- Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights is a beautiful metroidvania in a dark fantasy setting. It's at once quite difficult but not overly punishing. Ender Lilies is available now on pretty much every console/system.

The slam-into-the-ground dodge is directly lifted from Castlevania Rondo of Blood, where Maria does it. She also uses spirits to fight, such as birds and other animals. She doesn’t fight directly. So yeah, that was probably the main inspiration for the protagonist’s control mechanics

The "dodge" looks more like a "face plant" (think Willie Mays Hayes sliding in the movie Major League) This visually is curiously as warm as it is dark and haunting.

Such a great review, I think you've sold me on this one! As always I love how much detail you go into on the various elements that lead into the experience! Your comments about the scrabbly dodge roll were interesting, I'm curious to see if I feel the same way when I play the game myself!

Hollow knights dash was so quick and responsive, a similar game seems a bit off when it’s not the same.
Any 2D game where you can’t move your avatar in the air makes it really difficult. Enders lilies isn’t like that it was just an example.

But NEIR’s soundtrack is just one of the best ever made.

Great review! I agree on all points, especially with the stupid beginning dash; it always made her look like a zombie that was lunging towards prey to eat their brains. I started playing it a few weeks ago, but put it down recently after Nier Automata finally released a PC patch making the damn thing playable. I'll get back to Ender Lilies in a bit, but it's fun so far.

Great review Pam! This game reminds me a lot of Bloodstained Ritual of the Night. I'll look into it for sure
I never thought a Metroidvania would beat out Hollow Knight for me but this one blew me away. It had a unique feel with the spirits but many of the Metroidvania mainstays I love. And the music….. is incredible. I was listening to the OST a month after I finished the game. Polished to perfection. Doesn’t get much better than this.

Your review highlighted the good parts about the game with some of the rougher parts. I've been hearing some complaints it's too short but outside if that not much else. Great Review!
Thank you! I didn’t think it was too short at all. I can’t say exactly how long it took me since it have a tendency to just open the map and walk away for long periods of time, but it was probably around 20-25 hours to finish and get most of the secrets.

25 hours is just about right.
I’ve gotten pretty bad with the judging on length recently, if it’s not a 60+ hour game it puts me off.
I replayed Mass Effect Andromeda recently, I just did the main missions. It only took me about 15 hours. The first time was about 80. It was much more enjoyable this time. A prime example of more isn’t always better.

Sweet.. a review of a game I’m interested in, while I drink my morning coffee. Hoping for a physical of this because the art is so dark and pretty.
I'd bet that some limited printing company would do a physical at some point.

Her lil scramble dodge makes sense because she doesn't look combat efficient which in turn makes her learned dash after she gains strength an extra layer to character progression and growth imo.
I'm playing Vigilant atm, but this is definitely on my radar.
I’ll take satisfying dodges over realistic ones any day.

A map that shows you which areas you've found everything in/finished and which areas you have not is a thing every 'metroidvania' needs to have.

Finished it. Definite classic though I had to mute the music and play something else on the background instead... I'm going to give a big fat 9/10. One of the best games i played recently. I was sad to see the experience come to an end. That's how good it was for me.

I am probably going to try this. It has a visual look reminiscent of Ori and the Wii of the Wisps, a game I expected not to like but did. Another top notch review too.

Finally got around to this gsme and I love it so fsr. So glad there isn't a corpse run. Love the soulslike genre but sometimes I just don't have the patience.

Game is great. Really interesting mechanics and world building. The only thing I wish it did was mark things on the map once you see them. Hard to remember what is where, and there's a lot of backtracking in this game.
For f***ing real. Never been captivated by a game like Ender Lilies, ever.

I like the way the little light drop strains when it shines.
It sort of strains and tries really hard to shine, it was a nice touch.
The rhyming of the story took me out a bit.
