Time to say a massive thanks to John for swiftly bringing this aeroplane back to life, and here is the back story. The aeroplane was owned by a good friend of mine, John P who I flew with back in the 70's and 80's. There were a small group of us who flew slope, we flew Baildon, Otley Chevin and Meanwood Ridge around the Leeds area as well as flying thermal and power at Cookridge. John's Alpina was always a stunning looking aeroplane and gave him great pleasure. As time progressed, John moved away and eventually stopped flying. We discussed the Alpina and I agreed to look after it, hopefully restore it, or ensure that it found a good custodian for the future. Time progressed and as I subscribed to his channel and eventually chatted to John, he expressed a real interest in the Alpina, but transport was an issue and Covid got in the way. I knew he was THE person to look after it for the future. I fly a PC-12 for a family and they wanted to go to Newquay - I swiftly got back in touch with John W and at short notice, earlier this month, we met at a blustery Newquay airport, carefully extracted the Alpina and another delta I made back in the day. All too brief a meet, but I knew both models were now in good hands. To say that both flew again in only 10 days is quite frankly astonishing and a testament to John's dedication. John P has seen the video and is extremely pleased indeed. Well done John and thank you for bringing the Alpina back to flight !!!!
Fantastic plane , elegant and power . Those Germans know there stuff. Great flight John loved those stall turns across the face of the cliffs , one of my favourite moves with the B4 . See you up there .
Thanks John, you flew a model that I enjoyed in the 80's and still have a complete box of (which I may never build again...). On the slope with alpine dynamics he flew beautifully. Good job
Wonderful, John. The Alpina is still a great and fantastic Glider. It flies so majestetic and powerful. Thx a bunch for that video. To that time, I couldn't afford it. Now, four month ago, I finaly got me a nice used one. I'm very happy with it.
Mr.John kindly allows us,through his hard work,to watch an anthology of RC gliding since the begining of proportional RC.This is frankly super.Sincere congrats and cheers .
Beautiful! I got hold of a Similar Alpina Magic from the 80's a few years ago. It's such a beauty to fly, majestic and graceful. Really enjoyed the video!
Fantastic video John! Especially about the Alpina. A week ago I acquired a 50 year old, untouched Alpina kit that looks like it was made yesterday. I'm really looking forward to building it. The old Alpina is an aesthetic icon of slope and mountain flying.
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL! I wasn't able to afford this gorgeous model back in the 80's, but LOVE that I can watch it fly today! Where do you find these jewels of the sky? Well done, John! 😊🙌
That is a beautiful glider flown perfectly scale. I used to be all about speed and aerobatics but the large scale gliders in beautiful locations is more then just flying RC planes. It's therapeutic to say the least! Enjoy!
Sad to say and forgive me but I have one complaint 🤦♂️ Your videos are too short! 10 to 30 minutes would be so amazing! 🙏🏼 And believe this, I will watch them start to finish and they will go in my playlist "Epic slope soaring and more" all views and credit going to you!
Ah thank you! I normally fly for 15-20 minutes before my wife starts getting bored with the filming. Then I make a video from the best bits trying to get a mixture of different angles etc. Sometimes there is only a few minutes of good footage left, but other times it’s hard to know what to cut out as it’s 20 minutes of good stuff.
MY FRIEND DUANE A. ON MAUI HAS TWO ALPINA'S. WHAT A GRACEFUL SHIP ! AND HAS TO HAVE ONE OF THE BEST LD RATIO OF ANYTHING I'VE SEEN. AWESOME VIDEO AS ALWAYS! MAHALOS!
Very pretty, I always hankered after an Alpina as a youth, but sadly it was never to be. One of my dream models, alongside a Sitar Special, MPX Flamingo and an Ellipse 2V
Yesterday after several years of printing out models, I managed to get a 75% scaled down 3DLabs P51D flying out in the back field in a strong breeze. Up until that point it kept tip stalling into the ground. A few repairs later and some head scratching, we managed to get it aloft. Nice video John and glad to see that bird flying again.
Beautiful video, it is a pleasure to see this plane in flight today and as its name says ALPINA MAGIC it is true because its flight and its plant is really magical, I would like to see more videos of this plane and details of it, this glider marked an era but today its flight is still majestic. Thank you very much for sharing, greetings Jesus.
Multiplex make an updated 4 metre carbon version, the Alpina Carbotec, but you may need to have it made to order. Alternatively Tangent Modelltechnik offer the Graupner version (grp fuselage and foam/veneer wings) in 3, 4 and 5 metre versions. The Alpina is still very much alive and well and of course is the quintessential alpine soarer.
Ok John, all your Sailplanes are flying fantastic (with a good pilot 😉) but honestly, I thing on that spot even a Flying Bathtub would fly fantastically 😊
It does have the original airbakes in the wings but I had only just renovated the model and was keen to fly it as the weather was nice. I hadn’t had chance to get them working again but plan to replace them with servoless ones.
The designer appears to be a certain Hans Glatthorn, according to a post in the German rc-network forum. (I cannot seem to post links here, but if you are interested, search for „Der Vater der Alpina-Familie“.) Like everything on the internet, you might want to take this information with a grain of salt, but I don't have found any reasons to doubt it is authentic and maybe it helps with further research. The post would translate like this: "Several people have asked about the father of the Alpina: humbly, it is me, Hans Glatthorn. The Alpina was the first 4-metre glider from a major manufacturer. It became the greatest success ever achieved by a 4-metre model in all its variants. To date, over 10,000 models have been sold in the different variants, which is 40 kilometres of wingspan. The Graupner company still has family members of this model family in its range today. At that time (approx. 1985) I was head of the model construction department of Multiplex and had set my mind on bringing such a model to the market. The ASW 17 with a wingspan of 4 metres, designed by the Reh brothers and distributed by A. Schaufler, was the benchmark at that time. I often and gladly flew it on the Teck. I readily admit that I was influenced by this success in the construction of the Alpina, as is the case with every designer who is oriented towards the state of the art. But the differences between the ASW 17 and the Alpina are significant. For example, the ASW 17 had the Ritz 3 on it, the Alpina the Ritz 2. There is a world of difference between the two. The ASW 17 was designed more for climbing, the Alpina more for planing. The Alpina hull was an enlargement of our own original Flamingo designed by Gerhard Allgaier. The Alpina was constantly developed further. The Alpina magic was another milestone on the Alpina's road to success. Increasing the range of applications by changing the wingspan was a great thing at the time, and still is today. After I left MPX, the Alpina was given a complete overhaul - it had earned it. The Alpina 4001 received a new profile with flaps. A further increase in the range of uses. I still enjoy flying this model as a glider and electric glider. Alpinas of every generation are represented in our club. It always pleases me to see how the original Alpina can still keep up well with the most modern gliders, proof of the correctness of the concept. The whole history of the Alpina would fill a book, maybe I'll write one someday."

Well done, mate; you've joined the right ends together!
Sounds like an exciting job you've got there. 👍
Great story, nice to see these planes being looked after and flown again. .
That's neat... you made the perfect marriage. 👍
Fantastic!
Great story, nice to see her up again, thanks.
This model retains energy so well it looks like it's hiding an invisible motor. What a beauty ❤
The 80's was a great time for gliders with both the Alpina and Flamingo from Multiplex.
Very smooth and majestic!
Fantastic plane , elegant and power . Those Germans know there stuff. Great flight John loved those stall turns across the face of the cliffs , one of my favourite moves with the B4 . See you up there .
Wow it picks up some real speed turning into the slope.... your very brave
This is inspiring me to setup and fly a glider my dad built in the late 70s
You won't regret it!
Beautiful
One of those models I always wanted as a high school boy and never could afford.
Heck, isn't it great at times to be grown up? 😍
Thanks John, you flew a model that I enjoyed in the 80's and still have a complete box of (which I may never build again...). On the slope with alpine dynamics he flew beautifully. Good job
And beautifully synced to the music.
Truly Beautiful

Thank you so much for this wonderful glider. You made a fantastic job of it!
Congratulations, Sir! Hope you will never give up this beautiful hobby entirely.
Sorry JWH, don't really do twitter, but my walking days over, good to see you younger chaps still flying though.
Pretty big thing, I love how slow and smooth big models look

Loved it when the music lined up with the first loop! Stunning model, great save.
The most beautiful glider at Multiplex company
Smooth and classy, very classy. Proof that size does matter 😂
Nice Job John, you have done that model proud. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

@@SlopeRCGliders That's understandable and I do enjoy the effort and end result as I said to me they are very therapeutic and beautiful.
I like that you are alternating between aerobatic and gentle soaring gliders. 🙂👍🛩
Isn't the Alpina the greatest slope soarer ever made? Stunning footage and such a great model, thank you!
yes, there is something about it. Multiplex has sold over 10.000 pieces of it.
@@freddy7700 10.000? Wow, that is a lot!
@@HighStartAeronautics yes, that's true. I got one myself. 30 years old, and I still love flying it.

Wow, beautiful, especially against the deep blue sea and the cow and calf in the background
What a great video! Such a beautiful plane in such a beautiful setting! Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you.
Love it. Thanks for this sweet video. This glider simply marches on, even when pulling up wind. OC you have to know what you're doing at a cliff.
Milking that lift.....Loved the Soundtrack on this one, so appropriate.....🤔😳😮😀😀😀🇬🇧
NICE John! 👍👍🥶💨😁😎
A truly beautiful aircraft. Also on my bucket list. ❤❤

Excellent pilot skills with amazing footage and music to complement a Beautiful glider, Love it

Graupner model 1960s would be good to see fly again great models.
Hallo John, Du machst sehr schöne Videos, die schaue ich mir sehr gerne an.

NICE. I have a dg808 at 4.5m im working on right now. Thanks for sharing.
Simply beautiful. 👍👍👏👏
Fantastic. Beautiful flyer.
Many thanks!
Wow that's a beauty! But I notice you didn't catch it ...
Not this one!
Beautiful ship…and Mr. Smooth on the sticks 👍 A few more meters and you’ll be joining the boys in Brittany 😉
Getting to watch a scale glider well flown and great videography, no time wasted here. Well done, just well done.
Thank you!
Hi John , Awesome.
Beautiful glider!
TRES BON PLANEUR
Amazing to see that again
What a beautiful plane John, so majestic and scale. Great flying and flight.

Great stuff 😊❤
NICE !!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍
Majestic. Über cool. 🎉😊
Nossa é muito lindo
Lovely!
Fantastic wish I was retired 😂❤
Это очень красиво❤
Ooohhh that's nice!
is it different flying a bigger glider ?
It’s easier really. A bigger plane has more energy and isn’t as affected by the wind gusts etc.
@@SlopeRCGliders many thanks .

majestic. is she light?
I haven’t weighed it but it’s not a particularly light model.
Ritz profile. Needs a lot of load to run perfect. Otherwise it's flying like a bag of nuts.
Is it for sale??😊
Who was the designer at multiplex in this era?if anyone knows it’ll be you John 😂
Sorry, I don’t know that one.
