    Overall this is a decent Chromebook from Asus. It performs exceptionally well for the price point sporting a fanless Core M3 skylake processor. It sports two multifunction USB-C ports that support power, data, or video. It comes with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of EMMC storage (not upgradeable).
    My only gripe at the moment is that it's a little slow to switch between its various 2-in-1 modes. It sometimes takes extra time for the screen to adjust its orientation based on how the user is holding it.

    There's a great article on anandtech on how a lower core m can beat a higher end one, and the principles apply here on that octane test. While the Lenovo has an m5, it's a tablet so heat is a bigger concern for both the chip and users holding the device. Lenovo likely had to be conservative about the chip's heat output while Asus did not due to the different form factor. The article I mentioned was from the original Broadwell Core Ms, but it was Asus and Lenovo in those same form factors. Anyway, great work as always, Lon.

    It is all about the VP9 playback on Chrome. Installing h264ify extension will change the codec to avc. But the issue we are getting now is that since early Dec 2016, you cannot play 4K videos using avc. The 4K option in CZcams video just does not appear.

New model is almost the same, but has 4 GB of Ram and 32GB of internal storage, and it costs, depending on vendors, for only $20-$30 more than the original. Still 10.1". The model # is C100PA-DS03. Hopefully you can get one and give a review. Thanks! Frank

    Hi Lon, I think it's funny that you have mentioned for a long time now that Chrome doesn't run youtube well! Seams odd that google owns Chrome and youtube and won't bother to fix the issue! And lets MS Edge out perform Chrome on PCs on low end machines! Can it really be that hard of a fix?

    • @LonSeidman
      @LonSeidman  Před 7 lety +3

      It's really surprising - especially when CZcams spams Edge users with Chrome ads to get them to switch :). I suspect it has something to do with optimizing playback for Google's VP9 codec.

I heard a rumor that said on Google IO 2017 that they released SD card support but I didn't know if that was true or not and the Google Play Store is still in beta so right now buying a Chromebook for me would be kind of like a premature buying decision because what I have to buy has to last for two years

      Mighty T, I was thinking like you, but pulled the trigger and got the Asus Flip 2. I have been using it for about a week now and love it. Based on what I know of the Samsung Pro the biggest advantage it will have over the Asus is the 3:2 screen ration vs the 16:9 on the Asus. If you plan on using the device in tablet mode often the Samsung Pro maybe best for you.
      That said , the Asus is solid and I anticipate being very happy with it for the next 2-3 years.

      OneManShow I have A Chromebook as a supplement to my workhorse laptop. That way any surfing the Chromebook will take the strain, saves wear and tear on my XPS. The great thing is that if it gets sluggish, which it does after a couple of months, I just powerwash and ten mins later I have a fast fresh machine. Brilliant. My Dell Chromebook is an i5 with FHD matte screen, with 8gb RAM, it flies for browser use. Couldn't live without one now.

    Great video as usual. For $499 price, this is extremely overpriced. Other then the small size and being a 2-in-1, this has absolutely no advantages over a 7th generation low-end laptop in the $300 to $400 price range. it's amazing people are willing to buy this. all of the flaws that you mentioned make this product absolutely a waste of money.

    • @andyH_England
      @andyH_England Před 7 lety +1

      poisonr you miss the point, this is for consumers that are within the Chromebook eco system. It gives many a choice above the low end Chromebooks, faster with better screen, touch, flip, etc. if you are a Windows user most will not be interested, as those that have wanted to ditch Windows (me) already have moved to a Chromebook. You have to remember this is a fairly new market and apart from the Chromebook Pixel we haven't really had a large choice of better spec Chromebooks. They will continue to eat into the Windows sales as tablets did a few years ago. Not saying that Windows will die but now consumers have a choice the mass exodus from Windows shows how their monopoly was the reason for their success, not the product (W8 still makes me sick).

    • @FLOODOFSINS
      @FLOODOFSINS Před 7 lety +1

      Those consumers are idiots when picking a device. I can guarantee you whatever they're using their Chromebook for (which most likely is just surfing the web mainly like CZcams or porn) is no match for the price they can save and the added power and other benefits of a normal Windows laptop. Are you going to impress me because you can flip your Chromebook over? Do these people not already own a tablet? I doubt it. If they are going to put down $500 for this Chromebook then most likely they already have a high-end smartphone and a tablet and probably already a laptop or desktop. Heck you can save $40 and buy a Acer Aspire E5-575G-55KK Laptop: Intel Core i5-7200U 2.5 GHz, 15.6" 1080p LED, 8 GB DDR4, 1 TB HDD, 2 GB GeForce 940MX, Windows 10 for $459.99 right now online
      But oh no it's not a new $499 Chromebook with WAY lower specs that still has dropped frames and a top and bottom bar you can't get rid of as Lon shows in his review video. Gosh, you sold me I really want this Chromebook now hahaha. Even Kodi sucks on this.
      What's sad is Lon bought his Chromebook with his own funds. I know he resells it but still, that sucks. Who the hell wants to be in the Chromebook ecosystem anyways? Most people who use a Chromebook would be just as productive using a $50 tablet. I was hoping you were going to make some good points, but I guess I will have to wait til next year when a better Chromebook comes out. Til then cya

    I think that even for windows we wouldn't see celeron and atom processors because in windows they are worst.

      I'm sick of tech costing like 60% more here, it's a fucking joke.

    Of course the ssd isn't upgradeable. Why should oems give users such a choice? Those assholes. Put in an m.2 drive and call it a day so we can upgrade.

    If you are willing to spend $499 on a Chromebook. Why not go for Windows? Not trying to stir something up. Really just trying to understand. You can get decent Windows Notebooks for 500 bucks.

      alittleolder Deutsch because some people just don't need the Crap that comes with Windows. No malware or bugs and you can reinstall in minutes to get a fresh machine. Billions of mobile tech users and many of them don't need Windows, the success of tablets and the dire sales of Windows shows that consumers have been waiting for an alternative to the buggy virus ridden Windows OS.

      You must not know how to use your computer if you're worried about viruses and malware. I haven't had any problems for years upon years. your reasoning made absolutely no sense. with a ssd you can do a restore in like 10 minstrel if need be.

      alittleolder Deutsch Exactly what I had said. Heck you can save $40 and buy a Acer Aspire E5-575G-55KK Laptop: Intel Core i5-7200U 2.5 GHz, 15.6" 1080p LED, 8 GB DDR4, 1 TB HDD, 2 GB GeForce 940MX, Windows 10 for $459.99 right now at newegg. and these people are trying to talk you into getting this awful Chromebook.

      poisonnr I agree 100%. I stopped using programs where I didn't know where there are from or at least used them in a save Environment but These days I buy the Software I use, Windows, Vegas, Office whatever.. and with some of the free stuff you just Need a tiny amount of Research to see where and if to get those. The only Reason Mac and Chrome doesn't have so many Viruses yet is because the platforms aren't used that much and therefor aren't interesting enough for Virus prorammers to bother with. Now that the Android phone is popular there's plenty of crap on there. Can't even remember when I had the last Virus on my Computer. Just pay like 40 bucks a year for 5 Computers and you are pretty much secure if you don't do really crazy stuff.

    • @alittleolder75
      @alittleolder75 Před 7 lety

      Exactly and you have the use of hundreds of thousand of programs. With chromeos you can surf the web and use a webversion of Office. Cool. And soon some Android apps. That's ok for Schools if they sell them for like $150 but not for a Price where good stuff starts somewhat

    • @mindhead1

      Juha, my 2014 Asus Chromebox i3 is still running strong. I have added 8GB RAM (total of 10GB) and the machine still performs flawlessly. I have it hooked us to a 27" Asus monitor and been using it daily for almost 3 years. I wouldn't be afraid to pick up one of these older machines if you are in the market.
      That said, it's probably about time for a hardware update.
