G which used the GBA slot (I had the flashcart for my gameboy micro anyway) and it used a pass through chip in the DS game slot. To write roms to it it used proprietary software and a GBA to usb adapter. The next card I got was called the M3 ultra and that was really cool, jumping to micro SD like the R4 Gold, the convenience of just drag and drop blew my mind back then.
It was a setup that served me well, I had a web browser on it, a homebrew ipod app with the scroll wheel functionality, and of course lots of games. It essentially made my DS into a smartphone way before smartphones were widely adopted.

Just a quick note: The kernel used on these bootleg R4 carts have a timebomb inside, so after a time (few months in general), the cart becomes unusable (that's the reason R4SDHC releases a new model every year). However, some users from GBATemp Forum created a custom kernel for these carts, with better interface, better compatibility and without the timebomb.
The DS is a very good console to emulation, despite the slowdown problems, it's a good Way to play retro games on the go. Some other good emulators for the DS is NitroGrafx (Turbografx-16/PC-Engine), Lameboy (Game Boy and Game Boy Color) and nesDS (NES).

@@Jokypond It's just a name given for these carts, they stop working after a few months. It can be rectified either with a custom kernel install or by resetting your ds to an earlier date, because they check the date of the ds.

@@kevinleite6309 Yeah, OP made a mistake. Should have stated that SOME can have timebombs. An original R4 is extremely hard to come by nowadays, some of them are just clones, and a lot of the clones can have timebombs in them
I made a whole album using NitroTracker on a DSTwo cart. The album got publish under Piko Piko Detroit. I made my own sound effects that I got from old Nintendo games & used them all in Nitro Tracker.

Paid $5 for a DS Lite. BIG steal. Definitely gonna be doing some homebrewing on it. Especially came with 6 games.

DSx86 is one of my favourite emulators on the DS, i can run almost any PC game from the 80s, and early 90's think Wolf3D etc.

You should take a look at "colors!" for nintendo DS.
I still use it for drawing.
Also, theres a "portal" port for DS wich I think is very good. I never thought that the DS was capable of running something like that.
The NEOGEO emulator is also very good but you need to convert the rom first.
Using a flashcart to hack a 3DS and carry all my DS games is my favorite thing ever. Bought a 3DS just for that. I'll have to check out some classic DS homebrew too!
I love carrying my entire NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, DS, 3DS, VB, Genesis, MS, TG16 (and more) libraries with me all on a single cart!

I did run some homebrew on my DSi using an R4DS card. Those were good times!
And I did try out DSLinux on it as well. It was pretty cool, and it was kind of a shame that the project died so fast.

I remember installing an Ebook reader and a comic book reader on my NDS Lite. I even used the comic book homebrew in an emergency to prepare for exams. Good Memories!

Runter Ranger It’s one of the easier gens and is mostly story focused. Nearly all the Pokémon you encounter are entirely new ones, this made most people upset but I liked seeing Game Freak try new things. It’s a you love or you hate it type of game. But in my opinion it has the best story and ost in all Pokémon games.

Pretty sure the prevalence of flash carts killed a ton of game sales but helped sell a lot of consoles. Nintendo consoles still remain fairly easy to crack and emulate today.
Have you ever considered doing a homebrew episode for the Dreamcast? I have played around with the NesterDC homebrew and its actually really good, especially since you don't have to modify your system to use it.
When I was very young, my parents bought a TT Games flash cartridge from someone who put some games on it. I thought it broke when we got a DSi after my DS Lite broke but I eventually realized it was because of protection and bought another DS Lite to use it again a few years ago.

the DS is to the GBA as the wii is to the GCN in the sense that the ds stole alot of games from the GBA the same way that the wii stole alot of games from the GCN and they will always be cursed for that. the wii and ds are both shit consoles. gaming really died after the 6th generation.
i haven't timed it but i can get over 30 hours of battery life in my modded GBA with 2 rechargeable AA batteries. which can easily be replaced if need be with cheap high quality batteries from any store. i don't have a ds and don't care to ever have one but don't they get less than half that battery life? with batteries that can only be replaced with cheap chinese knockoffs ordered off the internet. i can also carry a second set of AAs with me and easily open the battery cover with my finger if 30 hours isn't enough. the GBA might not be able to emulate an SNES or genesis but i can emulate those on my gamecube so no problem. i can say that the GBA should have had 4 face buttons though so the ds is superior in that sense.

there are two types of people in the world, selfish people and compassionate people. selfish people care more about themselves than they care about other people. while compassionate people care more about other people than they care about themselves. if you are selfish and you get something that you want, you get a small dose of dopamine and you feel happy for a short time but it is fleeting. soon you want more to get another dose, because isn't that what animals do? chase good feelings and avoid bad feelings.. it's an endless cycle and you can never feel satisfied. if you follow it to it's logical end and become a monarch or a capitalist, you can still never feel satisfied, you still always want more money and power. however if you are compassionate and dedicate your life to helping others then you can feel satisfied because in the end you have helped so many other people. also you will end up in heaven and eternity is a long time compared to your short moment here on earth so that is a plus.

There was a Portal game back in the day that I had for the DS Lite. It was a sidescroller and a ton of fun!
That game is called simply Portal DS. But there is also a 3D Remake of Portal called like a i believe dlc of the portal. But it is just a Demo bc the Full Project was Never finished. But I could only find the sidescroller portal version.

GBA Back Up Tool is a must have IMO. Its a great way to swap game saves between my carts and RetroArch when i do some retro gaming on my HDTV.
