I got a used Gooney Bird wing off a friend and then built a new fuselage using a set of original plans. This was my maiden flight of the model. It's quite a difficult glider to fly with some unusual handling. This was a bit tricky to fly as it needed way more control authority and the wind was quite gusty.

I bought this foam Parkzone Extra as a broken airframe without a motor. With a few simple repairs and a foam nose added, it was ready for the slope!

Hi John, from New Zealand slope soaring lots of fun have done some here with a Olly 2 (Olympic two) airtronics kit and a ..."Turkey ".... (plan RCM u.s.) with a sounds like...( jigelskie wing) all balsa a good flyer.

A school friend of mine built one back in the ‘50s - I can’t recall if I gave it him as a birthday or Christmas present or whether he bought it. We were very much into building flying models - free-flight gliders, free-flight diesel powered, control line, Jetex 50, and chuck gliders. I even built a near-scale model of the first hovercraft, the Saunders Roe SRN 1 whose lift came from an ED Racer 2.5 cc diesel. The Chief was covered in doped tissue as was the norm in those days, the only alternative being doped silk which was very strong but heavy. The Chief’s tissue was mostly clear with black trim. We found the box that the wings plugged into to be too weak so reinforced it with thin plywood which prevented it from splitting open. I was lucky to live next to open fields so we flew it from a mixture of hand launches and bungee launches and we had a small trim tab on the fin which we set so it flew in large circles to it didn’t fly away. I still recall my friend running alongside it and catching it as it was coming in to land. It’s slow graceful flight left a deep impression on me which I’ve never forgotten, and I’ve often thought about it over the years and regretted the eventual demise of Keil Kraft. I recently came across a plan of the Chief for sale on eBay which set me contemplating.

@@direktorpresident Many thanks for your link. Didn’t know about this. I’ll download and see what happens. The RC version is especially interesting in this era of miniature low weight RC equipment and batteries. Reading the model description reminded me of the built-in feature to keep the model flying straight while on the towline but then allowed circling flight once released. I’d forgotten all about this over the years so my description of the trim tab in my post was incorrect. Thank you for helping to correct my memory.
@@ianmathieson65 No worries! It's usually referred to as an "auto rudder", and many were the weird and wonderful schemes dreamed up..offset towhooks, sliding towhooks, burning fuses etc...but now with precision featherweight radio we can do all of it from the ground. Even the Mercury Marauder had a built-in "weight box" at the CG to bring the airframe up to minimum competition weight, so modern radio systems with lipo batteries will probably not even equal the contemporary payload. Good luck on your imminent return to a grand hobby!

People used to fly these f/f back in the day, I've seen one go OOS off a tolerably short bungee with no slope much to speak of. This is beautiful John. I like the way it has that useful flat yaw whilst it waits to turn. Yellow film also is a favourite finish, the light shows through brilliantly in certain conditions. Looking forward to seeing more of this Kiel Kraft Chief - the RC certainly shows what can be done! Nice one John. 🌟👍

Superb! It has a surprisingly good turn of speed in that breeze; did you build the wing to the original thickness, or has the aerofoil been changed and slimmed down a few percent? It looks a lot faster than the (free-flight) one my dad helped me build when I was a little girl. I remember thinking that it was the biggest plane in the world - I was tiny and that wingspan was HUGE... My Chief was covered in doped tissue and came out very light; it was a real floater; has the RC conversion increased the wing-loading to any significant degree? It flies beautifully. Perhaps I should have experimented with ballast - but I didn't know anything about such things back then, and radio control gear was an impossible dream. A 2-channel set cost (literally) as much as a decent second-hand car. Whatever. It's a lovely model.🙂
Thank you. It’s all built as per the original plans, apart from the rudder which I enlarged slightly. I haven’t weighed the finished glider but all the radio gear does add a bit of extra weight. Modern servos are pretty light but the control pushrods etc all add extra weight at the tail, which then needs to be balanced out with three times the equivalent weight in the nose. The modern film covering looks great but is significantly heavier than doped tissue. I was thinking of enlarging the plans by 50% and building another. The extra size would make it a real floater.
The KK Chief was so popular! I had mine 60 yrs ago too, I eventually passed it on to my nephew, who managed to shred it through a fence. He became a pilot in the RAF, retiring some years ago as an instructor. I moved on to RC, often thought about a conversion like this but didn’t get around to it - great stuff!

wow my friend had one in the 60s, it was the king of gliders, the best!,his dad built it, took forever, but to scared to fly it, even to scared to free fly it on a gentle launch lol, great to finally see one in the air ,wonderful memories!

Brings back memories from about 50 years ago. I built a Chief and a friend built a single channel press button RC to put in it. We maidened it on a beautiful hot summers day and by sheer luck hooked a boomer of a thermal. Unfortunately the Chief got carried away and we never saw it again.😒

How did you do such a beautiful color shadowing?
I sprayed the balsa airframe using different colour ‘rattle cans’ (just a light dusting trying not to add too much weight) Then covered it with Hobbyking clear covering.

Not sure whether I've ever seen a more beautiful glider than this one. Wings and tail are exceptional. I'd love to build one but my last glider was 37 years ago.

The original Radio Queen was the first model aeroplane to fly across the English Channel between England and France powered by a 3.5cc diesel engine. I used to have one which I used for training beginners. I wish I'd never sold it now.
