    • @EDHRECast
      @EDHRECast  Před 3 lety +5

      Thank you! Happy to help clarify, too: a goaded creature must attack a player other than you if able. Planeswalkers are an important distinction there, it's true, but goad says they must attack another player, not that they can't attack you. It forces combat in another direction, rather than just preventing it in your direction. Since they MUST attack a player who isn't you, they wouldn't be able to attack Windgrace, since he isn't a player who isn't you.

I had both Sunhome fortress and Kessig wolf run in my Gishath deck but had to take out the Wolf run after it's poor performance in the deck. The fortress was so much better and I didn't need both. I don't think blood moon and ashaya work the way you think they do. Without any other effects, blood moon will immediately destroy Ashaya by taking away the ability that sets its power and toughness, and so blood moon is just a blood moon that kills one of your creatures. If you have a way to keep Ashaya around, blood moon will remove any abilities your creatures have other than tapping for red (including tapping for green). So she's not an out to blood moon; in fact they heavily anti-synergize.

    It's so refreshing to see the EDHREC take on Trove Warden and Geode Rager vs how Command Zone has been talking about them. I don't like Warden and can't think of a single deck I would want it in. Geode Rager, however looks fun, and I look forward to running it in my Marisi deck.

    • @Mwarrior1991
      @Mwarrior1991 Před 3 lety

      I think the problem with geode rager is you need to drop him on turn 5/6, wait a whole round to untap with him and then play a land (if you have one that late). Hes a creature (with only 3 toughness) and that makes him pretty vulnerable. They compared him to a sorcery for 4 mana that goads all creatures you dont control. That sorcery just happens, you get your goad off with a lot less risk of opponent interaction.

    • @Mwarrior1991

      On the flip side, I feel like trove warden could go in most white decks. Its a lot like feather in that it gives you passive card advantage, reloading your board when it dies. its unfortunate that the trigger is a dies trigger, but this is a big step in the right direction for white. I think dropping this on turn 4 will feel good most of the time, even if you only get back a couple cards.

    Looking forward to experimenting with a Phylath brew, flickering it with COnjurer's Closet, bouncing it with Temur Sabertooth, and the casting Overhwelming Stampede on my one big ass Plant token to go from 0 to 100 in a hurry. Another thought I had is that Obuun presents a cute opportunity to animate all of your lands and then combine that with wraths like Hour of Revelation, Planar Cleansing, and the new Ondu Inversion. Your animated lands dodge these completely and if you have Ashaya in play those wrath effects are now largely one-sided.
    Is that enough to make these decks more powerful than other lands decks I have/have built in the past? Probably not, but I enjoy thought experiments and trying new things just for the sake of trying them, rather than resigning myself to "But X is strictly better, play X"

    I'm building aesi as my 3rd landfall deck and since the commander itself has a play an extra land I feel I might not have the mana flood problem.

  • @kylesavage4525
    @kylesavage4525 Před 3 lety

    I completely agree with Dana on the goad creature. Six mana is way too much. Disrupt Decorum is a one time thing but it is 4 mana to goad all creatures while for Geode Rager to do this u need 3 landfalls after u cast it. And if u choose to cast it and wait a turn u risk a lot if it gets removed. Plus goad is not as good if ur opponents' creatures do not pose much of threat as attackers.
    Nahiri's Lithoforming + Abundance is amazing cause it reduces the randomness of the effect a lot. If u rly need landfall triggers u can choose to draw only lands and in that way u don't even miss out on mana. f u want spells u basically trade as many lands u want for spells. Incredible flexibility. Now add Trove Warden to the mix to exile all the lands u sacced and then sac him to get themm all back. Yes yes i know 3 card combo plus the sac outlet but a man can dream. Besides u can do it w/o Abundance.
    Sunhome is not as strong as people think but it is still a land so it does not take up a spell slot. And if u are playing Boros u can definitely afford a few colorless producing lands.

    Matt demonstrates that reading the card doesn't always explain the card. Sometimes our brains fill in what we want it to read. • @ReLeaseHaVoc

    Great episode! Landfall is such a fun mechanic.
    Question: Does Stone-Seeder Hierophant allow lands put into play tapped to be untapped if the lands enter at the same time? For instance, Scapeshift/Splendid Reclamation put multiple lands into play tapped at the same time. Does the Hierophant get to untap each of those or is it only triggered once?
    I like that you gave a lot of attention to Nahiri's Lithoforming and Valakut Exploration. I really like the idea of the two of them together. It's basically doubling the draw and if you're running Ramunap Excavator or Crucible of Worlds you're likely to find them and guarantee getting your lands back (untapped with Stone-Seeder Hierophant). They also have pretty awesome synergy with Splendid Reclamation.
    I am also considering Valakut Exploration in my Mairsil deck with Pendant of Prosperity and Patron of the Moon being in there too. I really like the idea of putting cards into the graveyard quickly and/or consistently. Being able to use your blink/draw spells before they're put into the graveyard is pretty sweet too.
    EDIT: Dang. I think Ashaya slots pretty well into my Emmara deck too. I hadn't considered the tapping potential of it.

    • @Ent229
      @Ent229 Před 3 lety +1

      The land enters the battlefield before Hierophant's triggered ability is put on the stack. So the triggering land is a valid target.
      Also you can tap it between each of its triggers, so if you got 2 Forests and a Swamp, you could untap the Swamp 3 times for BBB.

      @ReLeaseHaVoc Před 3 lety +1

      @@Ent229 Ah great thanks. So in your example you could get any combination of 3 green or black mana?

    • @Ent229
      @Ent229 Před 3 lety +1

      @@ReLeaseHaVoc Yes, in my example you could get any combination of 3 green or black mana. OR untap one of your existing lands 3 times (say an Island).
      Hierophant, Lotus Cobra, and Amulet of Vigor play similar roles. However Amulet of Vigor does require the land to enter tapped. So if you play a Forest it triggers the Hierophant and Cobra but not the Amulet. So in some ways it is better than Amulet of Vigor for Landfall decks. On the other hand a 1/1 creature will die quicker than an artifact and summoning sickness effects Hierophant.

    • @ReLeaseHaVoc
      @ReLeaseHaVoc Před 3 lety +1

      @Ent229 Thanks! I have been wondering about that kind of timing with a few things recently so you've helped me more than you know!
      Your assessment of its weaknesses is very fair but given you're in red if you're using Nahiri's Lithoforming, Haste is a strong possibility. It's also less mana efficient and more removable (like you said). Still, the effect is so good for the budget. It also turns bounce lands into ramp which is pretty cool.
      It seems quite good in Yarok or with the new Ancient Greenwarden too. I'm really excited to try this card. Not that I have Yarok or the Greenwarden but it seems like a a useful card even if you don't have the synergy to hand. Which is not always true of Amulet of Vigor.

    • @Ent229
      @Ent229 Před 3 lety +1

      @@ReLeaseHaVoc Indeed the Hierophant looks good enough to include. Depending on the deck, either the Hierophant or the Amulet will be weaker, but they are like Lotus Cobras #2 and #3. Which raises the question, do you run 1, 2, or all 3. That ultimately depends on available deck slots (and budget with regards to Amulet)

    I run 45 lands in my Tatyova deck. Am I a madman? I find that this makes it quite easy to combo off, since I run redundant copies of various Llanowar Scout. I just wish it wasn't a nightmare to tutor up Retreat to Coralhelm in Simic... Long-Term Plans and Drift of Phantasms are some of my best ways to find it, so I'm pretty reliant on just drawing a ton of cards.
    Lol, I actually play Stone-Seeder in Tatyova, because she can help me go infinite sometimes. It's not the best card in the deck, but it's good value. IIRC, she can combo off without Retreat, which is unusual for the deck.
    Do people run Generous Patron in Obuun? You might not always want to give out buffs to enemies, but cards are nice in Naya, and very often a few +1s won't amount to anything, or can be put on creatures that won't benefit from them.

    Could someone recommend me a landsmatter deck they enjoy which doesn't requiere fetchlands? I am not to concerned with the powerlevel buy I would prefer a noncombo finisher.

      There are some decent budget fetchlands now.
      Myriad Landscape & Krosen Verge are 3 mana Rampant Growths in your land slot.
      Technically Blighted Woodlands is a 5 mana version but I don't like it.
      Terramorphic Expanse and Evolving Wilds are just tapped fetchlands.
      The Mirage Slow Fetch Lands are reverse of Evolving Wilds. They start tapped and fetch an untapped land.
      Fabled Passage is being reprinted enough to possibly be budget.
      Also there are a decent number of Green Landfall wincons. Not as many as I would like, but
      Avenger of Zendikar
      Scute Swarm
      Field of the Dead
      Rampaging Baloths
      Zendikar's Roil
      Baloth Woodcrasher
      Oran-Rief Hydra

      Probably if you want to stay budget, restricting to one or two colours is best. I do agree with the budget fetchlands, they are just nice. I would look to have a commander that is the landfall payoff, such as the red green omnath. Or the new red green guy, since payoffs tend to get expensive while the land ramp cards are quite cheap, it is better for the budget if you just need the deck full of setup cards instead of pay off. Also; I think new Radha could be fun as she is sort of a payoff as soon as you give her trample but she also has a bit of setup in he, but that depends if you like the idea of Voltron style decks I guess

    Does Dana have an Arahbo deck? The amount of playable cats is actually very high. I don't find myself with any shortage of good cats to put in my deck. In fact, I have the opposite problem- I see other cats and wonder that if I try to fit that into my Arahbo deck what I would take out.

    Let me challenge the stats on new rouge commander, Anowon with a whole category of cards:
    Cheap equipments that give first(double) strike. (Virdian Claw, Sharpened Pitchfork, Chariot of Victory and specially for Dana: Phyrexian Splicer)
    Dealing dmg in first strike step triggers Anowon abilty separetly from creatures dealing dmg normally
    We mill the same amount of cards but have an additional chance to draw another card.
    And with the amount of low cmc creatures we'll almost always have sb to attach it to.
    Also it will be easier to rebuild our hand/position after boardwipe.
    On topic of cards not seen in Anowon:
    Konda's Banner ( which is basically +2/+2 for all our creatures as long as we have Anowon or other legend on the batllefield, but it's around 10$)
    Drana, Liberator of Malakir for that +1/+1 counters goodness

    Omnath is a card where me and my playgroup don't really see the appeal.
    For casual Tables it could be to weak on a budget or just a free 4/4 that draws you a card if you get to trigger his second ability like once or twice. Mainly used for colors, but then you are using the card more as a filler.
    Once you start going into the more regular tables, Khans fetches, crucible, the Snakeboi from Amonkhet. You start being oppressive at points, generating maybe 2 landfall triggers on your turns in fetchlands, on someone elses turn getting the mana again and he becomes this mana engine that may just outclass the board, especially when his third ability gives you reach to kill someone + the free draw is just gravy. But then you risk to quickly turn any game into archenemy, all the free value doesn't allow you to go under the radar because the obvious thing is you are constantly hitting people with 3 Landfalls for example.
    And once you get into "cEDH-type" infinite combos with like Food Chain or Dualcaster lines he is outclassed again. Food Chain is highly contested, Ukima is pretty budget friendly for a cEDH Deck, Korvold has a great plan B, First Sliver has access to 5 colors, not having black just really hurts for that. And yes, Temur Omnath is a controlversion of Food Chain, but he takes little to no commitment deckbuilding wise, whereas in testing only triggering with Lanfdall can be a huge problem, adding a color for less consistency is only a minor upgrade if even that. At least Enchantment Tutors are now a thing for the list? But even then, Flicker lines requires adding multiple cards to get them reliably, the only real win imo here is that you can play Emiel in here and Emiel really is just great. So yes, he could be in cEDH but I wouldn't call it making an "impact" like a Kenrith or Kinaan. The Deck won't also be "budget friendly" like Pako or Ukima.
    But the key thing is... he is just kind of boring. He is just an amalgam of things that are already a thing.
    edit: My pick for cEDH is gonna be Ashaya, it's both fast and very resilient, plus it scales well into a late game scenario, the trade-off is being mono-colored, but I think this adds more to the format then Omnath.

  • @jacobjensen7704
    @jacobjensen7704 Před 3 lety

    Concerning the challenge the stats presented on Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion,
    First off, the first claim was that Boros can't ramp. This claim has no substance to it. Any non-green color combination is rather even when it comes to ramp. Claiming Boros can't do it is simply repeating a false stereotype without critically thinking about whether it is true or not.
    Secondly, in a two color deck having a handful of lands that tap for colorless and provide utility does not have a serious opportunity cost. Once you get to three color decks or if you have a general that comes down early and requires some more intense color costs (Feather) then the concern is valid. In a Boros deck though, it's not a problem at all. Having played Sunhome for years now, the land becomes a powerful card late game when you need to finish off someone's life total.

    Geode Rager -- definitely not a card for a landfall deck. If you consider that by the time you get 6 mana you may be 1 v. 1, the goad will do almost nothing.
